The Lenovo Legion Go S is an 8-inch Windows or SteamOS handheld gaming PC. Its defining choices are the AMD processor, soldered 16GB or 32GB memory, a replaceable M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, and an 8-inch 1920×1200 display with variable refresh up to 120Hz. Choose memory and processor carefully at purchase: RAM cannot be upgraded later, while the internal SSD can be replaced if you use the required 2242 format.

Lenovo announced the Legion Go S at CES 2025 in several configurations. The Windows editions target buyers who want a general-purpose PC and broad launcher compatibility; the officially licensed SteamOS edition is focused on Steam games, cloud saves and Remote Play. Battery, display and port specifications are broadly shared, but processor, memory speed, operating system and storage capacities vary by model.

What the Lenovo Legion Go S is

The Legion Go S is an 8-inch handheld computer built around AMD’s Ryzen Z-series processors. It has a 16:10 WUXGA touchscreen, integrated graphics, LPDDR5X or LPDDR5 memory soldered to the motherboard, one internal M.2 2242 NVMe slot and a microSD card reader. Lenovo offers both Windows 11 Home and SteamOS configurations, so the operating system is a purchase decision rather than a later software download.

It is best understood as a portable PC that can also serve as a small desktop when connected to a compatible USB-C dock, charger and display. The two USB4 ports support high-speed accessories and external monitors, while the removable microSD card provides extra game or media storage without opening the chassis.

Ryzen Z2 Go versus Ryzen Z1 Extreme

The processor choice is the largest performance distinction. The Ryzen Z2 Go configuration in Lenovo’s 8ARP1 specification has four cores and eight threads. Listed memory options are LPDDR5-6400 or LPDDR5X-6400, depending on the exact configuration. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme version in the 8APU1 specification doubles the CPU resources to eight cores and 16 threads and uses LPDDR5X-7500 memory.

Core count alone does not predict game performance: handheld results also depend on the configured power limit, cooling, game engine, resolution and graphics settings. However, the Z1 Extreme gives more CPU threads for demanding games, emulation, background tasks and desktop workloads. The Z2 Go can make sense when its lower launch price or a particular bundle matters more than maximum processing headroom.

Check the complete model number and configuration before buying. Two Legion Go S units can have the same screen and battery while differing in processor, memory speed, operating system and SSD capacity.

Windows 11 Home or SteamOS?

Lenovo sells the Legion Go S with either Windows 11 Home or SteamOS. The hardware does not turn both editions into identical software experiences.

Consideration Windows 11 Home SteamOS
Primary use General-purpose PC plus gaming Console-like Steam gaming environment
Game launchers Most Windows-compatible PC launchers and stores can be installed, subject to each publisher’s requirements Steam is the native focus; support for other launchers varies and may require workarounds
Non-gaming software Broad Windows application compatibility Desktop Linux environment; Windows-only applications may not run or may need compatibility tools
Steam features Steam client can be installed normally Lenovo describes the model as officially licensed SteamOS with full Steam Store and Steam Library access
Cloud and streaming Depends on the individual service or application Lenovo specifically cites cloud saves and Remote Play

Choose Windows if you need applications such as Windows productivity software, several PC game stores, third-party utilities or peripherals whose support is Windows-specific. Choose SteamOS if most of your library is on Steam and you prefer a controller-oriented interface with Steam’s integrated library, cloud saves and Remote Play. Do not assume every launcher, anti-cheat system or subscription service has identical support on SteamOS; compatibility is decided by the individual game and its supporting software.

Memory and storage upgrade options

RAM is not upgradeable

Both the 8ARP1 Ryzen Z2 Go and 8APU1 Ryzen Z1 Extreme specifications identify the memory as soldered. There are no SO-DIMM or other user-accessible memory slots, and Lenovo marks the 16GB and 32GB options as not upgradable.

Because the integrated graphics share system memory, capacity affects more than multitasking. A 16GB model may be adequate for lighter gaming and ordinary handheld use, while 32GB provides more room for demanding games, texture-heavy settings, emulation, browsers and background applications. Select the capacity at purchase; replacing the SSD will not increase RAM.

The internal SSD can be replaced

The Legion Go S has one M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe slot. Lenovo lists 512GB and 1TB configurations. A replacement drive must be an NVMe SSD in the shorter 2242 length and use the supported PCIe interface; a common M.2 2280 desktop or laptop drive is physically too long.

Transfer files at blazing 40Gbps speeds or boost performance with eGPU compatibility for desktop-level gaming. Whatever your setup, Legion Go S adapts for the ultimate versatility.

Lenovo’s listed configurations establish support for up to 1TB in those models. Before buying a larger or unusual drive, confirm the exact machine’s service documentation, drive thickness and thermal-clearance requirements. A physically compatible SSD can still cause problems if it is too thick, lacks suitable firmware support or is installed without preserving the operating system and recovery data.

microSD expansion

The built-in microSD reader is the simplest capacity upgrade. It adds removable storage for games, recordings and media without opening the handheld. It is convenient for a large library, but internal NVMe storage is generally the better location for applications and games that need the fastest, most consistent loading. Keep important saves backed up rather than treating a removable card as the only copy.

How to replace the Legion Go S SSD

SSD replacement is a hardware service operation. The exact screw locations, cable routing and recovery procedure can differ by model, so use Lenovo’s service documentation for your specific machine rather than relying on a generic handheld teardown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up your data. Copy game saves, documents and any files that are not synchronized to cloud storage. If you are moving from Windows to a replacement drive, create or download the correct recovery media before removing the original SSD.
  2. Shut down completely. Power off the Legion Go S, disconnect the charger and remove every accessory and microSD card. Do not work on a sleeping or hibernating system.
  3. Use an M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive. Confirm the length, interface and physical clearance against the model’s service information. Do not force a 2280 drive into the slot.
  4. Open the chassis according to the service guide. Use the specified screwdriver, keep screws organized by location and avoid prying against display, battery or button cables.
  5. Disconnect power if the service procedure requires it. The battery is internal; follow Lenovo’s documented safety sequence before touching the SSD.
  6. Remove the retaining screw and old SSD. Lift the module only after it is released from the connector. Transfer any required thermal material only when the service instructions call for it.
  7. Install the replacement at an angle. Insert it fully into the M.2 connector, lower it flat and secure it with the original retaining hardware. Never bend the board or overtighten the screw.
  8. Reassemble and restore software. Close the chassis, reconnect the charger and boot from the appropriate recovery or installation media. Restore your backup, apply operating-system updates and verify that the full capacity is recognized.

If the system does not detect the new drive, power it down and check seating, the retaining screw, drive format and whether the replacement is actually an NVMe 2242 module. If the drive is detected but the system will not boot, reinstall the correct operating system or restore the manufacturer’s recovery image.

Display and handheld use

The 8ARP1 display is an 8-inch IPS panel at 1920×1200 resolution in a 16:10 aspect ratio. Lenovo rates it at 500 nits, 100% sRGB and a 48–120Hz variable refresh range. The 120Hz ceiling can make menus and supported games feel smoother, while variable refresh helps match the panel to changing frame rates. Higher refresh settings can consume more power, so a lower cap may be sensible for long sessions.

The 16:10 shape provides more vertical pixels than a 16:9 1920×1080 panel, which is useful for desktop windows and some games. Older titles may display black bars or require an in-game resolution adjustment. Brightness, color coverage and refresh range are specifications, not guarantees of a particular frame rate; the processor and game settings determine that.

Battery life and charging behavior

The Legion Go S uses a 55.5Wh three-cell battery. Lenovo quotes Super Rapid Charge from 0–30% in 10 minutes, 0–70% in 30 minutes and 0–100% in 80 minutes. Those figures describe charging targets under Lenovo’s stated conditions, not a promise that every charger, cable, temperature or workload will produce the same result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lenovo’s PSREF lists maximum local-video figures of 15.4 hours for the 8ARP1 and 14.5 hours for the 8APU1. These are laboratory or benchmark claims for local video playback, not gaming-runtime estimates. A modern 3D game at high brightness and a high refresh rate can draw substantially more power. Expect battery behavior to vary with processor, frame-rate limit, display brightness, wireless activity and power mode.

USB4 ports, external displays and desk use

There are two USB-C USB4 ports rated up to 40Gbps. Lenovo lists DisplayPort 1.4 output and USB Power Delivery from 65W to 100W. This combination can support compatible docks, external monitors, wired networking, storage and charging accessories.

Lenovo lists a 65W USB-C adapter option. A dock or charger should provide the wattage required by the handheld and negotiate USB Power Delivery correctly; a lower-power phone charger may charge slowly, fail to charge during gaming or allow the battery to drain while connected. Video output also depends on the dock, cable and monitor supporting the required DisplayPort mode.

Launch pricing and availability

At CES 2025, Lenovo announced expected US starting prices of $729.99 for the initial Windows model, $599.99 for additional Windows configurations and $499.99 for the SteamOS model. Lenovo associated availability with January or May 2025, depending on the configuration. These were launch expectations, not permanent prices. Current retail pricing, promotions, regional taxes, stock and included accessories can differ substantially, so check the exact configuration and seller at the time of purchase.

Which Legion Go S configuration should you choose?

Choose the processor first

Select the Ryzen Z1 Extreme when you want the higher core and thread count, expect demanding games or emulation, or plan to use the handheld as a compact PC. Consider the Ryzen Z2 Go when your games are less demanding and the lower-priced configuration is more important than maximum headroom.

Choose memory before storage

Because RAM is soldered, decide between 16GB and 32GB before ordering. Storage can be replaced later, but memory cannot. If you regularly keep a browser, launcher, voice chat and game open together, or use memory-heavy mods and emulators, 32GB offers more margin.

Match the operating system to your library

Windows is the safer choice for mixed launchers, Windows applications and peripherals with Windows-only utilities. SteamOS is attractive for a Steam-centered library and a streamlined handheld interface, but verify compatibility for every important game and launcher before choosing it.

Plan storage expansion realistically

A 512GB internal drive can fill quickly once several large games are installed. A 1TB configuration reduces immediate pressure. If you buy 512GB, budget for either a compatible M.2 2242 replacement or a quality microSD card, understanding that the internal slot is the main high-speed upgrade path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Buying the wrong SSD length: the internal slot is M.2 2242, not the longer 2280 format commonly sold for laptops.
  • Assuming RAM can be added: 16GB and 32GB memory are soldered and have no expansion slots.
  • Treating video-playback battery figures as gaming results: Lenovo’s 14.5-hour and 15.4-hour claims are maximum local-video figures under stated test conditions.
  • Expecting every launcher to work the same on SteamOS: Steam access is integrated, but other stores, anti-cheat systems and Windows-only software vary.
  • Using an underpowered charger: USB-C charging depends on Power Delivery negotiation and available wattage; a low-power adapter may not sustain gaming.
  • Opening the chassis without a backup: SSD replacement can require operating-system recovery, and an installation mistake can leave the handheld unable to boot.
