Choose the Steam Deck OLED for the more predictable handheld experience; choose the Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS model for higher peak performance and its larger screen. The Go S can be faster when its Ryzen hardware is allowed a higher power limit, but that advantage uses battery quickly. The Steam Deck OLED has Valve’s integrated interface, built-in trackpads and game-by-game compatibility labels. Neither handheld runs every Steam title perfectly: both depend on Proton, and anti-cheat, launchers and individual game updates can change the result.
This comparison separates fixed specifications from review findings and explains how to check a particular game before buying. Lenovo sells more than one Go S configuration, so verify the processor, memory, storage and operating-system option of the exact retail SKU in your region.
Steam Deck OLED or Legion Go S SteamOS: the short answer
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Simple, console-like SteamOS operation | Steam Deck OLED | Valve controls the hardware and software together, with a mature gaming interface, per-game compatibility labels and built-in trackpads. |
| Highest frame rates at a specified high wattage | Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS | Independent testing found SteamOS on the Go S can outperform Windows on the same hardware and can exceed Steam Deck performance in many games. |
| Battery efficiency and low-power play | Usually Steam Deck OLED | The Deck is designed around a lower-power APU and Valve publishes a 3–12-hour gameplay range. Go S performance modes can consume its larger battery quickly. |
| Trackpad-heavy PC games | Steam Deck OLED | It has two 32.5 mm trackpads that can substitute for a mouse in strategy, simulation and desktop-oriented games. |
| Larger viewing area | Legion Go S SteamOS | Lenovo documents an 8-inch-class display in the Go S family, compared with the Deck OLED’s 7.4-inch panel. |
| Guaranteed compatibility with a named game | Neither by default | Check the live Steam Deck compatibility entry, Proton behavior, launcher requirements and anti-cheat support for that individual title. |
Performance comparisons are meaningful only when resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate target and total device power are stated. A result measured at one wattage cannot be used as a universal ranking.

Steam Deck OLED
The Steam Deck OLED is Valve’s fixed hardware-and-software design. Its current specification lists a 6 nm AMD APU with four Zen 2 cores and eight threads, an RDNA 2 GPU with eight compute units, 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory and a 50 Wh battery. The 7.4-inch HDR OLED display runs at up to 90 Hz. Two 32.5 mm trackpads sit below the controls. Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay; actual time depends on the game, brightness, refresh rate, frame limit and power settings.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS
Lenovo documents SteamOS configurations in the Legion Go S family, along with an 8-inch-class display and a 55.5 Wh battery. The documentation and CES announcement cover a model family rather than one universal specification. Processor, memory, SSD capacity, display refresh rate and included operating system can differ by retail SKU, country and release date. Read the model number and PSREF entry for the unit you intend to purchase instead of assuming that every Go S carries the same components.
In practical terms, the Go S is a SteamOS handheld PC with newer, higher-power Ryzen hardware in the configurations tested by reviewers. That gives it more performance headroom, while also making the selected wattage a central part of the buying decision.
Hardware specifications that affect the decision
| Specification | Steam Deck OLED | Legion Go S SteamOS family |
|---|---|---|
| Processor and graphics | 6 nm AMD APU; Zen 2, 4 cores/8 threads; RDNA 2 graphics with 8 compute units | Exact processor varies by SKU; confirm the Lenovo PSREF for the model sold in your region |
| System memory | 16 GB LPDDR5 | Exact capacity varies by SKU; verify before ordering |
| Battery | 50 Wh | 55.5 Wh in Lenovo’s documented model family |
| Display | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, up to 90 Hz | 8-inch-class display; refresh rate and panel specification depend on SKU |
| Pointing controls | Dual 32.5 mm trackpads, thumbsticks, buttons and touchscreen | Thumbsticks, buttons and touchscreen; no Steam Deck-style pair of trackpads is documented |
| Operating system | SteamOS 3 | SteamOS option on documented configurations; confirm the shipped image |
The Go S battery has greater nominal capacity, but watt-hours are not a runtime guarantee. A higher-power processor can consume that extra capacity faster than the Deck’s lower-power design consumes its 50 Wh pack.

Performance: when the Legion Go S is faster
TechSpot reports that SteamOS on the Legion Go S can outperform Windows on identical hardware and can exceed Steam Deck performance in many games. Tom’s Hardware and PC Gamer likewise describe strong performance, while qualifying that the best frame rates come with higher power settings. These findings establish a pattern rather than one universal percentage: the Go S has more peak performance available, but you must spend more watts to obtain it.
Why wattage changes the result
A handheld’s total device power limit, often called TDP or a performance mode, controls how much electrical power the CPU and GPU can use. Raising it can increase clock speeds and frame rates until the game becomes limited by another component. It also increases heat, fan noise and battery drain. Lowering it may reduce peak frames but make a frame-rate cap steadier and extend play time.
The Steam Deck OLED’s hardware and SteamOS defaults are tuned around a compact, lower-power envelope. The Go S gives you a wider performance range, so two reviews of the same model can report different results if one uses a quiet or battery mode and the other uses a high-wattage profile.
How to read benchmark claims
Do not compare a Go S result at a high power limit with a Deck result at its default limit and call the difference a hardware-only advantage. A useful comparison records all of the following:

- International (UK) Version
- 7.4” diagonal, HDR OLED, 1280 x 800 x RGB, up to 90Hz Refresh rate, High performance touch, <0.1 ms Response time, 1,000 nits peak brightness (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)

- Game version and graphics API.
- Screen resolution and upscaling method.
- Graphics preset, texture quality and ray-tracing settings.
- Device power limit, performance mode and fan profile.
- Refresh rate and frame-rate cap.
- Whether the result is an average frame rate, a one-percent low or a subjective description.
For a fair home test, use the same game scene, resolution, preset, frame cap and brightness on both devices. Record the power mode and allow each handheld to reach a stable temperature before comparing.
What the extra performance is useful for
- Demanding 3D games that fall below your target frame rate on the Deck can gain useful headroom on a high-power Go S profile.
- A higher ceiling can let you use a sharper resolution or more demanding preset rather than merely increasing the frame counter.
- Less demanding games may show little benefit because they are already capped by the display, engine or frame-rate limit.
- Running at the Go S’s maximum mode while unplugged is usually a poor trade if your priority is endurance rather than peak frames.
Battery life: capacity is not the same as play time
Valve’s official estimate for Steam Deck OLED is 3–12 hours of gameplay. The range is deliberately broad: a light 2D game at low brightness can use far less power than a demanding 3D game at a high refresh rate. Lenovo publishes a 55.5 Wh battery for the documented Go S family, but independent reviews describe battery life as only adequate when using performance modes.
What drains either handheld fastest
- High device wattage and uncapped frame rates.
- High display brightness and refresh rate.
- Demanding 3D rendering, shader compilation and background downloads.
- Wireless peripherals, external storage and an attached display.
- Running a game launcher or compatibility layer that keeps the CPU active.
A fair battery comparison
To compare the two models yourself, select one game and keep the conditions identical. Fully charge both devices, install the same game build, set the same resolution and preset, choose the same frame cap, match brightness and refresh rate, disconnect unnecessary accessories, and play the same repeatable section. Record the time until the low-battery warning rather than extrapolating from a brief session.
Test light indie play separately from a demanding AAA title. Reporting one number for both categories hides the reason a handheld may last all afternoon in one game and only a few hours in another. The Go S’s larger battery can help when both devices are tuned to similar power, but a high-performance profile can erase that advantage.
Game compatibility: SteamOS is not a guarantee that every Steam game works
Both handhelds use SteamOS and rely on Proton to run many Windows games. Proton translates Windows calls for Linux; it does not make every launcher, DRM system or anti-cheat implementation compatible. Compatibility is therefore a title-by-title question, not a simple property of the Lenovo or Valve logo.
Valve’s four compatibility labels
Valve classifies games in the Steam store and library as:
- Verified: Valve says the game works great on Steam Deck, out of the box.
- Playable: The game runs, but may require a manual setting, an on-screen keyboard, a community layout or another adjustment.
- Unsupported: Valve has identified a significant problem or the title does not currently meet the supported criteria.
- Unknown: Valve has not completed a rating, so the absence of a label is not proof of failure.
The review includes Proton behavior and anti-cheat support. A Verified label is useful evidence for the Deck, but it is not a permanent promise: game patches, Proton updates, launcher changes and anti-cheat updates can alter behavior.

What the label means on the Go S
SteamOS on the Go S uses the same broad Proton model, so a game that works through Proton on the Deck may also work on Lenovo’s hardware. The implementation still has to handle the Go S’s controls, display, firmware and any launcher involved. A Deck rating is a strong starting point, not a substitute for testing the exact title on the Go S.
Anti-cheat is the main risk area
Competitive games that require unsupported kernel-level anti-cheat are the most common compatibility failure. SteamOS cannot load a Windows kernel driver in the same way Windows can. Some developers enable a Linux-compatible anti-cheat configuration; others do not. Before buying for a particular multiplayer game, check its current Steam entry, recent player reports and the developer’s support statement. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that another single-player game runs well.
Launchers, media and controls can cause separate problems
- A game may start but require a third-party launcher whose login window is awkward without a mouse.
- Manual keyboard input may be necessary for an installer, launcher or first-run video setting.
- A title can render correctly but lack a suitable gamepad layout; the Deck’s trackpads can make these cases easier to manage.
- Mods, external overlays and older Windows utilities may need additional Proton configuration.
Controls, screen and everyday usability
Steam Deck OLED’s control advantage
The Deck’s two 32.5 mm trackpads are its clearest differentiator. They provide mouse-like pointing, scrolling and radial or capacitive inputs for strategy games, management sims, role-playing games with cursor-driven menus and desktop tasks. Steam Input also lets you assign buttons, trackpads and gyro controls per game. If your library contains many mouse-first titles, this can matter more than a modest frame-rate difference.
Legion Go S’s display advantage
The Go S family uses an 8-inch-class panel, giving the game image more physical area than the Deck OLED’s 7.4-inch display. The exact refresh rate and panel characteristics depend on the SKU. A larger screen can improve readability in dense interfaces and provide more comfortable viewing at a fixed resolution, but it does not by itself increase rendering performance.
Weight the controls against your library
For controller-native action games, racing games and platformers, both devices provide the expected handheld controls. For games that repeatedly ask for pointer precision, the Deck’s trackpads reduce friction. For games where a larger image and higher peak frame rate are more valuable, the Go S’s display and performance headroom may be the better trade.

Both platforms support microSD expansion, making a UHS-I microSDXC card a practical way to add a second game library. Install performance can vary with card quality, and large modern games still benefit from the internal SSD. Check the exact internal capacity of the Go S SKU; do not assume that a family-level specification applies to every retailer’s listing.
A USB-C dock with DisplayPort and Power Delivery can connect either handheld to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse and network accessories. Verify the dock’s charging wattage, video output standard and port layout. A dock that supplies insufficient power may limit performance or charge slowly during play. External-display behavior also depends on the game’s resolution settings and the handheld’s power budget.
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
First-time setup and a reliable compatibility check
Set up the Steam Deck OLED
- Connect the supplied charger, turn on the Deck and complete SteamOS updates.
- Sign in to Steam and let the device finish firmware and controller updates before installing a large game.
- Open your Library and read the compatibility label and notes for each game you plan to play.
- For a Playable or Unknown title, install it before a trip and test its opening, save/load flow, controls and any online mode.
- Use the per-game performance menu to set a frame cap, refresh rate and, where appropriate, a lower power limit.
Set up the Legion Go S SteamOS model
- Confirm the exact Lenovo model number, SteamOS image, processor, memory and SSD capacity on the box or system information screen.
- Connect power and apply SteamOS, firmware and controller updates before judging performance.
- Install one representative game rather than your entire library, then test its launcher, controls and online features.
- Start with a moderate power profile and a frame cap. Increase wattage only if the game needs additional performance.
- Record the settings that work so an update or profile change does not unexpectedly alter battery life or frame pacing.
Check a must-play game before purchase
- Open the game’s current Steam store or library entry and note its Deck label.
- Read the label’s details for text input, launcher steps, video playback and controller issues.
- Search the game’s current support notes for anti-cheat requirements and Linux or Proton changes.
- Check whether your intended mode is online competitive play, because that is where unsupported anti-cheat is most likely to block access.
- If the title is Unknown or Unsupported, treat it as a purchase risk rather than assuming a future Proton update will fix it.
Common problems and practical fixes
The game launches but controls are wrong
Choose a community or official Steam Input layout, then test mouse, keyboard and controller bindings separately. On the Deck, assign pointer movement to a trackpad when a game expects a mouse. On the Go S, keep a compact keyboard or mouse available for launchers and configuration screens.
Frame rate is unstable
Apply a frame cap that the game can sustain, lower the refresh rate if the display allows it, and reduce the power limit only after the cap is stable. If the Go S still cannot hold the target, raise its wattage in small steps and watch temperature and battery drain. On the Deck, reducing shadows, volumetric effects and resolution scaling often produces a steadier result than leaving every setting on a high preset.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →An online game refuses to connect
Check the game’s anti-cheat status and recent developer notes first. Reinstalling Proton cannot make an unsupported kernel-level anti-cheat driver load. If the developer does support Linux, try the recommended Proton version and remove unofficial launch options before testing again.
A launcher or installer is unusable
Use the touchscreen or connect a mouse and keyboard, complete the first-run login, and then return to the game’s controller profile. Keep the launcher installed on the internal SSD if it performs poorly from removable storage. A game can be technically compatible while still requiring this one-time desktop-style setup.
Which one should you buy?
Choose Steam Deck OLED when
- You want the most predictable, console-like SteamOS workflow.
- Your library includes strategy, simulation or older PC games that benefit from trackpads.
- You value Valve’s compatibility labels and a lower-power tuning approach.
- You prefer a known, fixed specification rather than comparing several retail SKUs.
Choose Legion Go S SteamOS when
- You are willing to run a higher-wattage profile for higher peak frame rates.
- An 8-inch-class display is more important to you than the Deck’s trackpads.
- You understand that battery life is only adequate at performance settings and plan to tune power per game.
- You have checked the exact processor, RAM, SSD, display and SteamOS configuration available in your region.
Do not choose either solely by a compatibility label
If one or two games determine the purchase, investigate those games first. Confirm their current Proton behavior, anti-cheat support, launcher requirements and control layout. Compatibility changes with patches, so recheck the live Steam entry immediately before buying and again after a major game update.
Bottom line
Steam Deck OLED remains the safer all-round SteamOS handheld: its integrated software, trackpads, compatibility labeling and efficient tuning make daily use predictable. Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS is the performance-oriented alternative. It can deliver higher frame rates when given more power and offers a larger display, but the cost is shorter endurance at those settings and greater dependence on the exact retail SKU. Treat both as SteamOS handheld PCs, not universal replacements for a Windows gaming computer, and decide on the games you actually play rather than on peak benchmark numbers alone.
