First identify your exact Lenovo model: there is no method that starts every Lenovo laptop without its power button. On some IdeaPads, the Novo button can open a boot menu; keyboard or mouse input may wake a laptop that is asleep, but that is different from starting one that is fully shut down. An emergency-reset hole resets a system—it is not a substitute power switch.
Identify your Lenovo model before trying a pinhole
Find the model name or machine type on the laptop’s label or in its documentation, then open the matching user guide on Lenovo Support. Check the guide’s diagrams and instructions before pressing any recessed control. Novo buttons and emergency-reset holes are not present on every Lenovo laptop, and a pinhole should not be assumed to be either one.
Can the Novo button turn on a Lenovo laptop?
On some IdeaPads, yes—in a limited sense. Lenovo describes Novo as a small button or pinhole, often marked with a curved or backward-arrow-like icon and located near the power button or along a side. For a model that has Novo, Lenovo says to press it gently with an unfolded paper clip or similar pointed object. Verify the mark and location in your exact user guide before using a tool.

This is a model-specific route to a boot menu, not a guaranteed way to start Windows normally, and it cannot fix a failed motherboard or power circuit. Choose the step that matches the laptop’s state
| Route | When it may help | What it does | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novo button | Some IdeaPads with Novo | Enters a boot or recovery menu; the supported boot procedure can enter Boot mode. | Model-specific; not a universal power-button replacement. |
| Emergency-reset hole | Supported models in Lenovo’s no-power troubleshooting sequence | Resets the system before you reconnect AC power and try starting it. | Not available on every model and does not itself perform a normal startup. |
| Keyboard or mouse | The laptop is asleep or hibernating and wake input is enabled | May wake the computer. | Some configurations respond only to a specific key; this does not establish a way to cold-boot after shutdown. |
| Lenovo Support or repair | The switch seems faulty or the laptop remains without power | Provides model-specific diagnosis and repair guidance. | Confirm the correct part and service eligibility for your exact model. |
If the laptop is asleep, try waking it
Move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard. Lenovo notes that the wake behavior can depend on the computer’s ACPI configuration; some systems respond only to a specific wake key. This works only if the laptop is in a supported sleep or hibernate state and wake input is enabled. A fully shut-down laptop needs a startup method, not a wake event.
Use an emergency-reset hole only as a reset step
Lenovo’s no-power guidance says that, on systems with an internal battery and an emergency-reset hole, you should disconnect the power adapter and use the hole to reset the system, then reconnect power and attempt startup. Some models have no reset hole; consult the product manual rather than probing an unidentified opening. The reset may clear a stuck power state, but Lenovo’s procedure does not describe the hole as a replacement power button.

Reset instructions vary by model. For example, the 2025 ThinkPad P1/T1g guide describes an emergency-reset hole where provided and, for models without one, a reset sequence involving a roughly seven-second power-button hold; another troubleshooting sequence describes a 30-second residual-power drain. Those steps still require the power button or a later startup attempt. Do not transfer those timings to another Lenovo model; follow its own guide. See the 2025 ThinkPad P1/T1g guide.

Check power before arranging service
- Connect the Lenovo adapter directly to a working wall outlet, rather than a power strip, and allow a discharged laptop to charge for several minutes.
- Disconnect peripherals, then check the model’s guide for any battery-reset procedure or supported emergency-reset or Novo control.
- After the model-specific steps, try starting the laptop with its normal power control. If it still shows no signs of power, or the button appears faulty, contact Lenovo Support. Lenovo’s no-power guidance says that if a reset works, there may be a power-button issue and you should contact Support.
Do not replace the switch or open the case based on a generic guide
Repairability depends on the exact model and part. In the ThinkPad Z13/Z16 guide, Lenovo says parts not listed as customer-replaceable—including the built-in battery—must be handled by a Lenovo-authorized repair facility or technician. That instruction is specific to those models; check your own support page and service manual before buying a replacement switch or opening the laptop. See Lenovo’s ThinkPad Z13/Z16 customer-replaceable unit guidance.
