The Lenovo Legion Go S is a comfortable handheld with a sharp, high-refresh 8-inch screen, but its strengths and drawbacks depend heavily on the configuration. Windows and SteamOS models use different processors and may ship with different memory and storage, so performance results for one version do not predict how another will run. The clearest trade-offs are strong handheld ergonomics and useful connectivity against short battery life in demanding games, audible fans, and a screen that is LCD rather than OLED.

Which Legion Go S are you considering?

“Legion Go S” refers to a family of configurations, not one fixed combination of hardware and software. Lenovo’s 8APU1 specifications, revised May 6, 2026, list Ryzen Z1 Extreme options with Windows 11 Home or SteamOS. A separate Windows configuration reviewed by PCWorld uses the Ryzen Z2 Go, which PCWorld describes as a four-core Zen 3 processor. Review results should therefore be read alongside the tested processor and operating system, not treated as family-wide guarantees.

Configuration or review unit What the source establishes What that means when comparing
Lenovo 8APU1, Ryzen Z1 Extreme Lenovo lists Windows 11 Home and SteamOS options. The family specification allows 16GB or 32GB of soldered LPDDR5X-7500 memory. Lenovo PSREF Confirm the operating system, RAM, and installed SSD on the exact listing; the family specification does not mean every combination is sold in every market.
Windows Z2 Go review unit PCWorld reviewed a Windows 11 model with the Ryzen Z2 Go and reported its own benchmark results for that unit. PCWorld review Do not apply those results to the Z1 Extreme or treat a comparison with a SteamOS model as an operating-system-only test.
SteamOS Z1 Extreme review units Windows Central tested 32GB RAM and a 1TB SSD; it also notes a less expensive Z2 Go / 16GB / 512GB SteamOS configuration. Tom’s Guide’s game and battery figures are for its Z1 Extreme SteamOS unit. Windows Central review Tom’s Guide review These are distinct review configurations. What are the Legion Go S’s main pros?

Comfortable, grippy shape

Windows Central describes the handheld as comfortable to grip, and Tom’s Guide also praises its rounded, grippy design. Those are reviewer impressions, but they point to a practical advantage for longer sessions: the device’s shape is one of its better-regarded features.

Large, sharp, high-refresh LCD

Lenovo specifies an 8-inch, 16:10 IPS multitouch display at 1920×1200, with 48–120Hz variable refresh rate, 500-nit brightness, and 100% sRGB color coverage. It is a high-refresh LCD, not an OLED. PCWorld liked the large, high-resolution IPS panel, while preferring the deeper blacks and more vivid presentation of the Steam Deck OLED; that is a reviewer’s display preference, not a universal ranking. SteamOS offers a console-like handheld experience

On their SteamOS review units, Windows Central and Tom’s Guide found the interface snappy and more console-like. That can make the Go S appealing if your games are mainly in Steam and you want a handheld-focused interface. It does not establish that installing SteamOS on another configuration, or changing operating systems, will reproduce the experience of an officially supplied SteamOS model.

Useful ports and storage expansion

Lenovo lists two USB4 Type-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4 and USB Power Delivery 3.0 support, a microSD card reader, and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. Wireless specifications include Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. A microSD card can add removable storage, while a compatible USB-C/USB4 dock can connect displays and peripherals; verify the dock, cable, monitor, and charging requirements for the particular setup rather than assuming every hub behaves the same way. What are the main drawbacks?

Demanding games can drain the battery quickly

Lenovo specifies a 55.5Wh battery. That capacity does not translate into a fixed gaming runtime: game, power mode, settings, and configuration all matter. Windows Central’s Z1 Extreme SteamOS review unit lasted 1 hour 22 minutes under intensive gaming. Tom’s Guide reported about an hour and a half before a battery warning while running Doom: The Dark Ages at 1200p in 30W performance mode on its Z1 Extreme SteamOS unit. Tom’s Guide also said it could not run its usual battery-test suite on SteamOS, so that game session should not be read as a general battery benchmark. Windows Central review Tom’s Guide review

Lenovo advertises Super Rapid Charge and states that it can charge from 0–30% in 10 minutes and 0–70% in 30 minutes. Those are charging figures under the manufacturer’s stated feature, not estimates of how long the device lasts while gaming. Lenovo PSREF

Fans can be loud

Tom’s Guide describes the fans as loud, including during downloads and installation. If quiet operation matters to you, treat fan noise as a meaningful comfort trade-off rather than assuming it occurs only during gameplay. Tom’s Guide review

SteamOS may not cover every software need

SteamOS can simplify a Steam-centered handheld routine, but Tom’s Guide identifies limitations for people who rely on non-Steam storefronts or Windows-specific software. If those tools or launchers are essential, verify their compatibility with the exact operating system before choosing a model.

The touchpad is small or finicky to some reviewers

Windows Central calls the touchpad finicky, while PCWorld criticizes its small size. If you expect to navigate desktop-style interfaces often, this is worth considering; reviewer assessments do not establish that every owner will find it troublesome. Windows Central review PCWorld review

RAM cannot be upgraded later

Lenovo specifies 16GB or 32GB of soldered LPDDR5X-7500 memory and no memory slots. Choose enough RAM when buying, because the specification does not provide a path to upgrade it afterward. Lenovo lists an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot, while its listed offerings include 512GB or 1TB M.2 2242 SSDs; check the exact SKU rather than assuming every listed drive option comes with every model. How do the tested game results compare?

Tom’s Guide tested its Z1 Extreme SteamOS unit at 1200p and maximum graphical settings. Its reported figures are useful as results for that particular unit and test setup—not as guaranteed frame rates for every Legion Go S.

Game at 1200p, maximum settings Z1 Extreme, SteamOS Z2 Go, Windows 11
Assassin’s Creed Mirage 32 FPS 21 FPS
Dirt 5 32 FPS 20 FPS
Shadow of the Tomb Raider 39 FPS 16 FPS

Because the compared devices differed in processor, memory, and operating system, the table does not isolate SteamOS versus Windows performance. Tom’s Guide’s results are specific to its review conditions. Tom’s Guide review

PCWorld reported a PCMark 10 score of 5,406 and a Cinebench R20 multi-core score of 2,215 for its Windows Z2 Go model. These are scores from named benchmarks on that review unit, not a general performance rating for the whole Legion Go S range. PCWorld also used a repeated 4K Tears of Steel video, airplane mode, and a 250-nit display for its battery procedure; that test should not be compared directly with a demanding-game session. Is the Legion Go S worth it for you?

There is no configuration-independent winner. Compare the exact listing against what you need, especially the processor, operating system, and non-upgradeable memory.

  • Consider a SteamOS model if you primarily play Steam games and value a handheld-oriented interface.
  • Consider a Windows model if Windows-specific software or non-Steam storefronts are important to your routine; confirm that the particular software you need works as expected.
  • Choose RAM deliberately. Lenovo’s listed memory is soldered, so select the capacity you expect to need rather than planning to upgrade later.
  • Set battery expectations around your games. The published intensive-game sessions were short, and they describe specific review units and settings rather than a standardized runtime for every buyer.
  • Compare display priorities. The Go S offers a sharp, high-refresh IPS screen; if OLED contrast is your priority, the LCD panel is a real distinction.
  • Check current local pricing and availability. The cited reviews do not establish a current, region-wide price comparison, and historical prices can go stale.
