The ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 combines a fixed set of front and rear connectors with rear-port options that vary by configuration. Check the exact machine before buying display cables or planning a multi-monitor installation: the standard rear panel includes HDMI and DisplayPort, while additional video, serial, USB-C, or parallel connectors may replace one another.
Lenovo’s current PSREF specifies support for up to three independent displays, two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots with a documented tested capacity of 64 GB, and a storage layout containing one 2.5-inch SATA drive position plus one M.2 SSD position. The sections below explain exactly what those limits mean in practice.
What is standard on the M75q Gen 2?
Lenovo’s current Product Specifications Reference (PSREF) for the ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 lists the standard front and rear connectors separately from optional rear-port configurations. The model page is marked withdrawn and shows a March 19, 2026 specification revision; that revision is the controlling source for the figures below. Lenovo’s December 10, 2025 PSREF PDF provides the detailed port listing.
Because the M75q Gen 2 was sold in multiple configurations, two machines with the same model name can have different rear panels. The front connectors are consistent in the PSREF listing, but the optional rear positions are selected when the system is configured.

Front-panel ports
| Connector | Lenovo’s description | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 | Data transfer | Use it for USB peripherals and data devices. Lenovo does not describe this front USB-C port as a display-output connector. |
| USB 3.2 Gen 2 | Always On and fast charge | This is the higher-speed front USB-A port and can provide charging power to supported devices while the PC is configured for Always On operation. |
| 3.5 mm combo jack | Headphone/microphone | A combined analog audio input/output jack for a headset or compatible headphones and microphone. |
These front-panel details are listed in the current Lenovo PSREF product page and the March 19, 2026 specification PDF.
Standard rear-panel ports
| Quantity | Port | Primary use |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | USB 2.0 | Keyboards, mice, printers, and other lower-bandwidth USB devices. |
| 2 | USB 3.2 Gen 1 | Faster external storage and general USB peripherals. |
| 1 | HDMI 1.4b | Digital display output; the supported timings are detailed in the display section. |
| 1 | DisplayPort 1.4 | Digital display output, including the highest listed 4K refresh rate. |
| 1 | Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 | Wired network connection. |
The HDMI and DisplayPort connectors are standard on the rear panel according to Lenovo’s current and December 2025 PSREF material. The presence of those two connectors does not mean every M75q Gen 2 has the same additional display outputs.
Which rear ports are optional?
Lenovo treats the extra rear positions as configuration choices rather than guaranteed features. Depending on the ordered system, the first optional position can be populated with one of several connectors:
- VGA
- A second DisplayPort
- A second HDMI connector
- Serial (RS-232) port
- USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 with DisplayPort function
Lenovo also lists further optional combinations, including a second serial port, additional USB ports, two DisplayPorts occupying the optional positions, or a parallel port. These choices are mutually dependent on the chassis configuration: a machine fitted with VGA will not also have the second DisplayPort in that same position.

| Optional configuration | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| VGA | Allows connection to older analog monitors or projectors; Lenovo lists a separate VGA resolution ceiling. |
| Second DisplayPort | Adds another digital display connector, useful when three independent screens are required. |
| Second HDMI | Adds another HDMI connector, but the exact timing still depends on the HDMI capability listed by Lenovo and the installed graphics implementation. |
| Serial port | Supports legacy industrial, point-of-sale, laboratory, or console equipment. |
| USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 with DisplayPort function | Provides a rear USB-C connection specifically described with DisplayPort capability. This is different from the front USB-C data port. |
| Additional USB, second serial, or parallel port | Uses optional rear space for peripheral or legacy-equipment connectivity instead of another video connector. |
The detailed optional-port list appears in Lenovo’s December 10, 2025 PSREF PDF. If you are buying a used or refurbished unit, ask for a clear photograph of the rear panel or the complete machine type configuration. Do not rely on a generic M75q Gen 2 product photograph.
Important USB-C distinction
The front USB-C port is specified for data transfer. Lenovo specifies DisplayPort function for the optional rear USB-C port, not for the front connector. A USB-C monitor or USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter therefore requires the correctly configured rear USB-C port, or a different output such as the standard rear DisplayPort. A cable cannot add video capability that the installed port does not provide.
How many monitors can it support?
Lenovo specifies up to three independent displays for the M75q Gen 2. The three-display figure uses the onboard DisplayPort and HDMI outputs together with available optional display outputs. It is a platform maximum, not a promise that every chassis has three physical video connectors or that every three-screen combination supports the same resolution and refresh rate.
Lenovo’s listed display limits
| Output type | Maximum listed mode | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DisplayPort | 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz | Highest listed digital-display timing in the current PSREF. |
| HDMI | 3840 × 2160 at 30 Hz, or 2560 × 1440 at 60 Hz | 4K is listed at 30 Hz; 1440p is listed at 60 Hz. |
| VGA | 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz | Applies when the optional VGA output is fitted. |
These figures come from Lenovo’s March 19, 2026 PSREF revision. The table describes the integrated-graphics platform; the exact available outputs depend on the processor and the optional rear-port selection in your individual system.

Planning a three-monitor setup
- Inventory the physical connectors. Confirm that the machine has the standard rear DisplayPort and HDMI, then identify whether the optional position is VGA, a second DisplayPort, a second HDMI, or rear USB-C with DisplayPort function.
- Match each monitor to an output. Prefer direct DisplayPort or HDMI connections where possible. Use an adapter only when its direction and supported timing match both the computer output and monitor input.
- Assign the demanding display to DisplayPort. Lenovo lists 4K at 60 Hz for DisplayPort, while HDMI is listed at 4K at 30 Hz or 1440p at 60 Hz.
- Check the operating system’s display arrangement. After connecting the screens, select the extended-desktop mode rather than mirroring if you need three independent workspaces.
An M75q Gen 2 with only the standard HDMI and DisplayPort connectors cannot physically connect three conventional digital monitors without an additional configured output or a separate display-expansion solution. Lenovo’s three-display statement should therefore be read alongside the rear-port configuration, not as a guarantee that every retail unit is ready for three screens.
Why older specifications may show different numbers
A legacy Lenovo platform-specification document reports different HDMI and optional USB-C/DisplayPort maximums from the current model-specific PSREF. Those documents describe different revisions or configurations. Use the current M75q Gen 2 PSREF for purchase and deployment decisions, and treat older figures as historical references rather than combining the limits into one specification.
The legacy reference is available as Lenovo’s platform-specification PDF. If an existing installation behaves differently from the current table, record the machine type, processor, optional rear ports, monitor model, adapter, resolution, and refresh rate before troubleshooting.
RAM upgrade limits
The M75q Gen 2 has two DDR4 SO-DIMM memory slots and supports dual-channel operation. Lenovo documents up to 64 GB of DDR4-3200 memory across those slots. That 64 GB figure is Lenovo’s tested maximum using its available memory offerings; Lenovo also notes that the platform may support more as memory technology develops. It is best treated as the documented, supportable target rather than an immutable electrical ceiling.

| Memory characteristic | Lenovo specification |
|---|---|
| Slot type | DDR4 SO-DIMM |
| Number of slots | 2 |
| Documented capacity | Up to 64 GB |
| Rated memory | DDR4-3200 |
| Possible operating speeds | 2666, 2933, or 3200 MT/s, depending on processor memory support |
Installing DDR4-3200 modules does not guarantee a 3200 MT/s operating rate. The processor’s memory controller can cause the system to run at 2666 or 2933 MT/s instead. Capacity, module organization, firmware support, and the exact processor all matter, so verify the complete machine configuration before ordering memory.
Practical memory-upgrade checklist
- Record the current configuration. In the operating system or firmware, note the installed capacity, number of modules, and reported speed.
- Confirm the module format. The platform uses laptop-style DDR4 SO-DIMMs, not full-size desktop DIMMs.
- Plan the pair. Two matched modules can enable dual-channel operation; replacing an existing module may be preferable to mixing capacities or specifications.
- Stay within the documented target. Two slots and 64 GB are the Lenovo-tested reference point. Do not assume that an unverified high-capacity module will work simply because its label is DDR4.
- Power down fully before opening the chassis. Disconnect AC power and peripherals, follow Lenovo’s hardware-access procedure for your chassis revision, and avoid touching module contacts.
- Verify after installation. Check that the full capacity is detected and run a memory test before deploying the system for important work.
Storage upgrade limits
Lenovo describes a two-drive arrangement: one 2.5-inch SATA drive and one M.2 SSD. The M.2 slot supports the listed 2242 and 2280 form factors, with PCIe NVMe options identified as PCIe 3.0 x2 for M.2 2242 and PCIe 3.0 x4 for M.2 2280.
| Drive position | Interface and formats listed by Lenovo | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5-inch bay | SATA HDD | Suitable for a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive where the bracket and cable are present. |
| M.2 slot | M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x2 | Requires a shorter 2242 module and the appropriate mounting point. |
| M.2 slot | M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x4 | Accepts the longer 2280 module when the corresponding screw position and clearance are available. |
Lenovo’s capacities are based on tested offerings and do not establish an absolute maximum for every future drive. The PSREF describes platform support; it does not guarantee that every sold unit includes the 2.5-inch bracket, SATA cable, or every mounting screw. Inspect the actual chassis before assuming that a second drive can be installed.

- Use the M.2 NVMe position for a responsive system drive when the machine has the required mounting hardware and the drive’s length matches the available screw location.
- Use the 2.5-inch SATA position for bulk storage when the bracket and cable are installed or can be sourced for the exact chassis.
- Check boot support and cloning requirements before replacing the existing system drive. Back up the original drive and confirm that the replacement is detected in firmware before restoring or cloning an operating system.
- Do not confuse M.2 size with protocol. A 2242 or 2280 label describes physical length; the Lenovo-listed slot is for PCIe NVMe drives, not every possible M.2 SATA device.
Storage-upgrade checklist
- Photograph the inside of the unit or obtain the exact machine type’s parts configuration.
- Confirm whether the 2.5-inch bracket and SATA cable are installed.
- Measure or identify the M.2 mounting position so you order 2242 or 2280, not merely a drive with the wrong length.
- Back up data and record encryption or recovery keys before opening the system.
- Install the drive, enter firmware setup, and verify detection before partitioning or cloning.
- Run a health check and confirm the operating system reports the expected capacity and interface.
What to verify before buying a used or refurbished unit
The model name alone is not enough to determine the connector layout or upgrade readiness. Ask the seller for the machine type/model, processor, installed memory, storage devices, and a rear-panel photograph.

Common mistakes and fixes
“My front USB-C monitor has no signal.”
The front USB-C connector is listed for data transfer, not video. Connect the monitor to the standard rear DisplayPort or HDMI, or verify that the system has the optional rear USB-C port with DisplayPort function.
“I bought a cable for a third monitor, but there is nowhere to plug it in.”
The third display requires an optional rear output or another supported display-expansion method. Compare the actual rear panel with Lenovo’s optional-port list before buying the cable.
“The PC reports 2666 or 2933 MT/s after I installed DDR4-3200.”
That behavior can be normal. Lenovo lists 2666, 2933, and 3200 MT/s depending on processor memory support; the module’s printed rating does not override the processor limit.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“The M.2 drive fits but cannot be secured.”
Check whether the module is 2242 or 2280 and whether the chassis has the matching screw post. Physical fit and electrical support are separate requirements.
“There is no room for the second 2.5-inch drive.”
Some units ship without the bracket or SATA cable. The PSREF’s two-drive platform support does not prove that every individual machine includes those parts, so inspect the chassis and source the correct hardware for its configuration.
Source and revision note
For current specifications, use Lenovo’s ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 PSREF page and its March 19, 2026 revision PDF. The December 10, 2025 PDF supplies the detailed optional-port listing. Lenovo’s older platform-specification document contains legacy figures that should not be merged with the current model-specific limits.
