Neither is always riskier. A leveraged ETF bought with cash generally caps your loss at the amount invested, but its daily reset can make multiday returns diverge sharply from the benchmark. Margin is a broker loan: interest accrues, falling collateral can trigger a margin call or forced sale, and you can lose more than your account contribution. Buying a leveraged ETF with borrowed money combines both sets of risks.

What the comparison actually means

A leveraged ETF and a margin account are different ways to create or increase market exposure. A leveraged ETF is a fund whose stated objective is usually a multiple of a benchmark’s daily return. Margin is borrowing from a broker to buy securities; the securities in the account act as collateral for the loan. One is a fund with a compounding daily target; the other is a loan secured by investments.

The word “short-term” does not settle which is riskier. It could mean holding through one trading day, several volatile sessions, or a period long enough for financing costs and compounding to matter. The relevant comparison is the actual exposure each method creates, what asset you hold, how long you plan to hold it, and whether a price decline can force you to add cash or sell.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s investor bulletins explain these mechanics: its August 29, 2023 bulletin covers leveraged and inverse ETFs, while its 2021 bulletin covers margin. They are general investor education, not a determination that either approach is suitable for a particular person.

How leveraged ETFs work over one day and beyond

The target is usually daily, not multiday

Most leveraged ETFs reset each day to pursue a stated multiple of the benchmark’s daily return. As the SEC puts it, they are designed to achieve their stated objectives on a daily basis. A 2x fund seeks about twice the benchmark’s return for a day, before the effects of fees and other fund factors; it does not promise twice the benchmark’s return over a week, month, or any other multiday period.

That daily distinction matters because the fund’s exposure is reset as the benchmark moves. Each day’s result builds on the fund’s changed value after the prior day. The order and size of daily moves therefore influence the cumulative result. A benchmark can finish a period near, or above, where it began while a leveraged fund loses value along the way.

Compounding can change the result

Consider a simplified two-day illustration. If an index rises on day one and then falls by the same percentage on day two, the index does not return exactly to its starting value: the second move applies to a larger base. A daily-multiple fund applies its target to each day’s benchmark move and then compounds from its own new value. This path dependence means that multiplying the benchmark’s total multiday return by the fund’s daily multiple is not a reliable way to estimate the fund’s return.

Volatility can make this gap more consequential. A sequence of alternating gains and losses can erode a leveraged fund’s value even when the benchmark’s net move is modest. A persistent move in one direction may produce a different relationship. Neither pattern is a prediction: the exact result depends on the daily path, the fund’s objective, and its actual costs and tracking.

SEC examples show why a simple multiple can mislead

In an example in its 2023 bulletin, the SEC describes an index that gained 2% over four months while an ETF targeting twice the index’s daily return lost 6%. An inverse ETF targeting twice the inverse daily return lost 25% over that same period. In a separate four-month example involving different indices and products, an index gained around 8%, while a 3x daily ETF fell 53% and a 3x inverse ETF fell 90%.

These are historical illustrations from the SEC, not forecasts or matched comparisons between products. They show that a daily target cannot be read as a multimonth promise. Before buying, read the particular fund’s objective and disclosures, including how it measures the daily target and what risks, expenses, and tax considerations it identifies.

How margin creates exposure—and a possible cash obligation

The broker lends against account collateral

When you buy securities on margin, you contribute some of the purchase amount and borrow the rest from your broker. The securities in the account secure that loan. You owe interest under the broker’s terms, so the cost of holding the position can continue even if the investment does not rise. The broker’s margin agreement and current disclosures determine the applicable rates, requirements, and procedures; these terms are firm-specific and can change.

Borrowing increases the market exposure relative to the cash you contributed. That magnifies the effect of a price move on your equity: a decline reduces the value of the collateral while the loan remains owed. The position can become too small relative to the broker’s requirements, even if you have not chosen to sell.

What happens after a margin call

If your account no longer meets a maintenance requirement, your broker may require you to deposit more cash or eligible collateral. A margin call is not a guarantee that you will have time to respond at your preferred price. The SEC warns that a broker may sell securities in the account without consulting you to satisfy the loan. A forced sale during a decline can lock in losses, and selling some holdings may not necessarily eliminate the shortfall.

The exact trigger, notice process, eligible collateral, and time allowed depend on the broker’s agreement and requirements. Do not assume one universal maintenance percentage, response window, or margin rate. Check the current agreement and ask the broker how it handles a shortfall, including whether it may liquidate positions without prior contact.

Losses can exceed your contribution

With a margin purchase, the investment’s value can fall below the amount owed. In that case, selling the collateral may not cover the debt, and you can owe more than the cash you initially put in. The SEC’s 2021 margin bulletin states plainly: “You can lose more money than you have invested.” That is the critical difference from a cash-funded ETF purchase when comparing maximum loss.

Side-by-side: what changes the risk

Question Leveraged ETF bought with cash Securities bought on margin
Where does the extra exposure come from? The fund targets a stated multiple of a benchmark’s daily return. A broker loan lets you purchase more securities than your cash alone would buy.
How does exposure behave over time? Most funds reset daily; compounding makes multiday results path-dependent. The loan balance remains subject to the broker’s terms, while the securities’ market value changes.
What ongoing costs matter? Fund expenses and other costs identified in that fund’s disclosures; the SEC notes fees may be higher than those of traditional ETFs. Interest and any other charges set out in the broker’s current terms.
Can a price decline force action? A cash purchase by itself does not create a broker loan or margin call. Falling collateral can lead to a margin call or broker-initiated sale under the agreement.
Can losses exceed the amount contributed? For an ETF bought with cash, the SEC says the loss is generally limited to the amount invested. Yes. The SEC warns losses can exceed invested capital.
What if the leveraged ETF is bought with borrowed money? Both mechanics apply: the fund has daily-reset and compounding risk, and the borrowed purchase can expose you to interest, a margin call, forced sale, and losses beyond your contribution.

Which is riskier for your intended holding period?

If you mean one trading day

For a one-day position, compare the ETF’s stated daily objective with the exposure you would create through the margin loan. A leveraged fund’s objective is explicitly framed around a daily benchmark result, but its expenses and actual fund performance still matter. Margin’s outcome depends on the security’s price movement, how much you borrow, and the broker’s financing and account terms. Neither comparison can be made from the label “2x,” “3x,” or “margin” alone.

If you mean several days or longer

For a multiday holding, daily resetting and volatility become central to a leveraged ETF’s outcome. For margin, the amount borrowed, interest, changing collateral value, and the risk of a maintenance shortfall remain central. The longer exposure is held, the more opportunity there is for daily market paths, financing charges, and account rules to affect the result. This does not make one choice automatically safer; it identifies which mechanics to model for the intended period.

If the underlying asset is volatile or concentrated

The underlying matters as much as the financing method. A leveraged ETF linked to a volatile or concentrated benchmark can experience sharp daily moves and a significant compounding effect. A margin purchase of a volatile security can also see collateral value fall quickly toward a broker’s maintenance threshold. Review what the fund tracks or what security you would hold, not just the exposure multiple. A broad-market benchmark and a narrow sector or single asset are not interchangeable risk exposures.

A practical comparison before taking either position

  1. Write down the exposure. Identify the benchmark or security, the ETF’s stated daily multiple if relevant, and the total market exposure you intend to hold. For margin, include both your cash and the amount borrowed; compare exposure with your own equity rather than looking only at the purchase value.
  2. Set the holding period. Decide whether “short-term” means one session or multiple days. If it is more than one day, do not project a leveraged ETF’s result by multiplying the benchmark’s cumulative return by the daily target.
  3. Examine volatility and concentration. Consider how large daily moves or reversals in the underlying could affect the position. Use the fund’s own objective and disclosures for a leveraged ETF, and the characteristics of the actual security for a margin purchase.
  4. Read the relevant cost terms. Review fund expenses and tax-efficiency considerations in the ETF materials. For margin, check your broker’s current interest rate, how interest is charged, maintenance requirements, and the margin agreement. Do not rely on a rate or threshold quoted for another firm or at another time.
  5. Ask what happens in a decline. For a cash-funded ETF, understand that the investment can lose value, potentially up to the amount invested. For margin, find out when the broker can demand more collateral or sell holdings, and whether it can act without consulting you.
  6. Keep the combinations distinct. A cash purchase of a leveraged ETF is not the same as buying that ETF on margin. If borrowed funds are involved, analyze the fund’s daily-reset risks and the broker loan’s costs and liquidation rules together.

Can you lose more than you invest with a leveraged ETF?

If you buy ETF shares entirely with cash, the SEC says your loss is generally limited to the amount invested in those shares. That does not mean the fund cannot lose most or all of its value. The answer changes if you borrow to buy the ETF: the fund’s value can fall while the loan remains due, so your loss can exceed your own contribution. Keep “leveraged ETF” and “leveraged account position” separate when assessing maximum loss.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The SEC examples demonstrate the effect of daily compounding in specific historical four-month scenarios. They do not establish how a particular fund will perform in a future period, how a specific broker will set its margin terms, or which approach is suitable for an individual investor. Fund terms, tax implications, brokerage rates, and margin requirements vary. For decisions involving a particular fund or account, the controlling documents are that fund’s current disclosures and the broker’s current margin agreement.
