Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370: At First Glance

Two years after Lenovo released the first convertible Yoga laptop, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 also hit the market in 2014.

The Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 comes as a total rebuild to the Yoga lineup. That is mainly because Lenovo improved on the multimode function and the laptop’s hardware which might excite you.

However, the new changes and exciting offers in this model increased its price compared to its predecessors. Speaking of which, in May 2022, when I wrote this review, the laptop had a price tag of $1,099.99.

As expected, the high cost of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 might call for questions like – is it worth its price? Read on for an answer to that question.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370: Design, Display, and Sound

The Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 comes with an astonishing look and a sleek appearance. This laptop’s sleek appearance is owed to its slim, dazzling chassis, but it looks somewhat fragile.

Speaking of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370’s chassis, some parts are made from plastic, while others are made with anodized aluminum. Specifically, the laptop’s lid and base are built with anodized aluminum, while the laptop’s deck and keyboard are made of plastic.

The anodized aluminum on the lid and base of the laptop gives it a sturdy feel. Hence, the laptop is not as fragile as it appears.

You can get this laptop in silver color with a black laptop deck. Undoubtedly, the silver-black combination of colors gives a stylish look to the laptop.

Meanwhile, the top-left edge of the lid has the ”Lenovo” logo boldly inscribed. Therefore, even from a distance, you will know that this is a Lenovo laptop.

The lid connects to the base of the laptop with the help of six watchband-like hinges. These hinges look like the link of a Rolex wristwatch.

Also, the hinges run down the whole length of the lid’s base from edge to edge.

Unlike the dual hinges from the previous Yoga models, the six hinges on the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 permit it to be bent up to 360 degrees. This enables you to use the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 in more functional usage modes than the predecessor with just two modes.

Speaking of which, you can use the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 in four different modes. These modes include tent mode, laptop mode, stand mode, and tablet mode.

The tablet mode describes using this laptop when you bend the screen 360 degrees backward to rest on the base. In tablet mode, the keyboard folds to the back.

Hence, you can only use the touchscreen for text input. Furthermore, when you fold this laptop into an inverted ”V” shape to enable it to stand, that is known as tent mode.

Still, on the usage modes, it is also possible to use this laptop in a stand mode where it takes a backward “L” shape. The screen faces the user in stand mode while the keyboard is turned face down to support it.

Lastly, there is the usage mode called the laptop mode, which is the most common of them all. This mode allows you to use this laptop as a regular one, giving you access to a keyboard.

Thankfully, all four modes give you access to use the laptop’s 13.3-inch display. As I mentioned earlier, the display is touch-enabled, and you can use it for text input instead of the keyboard.

Additionally, the touchscreen display supports multi-touch gestures. These enable you to pinch the screen to zoom in and out of an image and also swipe through the screen with three fingers.

The display has a QHD+ (3200 x 1800 pixels) resolution. For your information, a QHD+ display resolution has higher pixels and better performance compared to a lower-resolution display such as FHD.

Therefore, you will get sharp and crisp display quality with the higher pixels on this laptop’s display. In addition to the display resolution, we will also talk about the other display features of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370.

Starting with the IPS panel of the display, this gives the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 a wide viewing angle. By wide viewing angle, I mean that you will get a clear view of whatever angle you view the screen from.

Aside from its wide viewing angles, the display is also LED-backlit. Unlike other display backlights, LED gives an even light distribution on this display.

For screen brightness, the laptop’s display measures 300 nits as the maximum, which is good enough. As a result of its respectable screen brightness, you can use the laptop outdoors.

As a means of making the screen durable, Lenovo has used corning gorilla glass which offers high resistance to scratches and cracks. The corning gorilla glass adds significant safety to the laptop by preventing screen damage.

Moving on, the bezels surrounding this laptop’s display are somewhat bulky. However, this creates room to accommodate a 1MP HD camera with a fixed focus on the top bezel.

Sadly, the webcam is blurry, and the images are not that clear, especially in dark environments. However, you can install Lenovo’s Settings software to give you additional camera settings for better performance.

The lower bezel, on the other hand, has a Windows logo that indicates that the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 runs on Windows OS.

Away from the display toward the laptop’s base, as expected, you will find the keyboard. The Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370’s keyboard provides a comfortable typing experience thanks to its soft-touch rubberized keys.

These keys are round and well-spaced, with a bright backlight that helps you type conveniently in the dark. Also, the black palm rest gives enough room for your hands to rest while typing.

In a nutshell, the laptop’s keyboard will not be a problem for your typing tasks. In fact, for aggressive touch typists, you might be able to hit 86 words per minute.

After the keyboard, the next thing you will notice on the laptop’s deck is the touchpad. Like most Lenovo laptops, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 uses an integrated touchpad with accurate cursor movement.

However, you will feel a restriction on the cursor when trying to move it too fast. Now that we have talked about the features on the laptop’s deck, let’s move on to the sides of the laptop.

The side of the laptop is where the connectivity ports are located. Specifically, the right side houses one USB 3.0 port and one audio combo jack for headphones and microphones.

On the laptop’s left side, you will find one USB 3.0 port, a 4-in-1 card reader, and one HDMI port. Also, you will find the AC charging port, which you can also use as a USB 2.0 port.

From the above numbers, it is quite sad that the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 has a few connectivity ports.

Next up in this section of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 review is a discussion about its sound performance. Hopefully, the dual speakers’ performance on this laptop will impress you.

These speakers are located at the base of the laptop. Thankfully, they produce a loud sound.

That said, let’s also discuss the weight and size of the laptop before we conclude this section. With respect to that, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 is very lightweight, weighing only 1190 g.

It also measures 330 x 228 x 12.8 mm (W x D x H), making it slim and portable. As a matter of fact, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 is one of the slimmest and most portable laptops you will find.

In light of that, let us quickly consider the weights and dimensions of other convertible laptops. Starting with the Lenovo Yoga C640, it has a weight of 2760 g, and it measures 306.8 x 204.4 x 16.9 mm (W x D x H).

In another comparison, the HP Spectre x360 – 13-AE086TU weighs 1260 g and measures 306.8 x 194.5 x 17 mm (W x D x H). With that in mind, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 is slimmer and lighter than the two competitors above.

Based on portability and its overall build, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 deserves a rating of nine out of ten in this section.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370: Processor (CPU) Performance

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 comes with an Intel Core M-5Y71 processor. This is a dual-core processor which has a base frequency of 1.20 GHz.

Furthermore, this processor has a boost frequency of 2.90 GHz and 4 MB cache memory. Sadly, the Intel Core M-5Y71 is an entry-level processor with expectedly low performance.

Therefore, this laptop may not perform optimally when it comes to intensive processing tasks, and that is disappointing for a laptop at this price. Nonetheless, to be sure of the laptop’s performance, I will be sharing its Cinebench R15 benchmark test result with you.

For your information, Cinebench R15 evaluates a processor’s single-core and multi-core performances. For clarity, single-core means that only a single processor core is evaluated.

Meanwhile, multi-core means that all the processor cores are evaluated. In any case, higher scores in the Cinebench R15 test indicate better performance.

Hence, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 scored 184 points in the multi-core test based on the test result. On the other hand, the laptop scored 92 points on the single-core test.

In comparison, ASUS Zenbook UX305UA-FC040T had a higher score of 123 points in the single-core test. Also, in the multi-core test, the ASUS laptop had a higher score of 312 points.

However, the better performance of the ASUS Zenbook UX305UA-FC040T is unsurprising because it uses a more powerful Intel Core i7-6500U processor.

In conclusion, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 uses an entry-level processor, which is not befitting of a laptop in its class. Therefore, I will be rating it seven out of ten in this processor review section.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370: Memory (RAM) Performance

The Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 comes with an LPDDR3 type of RAM, which has a speed of 1600 MHz. For memory capacity, this laptop ships with 8 GB RAM that is soldered to the motherboard.

This implies that you cannot remove the RAM or increase the size above 8 GB. However, 8 GB RAM on this laptop is powerful enough to multitask effectively.

Speaking of which, the laptop should be able to open up to twenty Chrome browser tabs.

Also, while surfing the internet on these tabs, you can stream YouTube videos on at least two of the tabs. Thankfully, these tasks will not cause the laptop to slow down.

For more insight into the laptop’s memory performance, I will be sharing its PCMark 8 test result. For those who do not know, PCMark 8 is a test tool that evaluates a computer’s overall performance in carrying out real-world activities.

High scores in the PCMark 8 test indicate good performance. Hence, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 scored 2307 points in the benchmark test.

In comparison, the ASUS Zenbook UX305UA-FC040T performed better. Specifically, it scored 2833 points on the same test.

In conclusion, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 comes with only 8 GB RAM, which cannot be increased. However, with the 8 GB RAM, the laptop can multitask to a reasonable extent.

Based on that, I will be rating it seven out of ten in this memory review section.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370: Storage Options and Performance

The Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 comes with a SATA SSD storage drive which takes a maximum size of 512 GB.

In case you don’t know, SSD is the best storage drive you can get on a laptop. It offers the fastest file transfer speed of any other storage drive.

Moreover, the 512 GB supported storage capacity provides a reasonable amount of storage space. However, heavy storage users might disagree with that.

If you are a heavy storage user, it might impress you to know that the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 comes with a 4-in-1 card reader. Therefore, you can expand the storage space by inserting a microSD card into the laptop with an SD card.

For a performance check, let us talk about the Crystaldiskmark benchmark result of this laptop. For better understanding, Crystaldiskmark measures a storage drive’s read and write speeds.

Speaking of the read speed, it describes how fast a computer opens a file that has been saved to its storage. On the other hand, write speed is how fast a computer saves a file to its storage.

You should note that higher read or write speeds in the benchmark test indicate better performance.

Therefore, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 had a read speed of 521.3 MBps in the test. On the other hand, the laptop had a write speed of 238.6 MBps.

In comparison, the Dell Inspiron 13 5379, which comes with the same storage type, had a lesser read speed of 447.9 MBps. However, it had a higher write speed of 304.8 MBps.

Therefore, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 will open files faster than the competitor above. However, the competitor – Dell Inspiron 13 5379 – will save files faster.

Considering this performance, I will be rating the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 eight out of ten in this storage review section.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370: Graphics Card Performance

The Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 comes with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 5300. This graphics card comes with a base frequency of 300 MHz and a boost frequency of 900 MHz.

Sadly, an integrated graphics card is not as powerful as a dedicated one and is not recommended for heavy graphics tasks. That is because integrated GPUs are usually embedded in the processor and do not have memory of their own.

Based on all I have said, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 is limited to light graphics tasks only. Nevertheless, the laptop should be able to play some games.

For instance, it can play BioShock Infinite (2013) at 30.8 fps in the lowest graphics setting. Also, in the same setting, the laptop will play Rise of the Tomb Raider (2016) at 6.6 fps.

Sadly, the gaming performance is very poor. Hence, if gaming is important to you, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 may not be the laptop you need.

At this point, let’s check the laptop’s graphics performance in the 3DMark benchmark test. Meanwhile, the 3DMark test evaluates a computer’s graphics rendering ability.

Moreover, just like the benchmarks in other sections of this review, higher scores in the 3DMark test mean better performance.

Therefore, in the benchmark test, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 scored
31,492 points. However, to know whether this is a good score or not, let’s compare it with other laptops in its category.

For instance, the ASUS Zenbook UX305UA-FC040T topped the performance table with a score of 56,569 points. However, you should be aware that it uses Intel HD 520 Graphics.

In conclusion, the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 has an integrated graphics card that is not suitable for intensive graphics tasks. Based on that, I will rate it seven out of ten in this graphics review section.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370: Battery Life and Performance

The Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 comes with a 4-cell, 44 WHr Li-Polymer battery which, according to Lenovo, can last for 9 hours.

Although the 9 hours of battery life is not totally a big deal, it is quite encouraging. However, we still have to consider if the laptop can truly last for the 9 hours Lenovo claimed.

To do that, let us consider a battery test carried out by notebookcheck.com. The test is about surfing the web continuously over a WiFi network with the laptop’s screen brightness set to 150 nits.

Consequently, the laptop lasted 4 hours and 23 minutes in the test, which is far below what Lenovo claimed. That is also below what its competitors got.

Speaking of competitors, the ASUS Zenbook UX305UA-FC040T lasted 9 hours and 35 minutes in the same test. However, the ASUS Zenbook UX305UA-FC040T uses a larger battery capacity of 56 WHr.

Putting all that together, I will give the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 a rating of six out of ten in this battery review section.
