For most public websites, Let’s Encrypt is the right choice. It issues free, browser-trusted Domain Validation (DV) TLS certificates and can automate issuance, installation, renewal and revocation through ACME. Choose a paid certificate only when you have a concrete need for verified organization identity (OV or EV), contractual support, centralized certificate lifecycle management or another documented service feature. Paying a certificate authority does not, by itself, make HTTPS encryption stronger.

The practical decision is therefore not “free versus secure.” It is domain-only validation and automation versus additional identity, support and management requirements. This guide explains the differences, current lifetime changes and the operational work required for either option.

What Let’s Encrypt and a paid certificate actually provide

A TLS certificate binds a public key to a domain name and is signed by a certificate authority (CA). During an HTTPS connection, the browser verifies that signature, the certificate’s validity period and the requested hostname before negotiating encrypted traffic. A correctly configured certificate from a free or paid CA can support the same modern TLS protocols and cipher suites; the price is not a cryptographic security rating.

Let’s Encrypt’s service is deliberately narrow. Its ACME client proves that you control a domain, then requests a DV certificate. Let’s Encrypt’s FAQ says the certificates are free, browser-trusted and intended to enable secure HTTPS connections; it also states that Let’s Encrypt does not issue Organization Validation (OV) or Extended Validation (EV) certificates. See the Let’s Encrypt FAQ and How It Works.

A paid product may add a different validation level or services around the certificate. Commercial offerings commonly advertise OV or EV validation, support channels, inventory and policy controls, monitoring, installation assistance, seals, vulnerability assessments or a vendor-stated warranty. Those are product and service terms, not proof that the underlying TLS connection is more strongly encrypted. Treat any warranty, seal or assessment as a separate contractual feature and check its eligibility, exclusions and limits.

DV, OV and EV: choose the identity the certificate must establish

Domain Validation (DV)

DV proves control of a domain. ACME challenges can require the applicant to publish a token at a specific HTTP path, add a DNS record or complete another approved control. Once the challenge succeeds, the CA issues a certificate for the validated name. The certificate does not assert that the applicant is a legally verified company.

DV is normally sufficient for a personal site, blog, portfolio, community, documentation site, ordinary small-business website or other public service whose relying parties only need to know that the connection reached the domain owner. It is also the validation type Let’s Encrypt provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organization Validation (OV)

OV adds checks intended to validate an organization behind the domain. The exact checks and evidence requirements vary by CA and product. If your procurement policy, a partner contract or an internal control explicitly requires organization information in the certificate, compare paid OV products and confirm the current issuance requirements before ordering.

Extended Validation (EV)

EV applies a more extensive organization-validation process under applicable industry rules. It is relevant only when a relying party or policy specifically requires EV. Do not assume EV automatically creates a special browser indicator or increases visitor confidence; current browser interfaces and user behavior are not established by the product descriptions considered here.

Let’s Encrypt versus paid certificates at a glance

Decision factor Let’s Encrypt Paid certificate product
Certificate charge Free certificates; no certificate fee. Price varies by CA, validation level, coverage and service package. Confirm current terms directly with the issuer.
Validation offered DV only; no OV or EV. (Let’s Encrypt FAQ) Some products offer DV, OV and/or EV. Availability and requirements differ by CA.
Issuance and renewal ACME automation is the intended workflow. You operate the client, deploy the certificate and monitor it. (How It Works) May support ACME, vendor APIs, portals or managed integrations. Verify compatibility with your server and deployment process.
Support Documentation and community-oriented service; no paid support tier is implied by the free certificate. Commercial support options may be available. Check response targets, hours, escalation and what the plan actually covers.
Inventory and lifecycle controls You build or integrate monitoring, inventory and deployment controls around ACME. Some vendors advertise centralized inventory, workflow approvals, reporting and monitoring. These are management features, not stronger encryption.
Best fit Sites needing ordinary HTTPS and domain validation with reliable automation. Organizations with a documented OV/EV, support, policy or fleet-management requirement.

Which option fits your situation?

Personal site, blog or portfolio

Use Let’s Encrypt when you control the domain and can run an ACME client. A free DV certificate covers the ordinary browser-trust requirement. Budget time for installation, automatic renewal and alerts rather than for a certificate purchase.

Small business or public marketing site

Let’s Encrypt is usually appropriate if customers only need a secure connection to your domain. Consider a paid product only if a customer, regulator, insurer or procurement document requires OV/EV, a support agreement or a specific management capability. Ask the party imposing the requirement what it verifies; do not pay for a validation level that no relying party checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Online service with many domains or servers

Both free and paid certificates create an inventory and deployment problem at scale. Compare ACME support, API access, renewal orchestration, key handling, approvals, audit logs, rate-limit planning and alerting. A paid lifecycle platform can be justified by operational control, but the certificate fee alone does not solve unattended renewal.

Regulated or contract-driven environment

Start with the written requirement. If it names OV, EV, a particular CA, support response or evidence retention, select a product that meets that requirement and retain the issuance records. If it merely says “HTTPS,” a DV certificate can satisfy the transport requirement when deployed correctly.

Team without dependable automation

Do not choose a paid certificate as a substitute for operations. Short public-certificate lifetimes make manual calendars fragile. First establish an ACME-compatible client or certificate-management workflow, automated installation and reload, and alerts for failed renewals. Then decide whether paid support or centralized tooling adds value.

Total cost: include people and failure risk

Let’s Encrypt removes the certificate line item, but it does not remove engineering work. Someone must authorize domains, protect account keys, run the ACME client, install the renewed certificate, reload the web server, test the result and respond to failures. For a small fleet this may be straightforward; for a large fleet, the staff time and outage risk can exceed a certificate invoice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A paid certificate’s total cost can include the certificate, validation labor, support, inventory software, deployment integrations and renewal administration. Compare those costs with the work your team would otherwise perform. Ask for the exact number of domains, wildcard or multi-domain coverage, private-key controls, API limits, support scope and contract terms. Do not treat a vendor’s advertised warranty as guaranteed reimbursement for a typical website; eligibility and exclusions control.

How ACME issuance works with Let’s Encrypt

ACME is an automated protocol based on IETF RFC 8555. Let’s Encrypt describes its objective as enabling an HTTPS server to obtain browser-trusted certificates without human intervention. The protocol does not eliminate operator responsibility: your client still needs credentials, network access, correct DNS or HTTP challenge routing and permission to install the resulting files. See the ACME protocol documentation.

  1. Install a compatible ACME client. Use a client supported by your operating system, hosting platform or reverse proxy. Keep it updated and restrict access to its account and private-key files.
  2. Identify the names to cover. List every hostname, including the apex domain, www name, API endpoints and any names on separate servers. Request only names you control and need.
  3. Complete a challenge. For HTTP-01, the client publishes a token at the requested HTTP path. For DNS-01, it creates the required DNS record. Ensure redirects, firewalls, proxies and load balancers allow the challenge to reach the correct system.
  4. Receive and install the certificate. Configure the web server, load balancer or ingress to use the new certificate and private key. Preserve the correct certificate chain and file permissions.
  5. Reload safely. Automate a graceful reload after a successful issuance. A certificate sitting on disk is not useful if the running service still presents the old one.
  6. Test from outside the server. Check the served hostname, chain, expiration, intermediate certificates, SNI behavior and every endpoint behind a load balancer.
  7. Monitor the complete job. Alert on failed challenge, failed issuance, failed installation, reload errors and certificates approaching expiration. Log enough detail to diagnose the failure without exposing private keys.

Let’s Encrypt’s Integration Guide recommends automated renewal and monitoring. For large fleets, spread issuance over time instead of creating a synchronized renewal spike.

How a paid certificate workflow differs

  1. Define the required validation and names. Confirm whether the requirement is DV, OV or EV and whether you need single-name, wildcard or multi-domain coverage.
  2. Submit the order and validation evidence. DV may use domain-control challenges; OV/EV can require organization records and additional verification. Follow the CA’s current instructions.
  3. Generate and protect the private key. Create the key on the target system or an approved key-management service. Send the certificate signing request, not the private key, to the CA.
  4. Install the issued chain. Configure each server, appliance or load balancer with the certificate and the CA-provided intermediate chain. Test every deployment location.
  5. Automate renewal where possible. Use ACME, a vendor API or an approved certificate-management integration. If renewal remains portal-based, assign ownership, backup coverage and escalation dates.
  6. Record lifecycle evidence. Maintain inventory, issuance dates, validation status, key owner, deployment locations and revocation procedures. Confirm that any support or warranty benefit applies to your product and use case.

Certificate lifetimes are shortening

Validity is a moving operational constraint. Let’s Encrypt’s FAQ, last updated April 28, 2025, lists 90-day default certificates and optional six-day short-lived certificates. Those figures are time-qualified and should not be treated as permanent policy.

Renewal timing and monitoring that will survive the changes

Let’s Encrypt recommends checking ACME Renewal Information (ARI) at least twice daily where supported. As a fallback, renew with roughly one-third of the certificate’s lifetime remaining; for a current 90-day certificate, its integration guidance describes about 30 days before expiration. ARI-aware clients can receive issuer-provided timing instead of relying on a hard-coded calendar date.

  • Use ARI when available. Test that your client and certificate-management system support it.
  • Automate deployment and reload. Renewal is incomplete until every serving endpoint presents the new certificate.
  • Alert before expiry and on job failure. Monitor both certificate age and the success of the renewal pipeline.
  • Review fixed schedules. Scripts written for 90-day or one-year assumptions may fail as lifetimes shorten.
  • Exercise recovery. Document how to rerun a failed challenge, restore a previous certificate, revoke a compromised key and reach the responsible operator.

These controls matter regardless of whether the certificate is free or paid. A paid plan may provide additional dashboards or support, but your team still needs a tested deployment path.

Common misconceptions and failure modes

“Paid means stronger encryption.”

Incorrect. Encryption strength depends on the TLS protocol, negotiated algorithms, key protection and server configuration. Certificate price does not select a stronger cipher suite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A DV certificate proves the company is legitimate.”

Incorrect. DV proves control of the domain, not legal identity. Use OV or EV only when the relying party has a real identity requirement and the CA’s validation process meets it.

“Installing the certificate once is enough.”

Incorrect. Certificates expire and may need replacement, revocation or emergency rotation. Load balancers, staging systems and secondary servers are frequent places where an old certificate remains active.

“A paid warranty transfers all risk.”

Do not assume that. Warranty programs have defined beneficiaries, qualifying events, proof requirements, exclusions and monetary limits. Read the current policy for the specific product.

“Manual renewal is acceptable because the certificate lasts months.”

Shortening schedules make that increasingly unsafe. Use automation, monitor it and keep a documented manual recovery procedure for exceptional failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Does a contract, regulator or partner explicitly require OV or EV?
  • Does anyone actually inspect organization information in the certificate?
  • Can your infrastructure run ACME or another automated issuance method?
  • Who owns private keys, deployment, reloads and incident response?
  • How many domains, certificates and serving endpoints must be tracked?
  • Do you need vendor support with defined response targets?
  • Do you need centralized inventory, approvals, audit logs or policy enforcement?
  • Can your monitoring alert on challenge failures and expired certificates?
  • Have you tested renewal on every proxy, load balancer and application endpoint?
  • Will your automation handle 64-day and 45-day Let’s Encrypt schedules?

Bottom line

Choose Let’s Encrypt when your website needs browser-trusted HTTPS and domain validation, and you can operate reliable ACME automation. Choose a paid TLS product when a documented requirement calls for OV/EV identity, vendor support or lifecycle-management features that your team cannot or should not build itself. In both cases, the decisive security work is the same: protect keys, deploy the full chain correctly, automate renewal and monitor every endpoint.
