Sometimes—but not on every Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14. Lenovo uses the IdeaPad 5 14 name for several generations and regional configurations. The 14ARE05 specification lists no backlight support, while the 14ITL05 and 14ALC05 documentation lists both backlit and non-backlit keyboard options. You need the complete model or machine-type code to know what a particular laptop has.
Why the name “IdeaPad 5 14” is not enough
“IdeaPad 5 14” identifies a family of 14-inch laptops, not one fixed keyboard design. Lenovo released different generations and sold multiple configurations within at least two of those generations. Keyboard illumination is one of the features that can change between configurations, along with language and layout.
That is why two laptops advertised with the same broad name can look similar but have different keyboards. A listing that says only “Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14” does not establish whether the keyboard has LEDs. The generation suffix—such as 14ARE05, 14ITL05 or 14ALC05—and the full product or machine-type number are the useful identifiers.
Lenovo also states in its Product Specifications Reference (PSREF) documentation that it reserves the right to change specifications or other product information without notice. Treat a family-level answer as a starting point; confirm the exact unit before buying or replacing a keyboard.

What “backlit keyboard” means here
A backlit keyboard has lighting built into the keyboard assembly so the keys can be seen in low light. The relevant Lenovo specification is the Keyboard Backlight field, not a mention of LEDs elsewhere in a retailer description. A listing may mention an LED display, status light, or power indicator without saying anything about illuminated keys.
“Backlit” and “non-backlit” are also separate from keyboard language and layout. Lenovo lists different language and layout variants for the IdeaPad 5 14 family. A keyboard can therefore have the layout you want but no illumination, or be illuminated while using a layout intended for another market.
The term “14” refers to screen size and does not identify a keyboard assembly. It cannot tell you the connector, mounting points, printed legends, language, or backlight option. Those details must be tied to the complete machine identifier.
What Lenovo’s specifications show for each 14-inch generation
| Model family | Keyboard information in Lenovo documentation | What that means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| IdeaPad 5 14ARE05 | The PSREF entry describes a six-row multimedia Fn-key keyboard and shows “LED backlight” with “No support” under Keyboard Backlight. The page was last modified 11 October 2021. | The cited specification indicates that the listed 14ARE05 configuration does not support a backlit keyboard. Do not apply that result automatically to other IdeaPad 5 14 generations. |
| IdeaPad 5 14ITL05 | Lenovo documentation includes both LED-backlight and non-backlit keyboard possibilities. A PSREF PDF is dated 17 April 2023. | The 14ITL05 name alone cannot tell you whether a specific laptop is illuminated. The individual configuration must be checked. |
| IdeaPad 5 14ALC05 | The product PSREF lists backlit and non-backlit choices, with multiple language and layout entries. Lenovo marks the product page withdrawn. | Availability and keyboard type can vary by market and configuration. Verify the exact listing or the physical unit, especially for used or old stock. |
IdeaPad 5 14ARE05: the specification indicates no backlight support
The 14ARE05 page is the clearest case. Its keyboard section describes a six-row multimedia keyboard with Fn keys and presents “LED backlight” alongside “No support.” In context, “No support” is the relevant capability entry for that model page, so a 14ARE05 sold under that specification should not be expected to have an illuminated keyboard.
This is a model-page result, not proof that every laptop ever advertised with an IdeaPad 5 14 label is identical. If a seller calls a machine “14ARE05” but claims it has a backlit keyboard, ask for the complete type or part number and a photograph of the keyboard before relying on the claim.
Do not assume that changing software settings can add the feature. If the matching PSREF says the configuration has no backlight support, a function-key setting cannot turn that hardware into a factory-backlit keyboard. Any physical replacement would require compatibility evidence for the exact machine, not just its 14-inch screen size.
IdeaPad 5 14ITL05: both keyboard types exist
Lenovo’s 14ITL05 material lists configurations with LED backlighting as well as configurations without it. Consequently, “14ITL05” narrows the search to a generation but still does not settle the question. Two retail listings can use the same generation name while differing in keyboard option, language, or regional part number.
Recommended Free Tools
When comparing 14ITL05 listings, require the seller to identify the exact configuration rather than copying a generic family description. If the listing does not explicitly state “backlit” or show a clear image of the relevant keyboard, regard the feature as unconfirmed.

The PSREF PDF is dated 17 April 2023, but a document date does not make every unit sold under that family name identical. Use the date to identify the document you consulted, then match its type and part information to the laptop or listing.
IdeaPad 5 14ALC05: backlit and non-backlit choices, with a withdrawn page
The 14ALC05 PSREF also records both backlit and non-backlit keyboards. Its entries include multiple language and layout variants, so keyboard illumination and the printed key arrangement are separate questions. A laptop can have the preferred language layout without being backlit, or be backlit while using a layout unfamiliar to the buyer.
Lenovo marks the 14ALC05 product page withdrawn. That status does not change the specifications recorded for the model, but it does mean current availability may depend on remaining inventory or the used market. Inspect the exact unit and documentation instead of assuming that every 14ALC05 listing uses the same option.
For a withdrawn model, preserve the listing, label, and matching PSREF details together. This is especially important when a seller has old stock from more than one region or combines photographs from several configurations.
How to identify the exact keyboard in your laptop
Use the following process for an existing machine, a second-hand purchase, or a new listing. The objective is to match the physical laptop to Lenovo’s configuration record, not merely to recognize the IdeaPad logo.
- Record the complete identifier. Look on the device label, original packaging, purchase record, or service documentation for the full product name, machine type/model, and product or part number. A suffix such as 14ARE05 is useful, but the longer identifier is more reliable when several configurations share a generation.
- Use Lenovo’s support lookup. Enter the identifier in Lenovo Support and open the documentation or specifications that match that exact machine. If several results appear, compare the type and part number rather than selecting the first page with “IdeaPad 5 14” in its title.
- Read the Keyboard Backlight field. In the matching PSREF, look specifically for the keyboard-backlight entry. “LED backlight” indicates an illuminated option; “No support” indicates that the listed configuration does not support it. Do not infer the answer from a processor name, screen size, or a stock photograph.
- Check the seller’s configuration text. For a new or used purchase, ask the seller to state the exact model code and whether the keyboard is backlit. The listing should identify the option directly, not rely on “IdeaPad 5 14” as shorthand.
- Compare the physical keyboard as a secondary check. A clear photograph can reveal whether the keyboard has the expected lighting controls or indicator markings, but a photograph may be reused from another configuration. Use it to detect inconsistencies, then resolve those inconsistencies with the model identifier and specification.
- Keep the evidence with the purchase record. Save a screenshot or copy of the configuration description and the part number. This helps if a delivered laptop differs from the listing or if you later need a compatible replacement part.
Where to find the identifier
On an existing laptop, inspect the underside label or the original box for the machine type and product number. The purchase invoice, order confirmation, or service paperwork may provide the same information. If the label is worn, Lenovo Support’s lookup and the documentation supplied with the computer are more dependable than a retailer’s shortened title.
Record every character, including letters, digits, and hyphens. A small difference in a type or part number can represent a different keyboard option or language. Do not substitute a serial number for a product or machine-type identifier when the PSREF search requires the latter; use the identifier Lenovo requests and confirm that the result describes the same physical unit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to compare when two listings look similar
| Comparison point | Why it matters | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Complete model, type, or part number | The family name covers multiple generations and configurations. | A full identifier from the label, invoice, or Lenovo lookup. |
| Backlight description | Backlit and non-backlit keyboards can both be sold within a generation. | An explicit “backlit” or “LED-backlit” statement tied to the exact configuration. |
| Keyboard language and layout | Lenovo lists different language/layout variants, particularly for the 14ALC05 documentation. | The printed layout and the market or region in which the unit was sold. |
| Seller region and configuration | Options may differ between markets, and old or withdrawn models can remain in circulation. | The country of sale, original part number, and a photograph of the actual keyboard. |
| Documentation date | Specifications and listings can be revised, and Lenovo warns that information may change without notice. | The matching PSREF or support document, with its revision or publication date. |
Do not treat a backlight icon in a product photograph as conclusive if the image is a generic marketing image. The identifier and the configuration record should control the decision; the photograph is useful for spotting a mismatch, not for replacing the specification check.

How to tell whether a used laptop’s claim is credible
Used listings often compress several details into a short title. Before paying a premium for a backlit keyboard, request three pieces of evidence: a photograph of the actual keyboard with the laptop powered on, the full model or part number from the machine label, and the seller’s written confirmation that the pictured unit is the one being sold.
Compare those details with Lenovo’s matching PSREF. A 14ARE05 specification that says “No support” should make you question a claimed factory backlight. Conversely, a 14ITL05 or 14ALC05 can legitimately be either type, so the absence of a backlight in one photograph does not prove that every unit in that generation lacks it.
Also check the layout before purchase. A backlit keyboard with a different language arrangement may be less useful than a non-backlit keyboard with the layout you need. Replacement keycaps and keyboard assemblies are not automatically interchangeable across generations or layouts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ask whether the photograph was taken with the laptop powered on and whether the seller can show the underside label in the same transaction. These checks do not replace Lenovo’s specification, but they reduce the chance that a generic image or an incorrectly identified machine is being used.
Operating instructions: why there is no single family-wide shortcut
Lenovo’s support listing includes a User Guide for the IdeaPad 5 14IIL05 and 14ARE05 family dated 12 October 2020. That documentation is appropriate for those generations, but the available evidence does not establish one keyboard-light shortcut that works across the entire IdeaPad 5 14 family.
For operating instructions, open the guide for the exact generation and machine type. If the PSREF says the configuration is non-backlit, changing a function-key setting will not create illumination. If the machine is documented as backlit but the light does not appear, use the exact guide and support documentation for that unit rather than applying a shortcut from a different IdeaPad model.
- Confirm the machine identifier before following a guide.
- Use the guide’s keyboard-control instructions for that generation.
- Check whether the specification actually lists a backlit option.
- If the documented control has no effect on a machine specified as backlit, contact Lenovo Support or the seller with the full product number.
Do not conclude that a keyboard is defective merely because a shortcut learned from another Lenovo model does nothing. First establish that the installed keyboard is the backlit option and that the guide applies to that exact generation.

Confusing “LED” elsewhere in a listing with keyboard lighting
Retail descriptions can mention LEDs for the display, status indicators, or other components. Only a keyboard-backlight entry tied to the exact configuration answers this question.
Using a generic review as proof for an individual unit
A review may describe one sample while a retailer sells several configurations. Treat broad reviews as background and verify the model code on the machine you will receive.
Ignoring withdrawn or old product pages
A withdrawn 14ALC05 page can still document a real configuration, but it does not guarantee that a current seller has that option. Confirm the actual inventory and condition.
Ordering a replacement keyboard by screen size alone
Fourteen-inch size does not establish connector, mounting, language, or backlight compatibility. Match the replacement to the complete machine type and keyboard part information; do not assume that an IdeaPad 5 14 keyboard fits every model in the family.
Assuming a missing light proves the keyboard is non-backlit
A dark photograph may show a laptop with its backlight switched off, a unit that is not powered, or a non-backlit option. Confirm the specification and ask for a powered-on photograph before drawing a conclusion.
Assuming the same generation means the same layout
The 14ALC05 documentation includes multiple language and layout entries. Check the printed legends and the seller’s region as carefully as the lighting claim.

Buying a new listing
Ask the seller to provide the exact product or part number and to state “backlit” in writing if that feature is required. A broad family title, processor name, or stock photograph is not enough. Save the listing and its configuration details before ordering, since Lenovo notes that product information can change without notice.

Replacing a damaged keyboard
Do not order solely by “IdeaPad 5 14.” The replacement must match the complete machine type, keyboard layout, mounting and connector details, and whether the original configuration supports backlighting. The official specifications establish variation within the family but do not prove that any particular replacement assembly fits your machine.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down the complete machine type, model, and part number.
- Identify the generation: 14ARE05, 14ITL05, 14ALC05, or another exact code.
- Find the corresponding Lenovo PSREF or support document.
- Read the Keyboard Backlight entry instead of relying on the family name.
- Confirm the language and physical layout you need.
- Ask the seller whether the stated specification applies to the actual unit.
- For used stock, compare the label, keyboard photograph, and documentation.
- Keep a copy of the listing and identifier in case the delivered configuration differs.
- For a replacement, match the keyboard part information and connector before ordering.
Verdict
The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14 does not have one universal keyboard specification. Lenovo’s 14ARE05 documentation indicates no backlight support, while 14ITL05 and 14ALC05 documentation records both backlit and non-backlit configurations. The reliable answer for any individual laptop comes from its complete model or part number and the matching Lenovo specification—not from the words “IdeaPad 5 14” alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14 have a backlit keyboard?
No. The family includes different generations and configurations. Lenovo’s 14ARE05 specification indicates no backlight support, while 14ITL05 and 14ALC05 documentation lists both backlit and non-backlit options.
Is the IdeaPad 5 14ARE05 backlit?
The cited Lenovo PSREF for 14ARE05 shows “No support” in the Keyboard Backlight field. Verify the complete type or part number if a seller makes a conflicting claim.
Is the IdeaPad 5 14ITL05 backlit?
It can be. Lenovo documents both LED-backlit and non-backlit 14ITL05 configurations, so the generation name alone is not sufficient.
Is the IdeaPad 5 14ALC05 backlit?
Some 14ALC05 configurations are backlit and others are not. Lenovo also lists multiple language and layout variants and marks the product page withdrawn, so check the exact unit.
How do I know whether my IdeaPad 5 keyboard is backlit?
Find the complete machine type, model, or product number on the laptop, packaging, invoice, or support record. Match it to Lenovo’s PSREF and read the Keyboard Backlight entry. A clear photograph of the actual keyboard is a useful secondary check.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a keyboard shortcut add backlighting to a non-backlit IdeaPad 5 14?
No. If the matching specification says “No support,” software settings cannot add the missing hardware. Use the guide for the exact generation only after confirming that the installed configuration is backlit.
Does a 14-inch IdeaPad 5 replacement keyboard fit every IdeaPad 5 14?
No. Screen size does not establish connector, mounting, language, layout, or backlight compatibility. Match the replacement to the complete machine and keyboard part information.
What should I ask a used-laptop seller?
Ask for the full model or part number, a photograph of the actual keyboard powered on, the keyboard language/layout, and written confirmation that the pictured unit is the one being sold. Compare those details with Lenovo’s matching specification.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14 backlighting is configuration-specific. Treat 14ARE05 as non-backlit according to its PSREF, while checking the exact part number for 14ITL05 and 14ALC05 because both backlit and non-backlit versions exist.
