To set up Lemon Emulator on Android, use an Android 12 or newer arm64 phone or tablet—preferably one with an Adreno GPU—then complete Lemon’s first-run cards for prod.keys, Switch firmware, and your games folder. Lemon does not provide keys or firmware, so you must dump them from a console you own. Touch controls work immediately; a controller is optional.
What Lemon Emulator is and whether your device is suitable
Lemon is an Android-only Nintendo Switch emulator. Its production support is centered on arm64 Android devices with Qualcomm Adreno graphics. The project README places Mali and PowerVR graphics paths outside its normal production scope, so a phone with either GPU family is not an equivalent target.
The APK release requirements list Android 12 or newer and the arm64 application binary interface (ABI). Check both items before troubleshooting installation: a recent Android version does not compensate for a 32-bit-only device, and a compatible ABI does not guarantee useful graphics support.

| Requirement or capability | What Lemon’s published materials establish | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Android 12 or newer for the listed APK builds | Devices below Android 12 do not meet the stated APK requirement. |
| CPU/ABI | arm64 | Install the arm64 APK on a 64-bit ARM device. |
| Preferred GPU family | Adreno | This is the main production target described by the project. |
| Mali or PowerVR | Production paths are out of scope in the README | Expect limited or version-specific support rather than the same behavior as Adreno. |
| Selected Mali support | v1.1.0 Lite builds add experimental PanVK drivers for selected Mali GPUs | Experimental does not mean universal; results depend on the exact GPU, driver, game, and build. |
| Touchscreen | Supported | You can begin without buying any hardware. |
| Physical controller | Supported through navigation, layouts, and hotkeys | Optional, but useful for games designed around a gamepad. |
Do not treat these requirements as a promise that every Switch title will run correctly. Lemon publishes title- and device-specific fixes and known issues, and compatibility can change between builds and graphics drivers.

Prepare the files Lemon does not include
Your own keys and firmware
Lemon does not ship Nintendo Switch decryption keys or system firmware. The project README states: “No keys, no firmware. prod.keys and Switch firmware are not part of this repository and never will be — sourcing them from your own legally owned console is entirely on you.”
Dump prod.keys and firmware from hardware you legally own, and follow the law that applies where you live. Do not download these files from unofficial sites. Lemon also says it does not perform key derivation, decryption, or DRM handling for you; the emulator expects the required material to have been obtained and prepared separately.
Organize the files before opening the wizard
Keep your keys, firmware dump, and game dumps in locations you can select with Android’s file picker. The exact directory names are not important to Lemon’s setup flow; selecting the correct file or folder in the wizard is. Avoid renaming files merely to make them look like an example path, and keep a backup of your original dumps before moving them.

- Verify the device. Confirm Android 12 or newer, arm64 support, and—if possible—an Adreno GPU. If the device misses one of these requirements, resolve that before investigating keys or game files.
- Install the APK. Use the arm64 APK that matches the Lemon release you selected. Android may ask you to allow installation from the source you used; enable that permission only for a source you trust, then disable it again if you do not need it.
- Open Lemon and start the setup cards. The wizard presents separate entries for keys, firmware, the games folder, and other setup items. Follow the on-screen picker rather than guessing a path.
- Complete the keys card. Select your legally dumped
prod.keysfile when prompted. If Lemon reports that keys are missing, return to this card and choose the actual file, not the folder containing it. - Complete the firmware card. Select the firmware location or package requested by the wizard. Firmware is separate from
prod.keys; supplying one does not satisfy the other. - Choose the games folder. Point Lemon at the folder containing your legally obtained Switch dumps. A folder is preferable to repeatedly selecting individual games because the library can scan it and find additions later.
- Finish the recap. Review the paths shown on the final step and let the library scan. If a path is wrong, finish the wizard and correct it from Settings rather than reinstalling the application.
- Test one title first. Launch a single game before importing a large library. This isolates a key, firmware, driver, or title-specific problem and makes troubleshooting faster.
You can reopen Settings after setup if you move the files or decide to use a different games directory. Repoint the relevant item, rescan, and test again.
Keys and firmware: what each one does
Why prod.keys is required
The key file supplies information Lemon needs to recognize and process encrypted Switch content. Lemon does not derive or distribute those keys. A correctly named file in the wrong location is still unusable, so use the wizard or Settings picker to select the file explicitly.
Why firmware is separate
Firmware provides console-system components that are distinct from encryption keys. Lemon documents firmware-dependent behavior, including a “Start in QLaunch” feature that works with firmware installed. Release notes also describe loading games built for newer Switch firmware formats, so a title can require a newer firmware generation than another title in the same library.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If a game asks for newer system support, do not assume that replacing prod.keys will help. Check the firmware installation first, then confirm that the game’s requirements match the firmware dump you selected.

Game files and formats Lemon documents
The games-folder card is the central way to build your library. Place your dumps in the selected folder, let Lemon scan it, and keep the folder available when you add or remove titles. The published materials specifically document compressed containers; they do not promise that every Switch file variant or every title will work.
| Format or feature | Documented behavior | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
.nsz |
Direct loading of compressed NSZ containers | Lemon can open the compressed container from the scanned games folder. |
.xcz |
Direct loading of compressed XCZ containers | Lemon can scan and load this compressed container type. |
| Solid NSZ | May be decompressed once and cached | The first use can involve a one-time preparation step; subsequent launches may use the cached result. |
| ZBIC | Supported for games built for Switch firmware 22.0 and newer | Titles using that newer compressed executable format still depend on suitable firmware and device support. |
| Other extensions | Not established by the published setup notes | Do not assume support solely because another emulator opens the file. |
Compression support is not the same as universal compatibility. Lemon’s release notes include device- and title-specific fixes and known issues; one v1.0.0 example is an incorrect face-color display in FIFA 23. A game that appears in the library can still have graphics glitches, crashes, missing effects, or a firmware dependency.
Import saves, keys, and firmware from another emulator
If Eden, Citron, yuzu, or another yuzu-based emulator is already installed, Lemon can use an import workflow rather than making you locate every file manually. The import appears during first-run setup and at the top of Settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the import option in the setup wizard or Settings.
- Choose the installed emulator and the categories to import.
- Allow Lemon to import saves. When Lemon does not already have the required material, it can also import keys and firmware.
- When Lemon finds an existing save for the same game, choose whether to replace it or keep the Lemon copy.
- If you replace a save, Lemon backs up the previous save first. Keep that backup until you have launched the imported game and verified progress.
Importing does not make an illegally obtained game or key dump lawful, and it does not guarantee that a save created by one build will behave identically in another. Test one imported title before converting your entire library.

Controls: touchscreen first, controller when you want it
A touchscreen is enough to start a game and complete setup. Lemon also supports full controller navigation, on-screen control presets, per-game layouts, and gamepad hotkeys. Those features let you keep a general layout while adjusting controls for a particular title.
An Android-compatible game controller is therefore an optional accessory, not a requirement. Bluetooth and USB-C controllers can work, but compatibility depends on the phone or tablet, its Android version, the controller, and the connection method. Pair or connect the controller before launching a game, then check Lemon’s control settings and create a per-game layout if the default mapping is uncomfortable.
- Use the touchscreen for short sessions, menus, or testing whether a title launches.
- Use a physical controller for games that rely on analog movement, shoulder buttons, or precise timing.
- Save a per-game layout when one title needs a different button arrangement.
- Use hotkeys only after confirming which buttons Lemon assigns on your device.
Drivers and graphics settings are device-specific
Lemon includes an Adreno driver manager and supports selecting a driver per game. The README and older release notes describe automatic fallback behavior on certain Adreno hardware, including bundled Lemon-Ade support. Driver behavior is version- and device-dependent, so there is no single driver recommendation that applies to every phone.
When a game fails after an update, record the Lemon version, device GPU, selected driver, and title before changing several settings. Try the driver already recommended or bundled for that device, then test the game again. Per-game selection is safer than changing a global driver when only one title is affected.

For Mali hardware, v1.1.0 Lite builds list experimental PanVK drivers for selected GPUs. Treat this as an experiment: a Lite build may start where a standard build does not, but neither the driver nor the build guarantees broad Mali compatibility. PowerVR support remains outside the production scope described by the README.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose among Lemon’s APK variants
The v1.1.0 release lists standard, Lite, and Lite & Spoofed APKs. The release page states Android 12+ and arm64 for these APK builds. Select the variant that matches the release notes and your device rather than assuming that a larger or newer-looking package is automatically better.
| Variant | Published description | Decision guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Regular Lemon build | Start here when your device fits the normal Android and GPU target. |
| Lite | Uses lighter defaults; can import keys, firmware, games, and saves from Lemon | Consider it when the standard build’s defaults are too demanding or when you need the Lite-specific import path. |
| Lite & Spoofed | Listed as a separate Lite variant in v1.1.0 | Use only when the release notes or your troubleshooting plan specifically calls for it; do not infer behavior that the release page does not document. |
Updates and preserving your setup
Lemon checks its own update server when it launches, falls back to a GitHub mirror if necessary, and offers a manual check from About. The v1.0.0 notes say updates are signed and update the installation in place while retaining data.
- Launch Lemon and let the automatic check complete.
- If no prompt appears, open About and run the manual update check.
- Install only a package that matches your device’s Android and arm64 requirements.
- After updating, confirm that your keys, firmware, games folder, saves, and controller layout are still visible.
- Test one previously working game before changing drivers or importing files again.
Release requirements can change. Recheck the Android version, ABI, GPU notes, and variant name whenever you move to a new release line.
Troubleshoot the problems people hit most often
The APK will not install
- Check that the device runs Android 12 or newer.
- Confirm that it is an arm64 device and that you selected the arm64 APK.
- If the device uses Mali or PowerVR graphics, recognize that it is outside Lemon’s normal production target; a different package may not solve the underlying limitation.
- Remove an incomplete download and obtain the package again from the project’s official release channel.
Lemon says keys are missing
- Return to the keys card or the corresponding Settings entry.
- Select the actual
prod.keysfile, not merely its parent folder. - Verify that the file came from your own legally owned console and was not altered during transfer.
- If you migrated from another emulator, use Lemon’s import option and then confirm the imported location in Settings.
Firmware-dependent games or QLaunch do not work
- Confirm that firmware was installed separately from keys.
- Check whether the game was built for a newer Switch firmware generation.
- For firmware 22.0+ titles using ZBIC, make sure the selected firmware and Lemon build are appropriate for that format.
A game is not listed
- Open the games-folder setting and verify the selected folder contains the dump itself.
- Run the library scan again after moving or adding files.
- Check whether the file is an
.nszor.xczcontainer documented by Lemon, and remember that other extensions are not established by these release notes. - Do not assume that a file failing to scan is fixed by changing graphics drivers; scanning and rendering are separate problems.
A title launches with visual errors or crashes
- Test the title with the recommended or bundled driver for your hardware.
- Use per-game driver selection instead of changing the global setting for every title.
- Check Lemon’s title-specific fixes and known issues for the release you installed.
- Keep expectations realistic: the published FIFA 23 face-color issue demonstrates that a game can run while still having a known rendering defect.
An imported save is missing or the wrong version appears
- Repeat the import from the top of Settings.
- When prompted about an existing Lemon save, choose the intended replace-or-keep option carefully.
- Keep the automatic backup until the imported save has been tested in-game.
The controller is connected but inputs are wrong
- Confirm Android sees the Bluetooth or USB-C controller before opening Lemon.
- Open Lemon’s controller settings and verify the assigned buttons.
- Create a per-game layout when only one title has unusual controls.
- If the controller still fails, test the touchscreen to separate a controller connection issue from a game or driver issue.
How to evaluate Lemon against another Android Switch emulator
A universal performance score would be misleading because the official Lemon materials do not publish a general compatibility percentage or benchmark. Compare emulators using the conditions that actually affect your device and library.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| GPU families | Does the project target your Adreno, Mali, or PowerVR GPU, and are any drivers explicitly experimental? |
| Minimum platform | Is Android 12+ required, and is an arm64 APK available? |
| Keys, firmware, and saves | Can you import from an existing yuzu-based installation, and are existing saves backed up before replacement? |
| Game containers | Are the formats in your legally obtained library supported directly, including compressed containers? |
| Controller configuration | Are navigation, on-screen presets, per-game layouts, and hotkeys available? |
| Driver management | Can you select a driver per game, and does the project document fallback behavior for your hardware? |
| Update channel | Are updates signed, delivered in place, and available through both an application check and a mirror? |
| Title compatibility | Does the project list fixes or known issues for the exact games you intend to play? |
This method produces a device-specific decision instead of an invented ranking. The same title can behave differently on two phones with different GPUs, drivers, Android builds, or firmware selections.
