For movies, start with Filmmaker Mode or Cinema, then adjust brightness for your room. For games, connect the console or PC over HDMI and activate Game Optimizer; use HGiG or VRR only when your TV and connected device support them. There is no single set of numbers that is best for every LG OLED: room light, screen reflections, content and model all affect the result.

Start with a picture mode, not a list of numbers

A picture mode is the most useful first decision because it sets a group of image controls at once. For films, LG’s support guidance points to Filmmaker Mode or Cinema as movie-oriented starting points. For games, Game Optimizer is the entry point to gaming options. Those choices do not constitute a calibration: the same mode and numbers can look different in a bright living room than in a dark one, and settings and features vary by TV model.

LG USA Support’s picture-settings guide, dated September 3, 2026, explicitly cautions that its examples are affected by room lighting, screen reflectance, settings and content. Treat its values as a reference to understand LG’s room-based examples—not as measured results, a universal OLED recipe or proof that a setting is ideal for your TV.

It helps to separate three decisions that are often collapsed into one. First, choose a mode that fits what you are watching: a film mode for movies or Game Optimizer for games. Second, adjust the picture for the room and your preference. Third, check whether your model and connected source support any optional feature you want to use. A change in one category does not guarantee that another setting is available or appropriate.

There is also a difference between a convenient starting point and calibration. A starting point gets you away from arbitrary tweaking and into a mode intended for the activity. Calibration is a more tailored process; LG’s general table is not a custom calibration for your panel, room or viewing distance. If you want a more specific result than a starting point, the guidance here does not establish particular measured values for your individual TV.

Movie settings: choose Filmmaker Mode or Cinema

When to start with Filmmaker Mode

Choose Filmmaker Mode when it is available and you want a movie-focused starting point. LG says Filmmaker Mode Auto Start can switch the picture mode automatically when supported movie content is accessed. LG USA Support gives this instruction: “To auto start Filmmaker Mode set to on and the picture mode will automatically be changed to filmmaker mode.” The exact menu route and the content that triggers the behavior can depend on the TV and its software, so check the manual for your model if you cannot find the option.

Auto Start is useful if you do not want to select Filmmaker Mode manually each time you watch supported movie content. It should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every program or streaming app will trigger a switch. If the picture does not change, first confirm that the source content is supported and that your model offers the feature. You can also select an available movie mode yourself when the automatic option is not present or does not apply to what you are watching.

LG’s 2025 OLED evo announcement describes Filmmaker Mode with Ambient Light Compensation on its latest OLED evo TVs. That is a model-specific capability, not a feature to assume on every LG OLED. Check your exact model’s specifications and manual before looking for it.

When Cinema is the better starting point

Cinema is another movie mode in LG’s general settings guidance. It also appears as the dark-room example in LG’s table below. If Filmmaker Mode is not available, or you prefer the Cinema mode’s presentation, use it as a starting point and judge the image in the room where you watch. Do not assume that a mode name or a table entry guarantees identical behavior across model years.

Filmmaker Mode and Cinema are useful options to compare, not a contest with one universal winner. Which one suits you depends on what is available on your set and how the image looks with your content and room lighting. Try each with the same film and similar scenes; switching between different titles makes it harder to tell whether a difference comes from the mode or the content itself.

LG’s published room examples

The following figures are from LG USA Support’s general picture-settings table dated September 3, 2026. The mode labels correspond to its Natural Light (Vivid), Artificial Light (Standard) and Dark Room (Cinema) examples. LG publishes them as general guidance; they are not independent measurements or a customized calibration for a particular set.

LG lighting example Natural Light (Vivid) Artificial Light (Standard) Dark Room (Cinema)
Backlight/OLED Light 100 80 80
Contrast 100 85 85
Brightness 50 50 50
Sharpness 30 25 10
Color 70 50 50
Tint 0 0 0
Color temperature C50 C20 0

These values are useful for seeing how LG’s examples differ by lighting condition: for example, its Natural Light example lists higher OLED Light, Contrast and Color values than the Dark Room example, while Brightness and Tint remain the same in all three columns. They are not a reason to force Vivid, Standard or Cinema onto your TV regardless of preference. If the image seems too bright, too dim, too sharp or oversaturated, use the table only as a point of comparison and adjust for your viewing conditions.

Read the columns as combinations LG associates with different lighting situations, not as a ladder from bad to good. Natural Light is paired with Vivid, Artificial Light with Standard, and Dark Room with Cinema in the table. For instance, the OLED Light examples are 100, 80 and 80, while sharpness examples are 30, 25 and 10. The numbers do not establish that every viewer in a bright room should use Vivid, or that all dark-room viewing requires the same Cinema values. The guide itself emphasizes factors beyond the room label, including screen reflectance, settings and the content on screen.

Some labels can also vary across model menus. The table calls the control “Backlight/OLED Light,” but your TV may use a different label or offer a different range. A mismatch is not a reason to search for a forced one-to-one substitute: use the manual for your model and treat the listed values as examples from LG’s guide, not required targets.

Adjust brightness for your room

Room brightness and reflections affect perceived picture brightness. If daytime viewing makes the picture hard to see, a brighter setting or a more suitable mode may be more comfortable. In a dark room, a lower light output may be preferable. Those are practical viewing choices rather than a claim that one numeric OLED Light value fits every model: LG’s own guide says room conditions, screen reflectance, settings and content change the appearance.

Make changes while viewing the kind of content you actually watch and in the lighting you normally use. Change one control at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped. If a number in LG’s table is missing, named differently or unavailable on your TV, do not force an equivalent value; use the model-specific manual because menus and controls vary.

A simple comparison routine can make those adjustments more useful. Pick a scene you know well, note the current mode and settings, and make one change before judging the picture again. Keep the room lighting similar during the comparison. If you are switching between daytime and evening viewing, remember that the room itself has changed too; a picture that looks comfortable under one condition may not feel the same in the other.

Keep the distinction between the table’s example values and your own preference in view. LG’s examples have Brightness at 50 and Tint at 0 across all three lighting columns, while other listed values change. That consistency is a feature of the published table, not evidence that those settings must be identical or untouched on every model. If you prefer the picture after a careful adjustment, the broad example is not a reason to undo it.

Gaming settings: activate Game Optimizer first

Game Optimizer is LG’s entry point for gaming settings. Some options may not appear or may be unavailable until the relevant game mode is active. LG support instructions cover webOS-era-specific menu paths, so an exact sequence on one television should not be assumed to apply to another generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the device. Connect the console or PC to the TV over HDMI, then select the HDMI input being used for the game.
  2. Open the gaming controls. Use the TV’s settings to activate Game Optimizer or Game Optimization Mode. The displayed name and menu route can differ by webOS generation and model; consult the manual for your exact TV if the option is not where expected.
  3. Confirm the mode is active. Reopen the gaming settings and check which options are now available. An option that remains absent may be unsupported by that TV or connected device, or may require a different setup.
  4. Set HDR options only if the whole setup supports them. For an HDR game, compare HGiG and Tone Mapping ON if both are available, then use the game’s own HDR calibration when offered.
  5. Enable VRR or G-Sync only on a compatible setup. Check TV and graphics-card compatibility first, then use Game Optimizer to enable the relevant option if supported.

LG’s Game Optimizer instructions are dated July 12, 2026. Its guidance warns that settings availability can depend on the active mode and device setup; use the steps above as a route to the relevant control, not as a promise that every LG OLED shows the same menu.

Follow the sequence in order if a gaming toggle is missing. Selecting the correct HDMI input connects the TV’s settings to the source you are actually using; activating Game Optimizer then exposes the relevant gaming controls where supported. If you switch to another input later, check the settings again rather than assuming that an option enabled for one source or setup will be available in exactly the same way everywhere.

Game Optimizer is the place to begin, not a guarantee that every gaming feature is supported. The TV model, source device, graphics hardware and connection can all matter for options such as VRR or HGiG. If the control is absent after you have selected the game input and activated the mode, use the model manual and device specifications to confirm support before treating the missing toggle as a fault.

HGiG or Tone Mapping ON for HDR games?

HGiG is a supported option intended to align tone and color handling with the game creator’s intent. LG cautions that HGiG may look darker than Tone Mapping ON. That difference does not by itself mean the TV or game is malfunctioning: the options can produce different-looking results, and the preferable choice depends on the supported TV, console or PC, game and the viewer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use HGiG only when it is available for the connected setup. Compare it with Tone Mapping ON using the same HDR game and similar scenes rather than comparing different content. If the game provides an HDR setup or calibration screen, follow it after selecting the TV’s tone-mapping option; do not assume that an option is universally best simply because it is designed around creator intent. LG’s HGiG support article is dated July 17, 2026.

In practical terms, start by confirming that the game is running in HDR and that the option is available on your TV in its gaming settings. Then choose one option, use the game’s HDR adjustment screen if it has one, and compare the same scenes with the other supported option. A darker appearance with HGiG is consistent with LG’s warning; it is not enough on its own to show that a setting is wrong. You may prefer Tone Mapping ON, or you may prefer the HGiG result after using the game’s calibration controls.

Keep the game and TV options in context. The guidance does not say that HGiG is supported by every title, console, PC or LG OLED, nor does it establish one preferred brightness value for HDR games. Check the TV and source documentation, and use the game’s own calibration where available. If either option is missing, confirm compatibility and mode requirements rather than looking for an unrelated setting with a similar name.

VRR and G-Sync: verify compatibility before changing settings

Variable refresh rate (VRR) and G-Sync are conditional features, not settings guaranteed on every LG OLED. LG says compatibility depends on the TV model and graphics card, and its instructions show enabling the feature through Game Optimizer on supported TVs. The TV, connected device and the particular connection must all be suitable for the feature to work.

  • Check the exact TV model and size against its specifications or manual.
  • Check whether the console or PC graphics hardware supports the intended feature.
  • Use the HDMI input and connection required by the device and TV documentation.
  • If the toggle is missing or unavailable, confirm Game Optimizer is active and recheck compatibility rather than assuming a fault.

LG’s VRR and G-Sync guidance is dated August 14, 2025. The G4/G5 specification sheet from LG Electronics also lists features by model and size, illustrating why support for one OLED in a series cannot safely be generalized to every size or generation.

VRR and G-Sync should not be treated as interchangeable promises that appear on every television. The useful first question is whether your specific TV and connected graphics hardware support the feature you want. Next, confirm that you are using the connection and input described in their documentation and have Game Optimizer active. Only then does enabling the corresponding toggle make sense.

If you use a console rather than a PC, do not rely on a graphics-card compatibility statement to answer every question about your setup. Check the console’s capabilities alongside the TV manual. For a PC, check the graphics card as well as the television. The supported configuration can vary by model, device and connection, so the presence of a control on one LG OLED does not prove that another set or source can use it.

Why a setting may be missing or look different

LG’s support instructions span different webOS generations, and the company warns that menu content and feature availability can vary. A setting may be absent because the model does not support it, the connected device or graphics card is incompatible, or the required game mode is not active. An unfamiliar label may also reflect a different model-year menu rather than a different feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Cannot find Filmmaker Mode or Auto Start: Check the model’s picture settings and manual. Auto Start applies to supported movie content and Filmmaker Mode availability is not universal.
  • Game options are unavailable: Select the HDMI input used by the console or PC and activate Game Optimizer/Game Optimization Mode before checking again.
  • HGiG is missing: Verify that the TV, input, game mode and connected source support the option. Do not substitute an unrelated control just because its name sounds similar.
  • VRR or G-Sync does not appear: Verify TV-model and graphics-card compatibility, along with the connection and active game mode.
  • The table numbers do not match your menus: LG’s figures are broad examples. Check the model manual for its available controls and names instead of treating the table as a required preset.

Before changing a control you cannot locate, confirm the complete model number, including size and model-year identifiers, then use the current manual for that set. The LG G4/G5 specification sheet is useful as an example of model-specific listings, but it should not replace the manual and specifications for a different TV.

Model checks matter even when two sets share a product-family name. LG’s G4/G5 specification sheet lists features by model and size, which is a reminder to check the exact set rather than assuming every size and generation has identical capabilities. Region can also matter to the menu or feature set, so use the documentation for the television you own rather than copying a path or feature list from another market.

When a menu label differs, look for the setting within the picture or gaming controls identified in your model manual rather than following an exact button sequence from a different webOS generation. The LG support articles provide useful entry points, but their paths are specific to the software versions and sets they address. Do not infer that a feature is supported merely because an instruction page explains where it appears on a supported TV.

A practical setup checklist

  • For films, begin with Filmmaker Mode or Cinema; choose based on availability and how it looks in your room.
  • For movies, treat LG’s lighting table as a published reference, not a personalized calibration or universal numeric prescription.
  • For gaming, use the HDMI input connected to the console or PC and activate Game Optimizer before adjusting available options.
  • For HDR games, compare HGiG with Tone Mapping ON when supported, and complete in-game HDR calibration where available.
  • For VRR or G-Sync, verify support for the precise TV and connected hardware before expecting a setting or feature to work.
  • Use the manual for the exact model when a control is missing, renamed or behaves differently from another LG TV.

For a movie setup, pick the mode first, then assess the image under your usual room lighting and with familiar content. For a gaming setup, begin with the HDMI input and Game Optimizer, then check the specific HDR or variable-refresh options your connected equipment supports. In both cases, make one change at a time and use the exact model manual when a setting does not match the instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best picture settings for an LG OLED TV?

There is no single best set of numbers for every LG OLED. For movies, start with Filmmaker Mode or Cinema; for games, activate Game Optimizer. Adjust the picture for your room and preferences, and treat LG’s published lighting examples as general guidance rather than a personalized calibration.

Should I use Filmmaker Mode or Cinema for movies?

Both are movie-oriented starting points in LG’s guidance. Try the mode available on your TV with the same content and room lighting, then keep the presentation you prefer. LG says Filmmaker Mode Auto Start can switch modes when supported movie content is accessed, but availability and menu paths vary by model.

Are LG’s OLED Light values of 100 or 80 recommended for every TV?

No. LG USA Support’s September 3, 2026 table lists OLED Light examples of 100 for Natural Light (Vivid) and 80 for Artificial Light (Standard) and Dark Room (Cinema). LG describes its examples as affected by lighting, screen reflectance, settings and content, so they are not universal targets.

Why does HGiG look darker than Tone Mapping ON?

LG says HGiG may look darker than Tone Mapping ON. The difference alone does not indicate a problem. Compare both options in the same supported HDR game, and use the game’s own HDR calibration screen when available. The better fit depends on your TV, source, game and preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I find Game Optimizer, HGiG, VRR or G-Sync?

Menu names and paths differ across webOS generations, and some options appear only when the relevant game mode is active. Select the HDMI input used by your console or PC, activate Game Optimizer, then check your exact model manual and connected-device specifications. Feature support varies by TV model, size and source.

Does every LG OLED support VRR or G-Sync?

No. LG says compatibility depends on the TV model and graphics card, and its instructions describe enabling the feature through Game Optimizer on supported sets. Check the exact TV and device documentation, including the required connection, before expecting the feature to appear.

The Bottom Line

For movies, begin with Filmmaker Mode or Cinema and adjust for your room; for gaming, connect over HDMI and activate Game Optimizer. LG’s room-based numbers are examples, not universal calibration values, and HGiG, VRR and G-Sync depend on the TV and connected equipment. When a menu or capability does not match, check the manual for your exact model.
