A factory reset on an LG Smart TV—called Reset to Initial settings—returns the set to its initial settings. A full reset removes installed apps, account information, saved data, and personal settings. The TV then restarts at initial setup, where you may need to reconnect it, configure channels, reinstall apps, and sign in again. The exact effects depend on the model, webOS version, and reset option shown on the TV.
What a reset changes
LG describes a reset as restoring the product to its initial settings at the time of purchase. It is not the same as simply restarting the TV: a full reset clears local setup and app state, and returns the TV to its initial setup screen.
- Apps and accounts: Installed apps and account information are removed. After setup, reinstall the apps you use and sign in again.
- Personal settings and saved data: These are removed by a full reset. Examples LG Spain lists include tuned channels, recording schedules, custom input names, saved Wi-Fi passwords, and the default LG Store user. Which items apply can vary by model and configuration.
- Network settings: Some newer models offer a choice to reset everything except network settings. LG describes this option for certain TVs released in 2024 or later; check the choices on your own set rather than assuming it is available.

When resetting may help—and when it may not
LG lists a malfunctioning Magic Remote, TV software errors, freezing, slow menu navigation, and apps that fail to open or close unexpectedly as problems for which a reset may help. That is troubleshooting guidance, not a promise that resetting will fix the cause. If the same fault remains afterward, contact LG support or arrange service; a fee may apply when the TV is outside warranty.

A reset erases local setup, so it is a reasonable step only if you are prepared to configure the TV and apps again. If the TV is usable, first consider less disruptive troubleshooting for the specific problem.
Find the reset menu for your LG TV
Menu paths differ by generation and webOS version. These routes come from LG’s U.S. support guidance; menu wording may vary by model. If your set’s menus differ, use the model-specific instructions or the route displayed on the TV.

LG’s current reset instructions include a System route for webOS 26 and the General → System route for webOS 6 and later generations covered by that guidance. Its separate 2025 guide groups sets released from 2021 through 2025 under General → System. The TV’s model-specific menu takes precedence if these broad guides do not match your set. - Make sure you know the login details for streaming and other apps you will need to set up again.
- If keeping Wi-Fi details matters, check whether the reset screen offers an option to preserve network settings. That choice is model-dependent.
- If TV Lock is enabled, you will need its password. If you changed it and forgot it, LG advises contacting Customer Support. Do not assume a universal default password; consult the owner’s manual or LG support.
- Keep the TV powered on throughout the process. LG warns: “Do not unplug the power cord or turn off the TV during the reset.”
What happens during setup afterward
Once the reset completes, the TV restarts at the initial screen. Follow the prompts to choose language and locale, connect to the internet, select a usage mode, configure the broadcast signal and channels if applicable, and review notices and terms. When setup is complete, reinstall the apps you want and sign in to them. LG’s initialization walkthrough describes the setup sequence, and its app installation instructions cover reinstalling apps.

If the TV asks for a password or still has a fault
If the reset is blocked by TV Lock, use the password set for the TV. For a changed, forgotten password, LG directs owners to Customer Support rather than providing a universal recovery password. If the TV still freezes, shows errors, or has app problems after the reset and setup, the reset has not necessarily addressed the underlying fault; use LG support or request technician service.
