Lexus recommends premium unleaded gasoline rated at 91 octane or higher for the GX. Regular gas is not the stated fuel for normal use: Lexus says performance decreases without premium. One specific exception appears in the U.S. 2010 GX 460 owner’s manual, which permits 87 octane if 91 is unavailable, with a warning about knocking. Check the manual for your GX 460’s model year before relying on that fallback.
What fuel does Lexus recommend for the GX?
Lexus’s 2023 GX brochure says its ratings were achieved using premium unleaded gasoline rated at 91 octane or higher. It adds: “If premium fuel is not used, performance will decrease.” The 2025 GX brochure repeats the 91-octane-or-higher guidance and the performance disclosure. These statements establish Lexus’s premium-fuel recommendation; they do not quantify how much performance changes or what effect a different fuel grade has on fuel economy.
Although those brochures describe the GX rather than providing a year-by-year GX 460 owner-manual rule, they reinforce that premium is the recommended choice. The most useful instructions for a specific GX 460 are in the owner’s manual for that vehicle.

The documented 2010 GX 460 fallback
The U.S. 2010 GX 460 owner’s manual says that if 91 octane is unavailable, unleaded gasoline as low as 87 octane may be used. The same manual warns that fuel below 91 may cause engine knocking and that persistent knocking can lead to engine damage. This is conditional guidance for the 2010 model covered by that manual—not permission to use regular gas routinely, nor a rule established for every GX 460 year or market.

For other model years
Do not assume the 2010 exception applies to another GX 460. Check the fuel section of the owner’s manual for your model year and market. If it calls for premium and does not explicitly allow a lower-octane fallback, follow the stated recommendation rather than treating 87 as an approved substitute.
What to do if premium is unavailable
- Check your vehicle’s manual. Use the fuel grade and any fallback instructions listed for your exact model year and market.
- If you have a U.S. 2010 GX 460, its manual allows 87 octane when 91 is unavailable, while warning of possible knocking and potential engine damage if knocking persists.
- For another year, use a lower grade only if that vehicle’s manual explicitly permits it. The available Lexus brochures recommend 91 octane or higher and say performance decreases without premium; they do not establish an 87-octane exception for every GX 460.
In the United States, pump octane is ordinarily displayed using the anti-knock index. Follow the octane label and terminology in your vehicle’s manual; the cited 2010 manual also gives a Research Octane Number equivalent.

Does regular gas save money or risk damage?
The available sources do not provide a measured cost or fuel-economy comparison for regular versus premium, or a probability of engine damage. Lexus’s brochures state reduced performance without premium, while the 2010 manual specifically warns that fuel below 91 may cause knocking and that persistent knocking can lead to engine damage. Those statements do not support a precise savings estimate or a claim that regular fuel always causes damage.
