The Lexar PLAY X is a compact M.2 2230 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD bundled with a carrier that lets it fit compatible M.2 2280 slots. Lexar claims sequential speeds up to 7,400MB/s read and 6,400MB/s write, and one desktop review measured results near those figures. The key trade-off is that the adapter broadens physical fit, not universal compatibility: check your device’s interface, clearance and upgrade guidance before buying. Availability and pricing also depend on region and date.
What the PLAY X is—and what the adapter changes
PLAY X is an M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD built in the shorter 2230 form factor. It can be installed directly in a compatible 2230 slot. For a compatible 2280 slot, Lexar includes a carrier that extends the drive to the longer form factor. Lexar describes both installation options in its March 31, 2026 Japan launch announcement.
The carrier addresses physical length; it does not change the SSD’s interface or make it suitable for every handheld, laptop or desktop. Before ordering, confirm the device accepts M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 storage, that the slot and mounting points support the intended configuration, and that there is enough clearance. Follow the device maker’s upgrade instructions, including any requirements for heat management or access.

Lexar’s specifications
Lexar advertises sequential read speeds up to 7,400MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 6,400MB/s. These are manufacturer maximum claims, not guaranteed application speeds; results depend on the host and workload.

One desktop review
GamesRadar+ tested a 1TB review unit in a desktop rig with the drive fitted to its 2280 carrier. Across four CrystalDiskMark runs, the outlet reported average sequential results of 7,074.43MB/s read and 6,551.29MB/s write. In the same setup, its average Counter-Strike 2 load time was 25.61 seconds, compared with 22.99 seconds for the system’s onboard storage. Those figures describe that review’s tests, not a universal result or a test of PLAY X in a handheld.
The reviewer explicitly did not test the bare 2230 drive in a compatible handheld or laptop. The desktop results therefore cannot establish how it will perform in a particular portable device, nor do the sequential figures alone predict game load times. Capacity, launch pricing and regional availability
Lexar’s March 2026 announcement listed Japan launch prices of ¥19,800 for 512GB and ¥39,800 for 1TB. It named Amazon.co.jp, Applied and Tsukumo as planned Japanese sales channels. These are announced launch prices, not current quotes or confirmation of stock.
The announcement said 2TB and 4TB models were planned. GamesRadar+’s August 2026 review described 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities and said the reviewed 1TB unit was not yet available in the US at that time. That dated report does not establish current US availability, prices or inventory. Check the exact capacity and model with sellers in your region before making a purchase decision.

Who should consider it?
- Consider it if your device supports a 2230 NVMe drive, or if you also have a compatible 2280 slot, and you value having the included carrier for those two physical configurations.
- Check carefully first if you are upgrading a handheld or laptop. The available review’s performance measurements are from a desktop installation, not a portable-device test.
- Compare local options if you need a particular capacity or need to buy immediately. Regional stock, price and the availability of planned capacities are not established by the dated launch and review reports.
Do not confuse PLAY X with the older PLAY 2230
Lexar’s PLAY 2230 is a separate product. Its 2023 product sheet lists maximum sequential speeds of 5,200MB/s read and 4,700MB/s write; those figures are not PLAY X specifications. Refer to the PLAY 2230 product sheet when distinguishing the older drive.
