Letter Buddy is a local-first software project designed to help Telugu speakers understand English-language insurance, banking, pension, and utility letters. Its aim is to answer a practical question: “What is this letter saying, what do I need to do, and by when?” The builder describes a workflow that extracts text from a photo or PDF, identifies key details, and produces a plain Telugu explanation that can also be read aloud. It is a document explainer, not professional advice, and the project’s reported tests do not yet establish how well it works on real letters or for real users.
What Letter Buddy is meant to do
Builder Sricharan Resmai says he created Letter Buddy for a neighbor who needed help interpreting English-language official documents. The intended audience is someone who may otherwise have to ask another person to explain a notice from an insurer, bank, pension provider, or utility.
The result is supposed to make the letter easier to understand in Telugu, especially its main message, requested action, dates, and amounts. The author states the scope plainly: “It does not give advice.” The tool is meant to explain text, not decide what a person should do legally, medically, or financially.

The builder describes a sequence that starts with a phone photo or PDF and ends with a large-text letter card and optional spoken Telugu. The reported implementation uses Tesseract through PyTesseract for OCR, Ollama to run a local language model, Qwen2.5:3b for explanation, and eSpeak NG’s Telugu voice for read-aloud.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Capture and prepare: A user supplies a photo or PDF. The application is described as correcting orientation and skew, reducing noise, and improving contrast before text recognition.
- Recognize the document: OCR converts the image into text. The current setup is reported as Tesseract via PyTesseract.
- Extract candidate facts: Ordinary code identifies items such as dates, amounts, phone numbers, email addresses, URLs, and reference numbers. This step produces candidate values rather than asking the language model to invent them.
- Explain in Telugu: The local Qwen2.5:3b model is described as referring to those extracted candidates when explaining the letter. The builder says structured-output and grounding checks reject unknown candidate IDs and verify values against the OCR text.
- Present and read aloud: The application displays a large-text summary card and can use eSpeak NG’s Telugu voice to speak the explanation.
That separation matters: extracting a date from recognized text is different from asking a model to interpret what the date means. The design attempts to keep important values tied to the document while using the model for explanation. Those safeguards are implementation claims from the builder, not independently reproduced results.
What “offline” means in this project
Resmai describes the normal workflow as running locally without a cloud AI API: the application runs on a laptop, and a phone browser can connect from the same local network. The project is intended to avoid sending sensitive documents to a third-party inference service.

The author also describes a loopback-oriented local endpoint, a network guard, a Forget action, and cleanup. However, the post says the guard covers Python-level sockets specifically. This makes “offline” a stated design and testing claim, not an independently confirmed guarantee covering every component or network behavior. The proposed demonstration with Wi-Fi disabled remains uncompleted in the submission.

What the reported tests do—and do not—show
The builder reports OCR word-error-rate results on a synthetic English insurance-letter sample. The comparison led to choosing English-only OCR for English documents rather than automatically enabling English and Telugu together.

| EasyOCR with English and Telugu | 43.68% | Same synthetic sample and author-reported test, 2026. |
These figures describe that sample only. They do not establish accuracy for other document layouts, languages, handwriting, or photo conditions.
The submission also reports 61 passes, 0 failures, 0 warnings, and 8 manual checks remaining. It lists 100% extraction accuracy on synthetic checks and passing results for several digit-preservation and safety checks. These are the builder’s reported project verification outcomes, not an independently audited test suite or proof of real-world performance.

Safeguards and practical limitations
The project description says it can ask for a retake when OCR quality is poor, escalate high-stakes documents to a human, and flag suspicious requests involving OTPs, PINs, CVVs, passwords, or urgent payment instructions. It also describes checks intended to guard against prompt injection in document text, unsupported candidate IDs, ungrounded numbers, and advice-like output. The reported synthetic checks do not establish how reliably these safeguards work on actual documents or adversarial inputs.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Handwriting, stamps, shadows, and difficult photos can weaken OCR.
- A small local model may be less fluent than a large hosted model, particularly for regional-language translation.
- The eSpeak NG Telugu voice is described by the author as robotic.
- A trusted person should review important documents; the tool is not a substitute for a lawyer, doctor, accountant, banker, or other qualified professional.
How much user validation is established?
The project submission leaves important handover details unfilled: who received the tool, which real letter they tried, where they hesitated, what they said, what worked, and what should change. It also leaves the proposed Wi-Fi-disabled demonstration incomplete. These gaps mean the submission does not establish user effectiveness or confirm the offline behavior in that demonstration; they do not prove that such activities never happened elsewhere.
The author lists an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU with 6141 MiB of VRAM, but does not provide system RAM, peak VRAM during a full run, time per letter, or token throughput. No performance estimate can be drawn from the listed hardware alone.
How to judge the project today
Letter Buddy describes a thoughtful approach to a real access problem: explain an official letter in a language the recipient understands, while keeping the document-processing workflow local and anchoring key values to OCR text. The reported synthetic tests offer a limited view of component behavior, not proof that the explanation will be accurate, understandable, or safe for a person handling a consequential notice.
For any important letter, a reader should verify dates and amounts against the original, check the requested action with a trusted person or qualified professional, and avoid relying on the generated explanation as the sole basis for a decision. The available submission is an author account with incomplete handover and demo sections, so demonstrated real-world usefulness remains unestablished.
