Lehigh University researchers have fabricated and assembled a 150 kWh thermal-battery prototype that stores heat in an engineered cementitious matrix and moves heat through embedded finned thermosiphons. Lehigh reports round-trip efficiency above 70%. The design can accept server waste heat or electricity, then deliver higher-temperature heat for absorption cooling, district heating, drying, industrial processes and, in some configurations, power generation.

The often-repeated “150 kW” figure is incorrect for storage capacity: 150 kWh measures the amount of thermal energy the reported prototype can hold, while kW would describe a power rate. The prototype is a research demonstration, not evidence that a commercial data center is already being cooled by a deployed unit.

What Lehigh’s concrete thermal battery is

This is a sensible thermal-energy-storage system, meaning it stores energy as a change in the temperature of a solid medium rather than in an electrochemical cell. The storage medium is an engineered cementitious matrix. Finned thermosiphons embedded in that matrix transfer heat into the material during charging and back out during discharge while maintaining near-isothermal heat transfer, according to Lehigh University’s 2026 technical description.

It is not ordinary construction concrete poured around a server rack. The matrix, thermosiphon geometry and operating temperatures are engineered as one modular heat-storage assembly. That distinction matters because heat-transfer performance, cycling durability and the interfaces to a data center would determine whether the concept works economically at larger scale.

How the system could use data-center waste heat

Two ways to charge it

  1. Recover server heat: Heat rejected by computing equipment can be routed into the thermosiphons and stored in the cementitious matrix when it is available.
  2. Use electricity: Electrical input can charge the system when power is cheaper or more available, giving operators another way to prepare heat for later use.

Those routes let storage separate the timing of heat production from the timing of heat demand. Computing loads can change rapidly, while useful heat or cooling may be needed on a different schedule. A stored-heat system can therefore absorb energy during one operating period and discharge it later instead of requiring every heat source and heat load to match continuously.

What happens during discharge

During discharge, the thermosiphons carry heat out of the matrix to equipment that can use it. Lehigh identifies absorption refrigeration chillers for data-center cooling, along with district-heating networks, drying and industrial-process heat. The university also describes feeding low-temperature Organic Rankine Cycle equipment for electricity generation where the temperatures and system design are suitable.

What the reported prototype has demonstrated

Reported characteristic Lehigh’s stated result How to interpret it
Thermal-storage capacity 150 kWh Energy stored by the fabricated and assembled prototype setup
Round-trip efficiency More than 70% Lehigh’s reported efficiency for a complete charge-and-discharge cycle
Heat-upgrading range for data-center uses 120°C to 220°C Temperature range presented as suitable for absorption chillers and other thermal uses
Upper operating temperature for selected applications Up to 500°C A broader technology target associated with power-generation flexibility, decarbonization and concentrated solar power
Charging modes Server waste heat and electricity Two stated ways to put energy into the storage system
Federal support identified by Lehigh U.S. Department of Energy award DE-FE0031755 Lehigh says the work was partly funded through this award

The 500°C figure should not be read as the temperature of every data-center cooling loop. Lehigh links that upper limit to selected applications beyond the specific 120°C–220°C range presented for upgrading data-center heat. In practice, a project would need heat exchangers, controls and end-use equipment rated for its chosen temperature.

Can it cool an AI data center?

Potentially, but the public evidence supports a heat-recovery pathway rather than a completed commercial cooling installation. The stated data-center use is to upgrade recovered heat into the range needed by absorption refrigeration chillers. Those chillers would then have to be integrated with the facility’s cooling-water, controls and heat-rejection systems.

Lehigh’s public account describes a 150 kWh prototype that was fabricated and assembled. It does not report a full-scale data-center deployment, a number of cooled facilities, annual operating data or a procurement-ready system. TechRadar’s report dated 14 October 2026 repeats the prototype capacity, greater-than-70% complete-cycle efficiency, two charging routes, thermosiphon design and the 120°C–220°C data-center range, but it likewise does not establish commercial deployment.

Why storing heat could matter at data-center scale

Cooling demand does not always match heat availability

Servers produce heat whenever they run, but the most useful time to consume that heat may differ from the time it is generated. Storage can buffer those mismatches, allowing recovered heat to be held and dispatched when a chiller, district-heating network or industrial process needs it.

Electricity becomes another operating lever

Because the system can also be electrically charged, an operator could use available grid power to prepare thermal capacity before a period of higher cooling demand. The concept is therefore not limited to whatever waste heat happens to be produced at the moment of discharge.

Heat can serve more than one load

The same stored energy could be directed toward absorption cooling, heating, drying or industrial use, subject to the temperatures and equipment installed at the site. Low-temperature Organic Rankine Cycle equipment is another stated pathway for converting suitable stored heat into electricity.

What is still unknown

  • The public descriptions do not provide a purchase price, levelized cost, footprint, discharge-power rating or commercial warranty.
  • They do not publish a deployment count, long-term cycling record or a data-center demonstration at full operating scale.
  • A 150 kWh capacity does not by itself specify how quickly the system can charge or discharge; that requires a power rating and site-specific heat-exchanger design.
  • Round-trip efficiency above 70% is a reported prototype result, not a guarantee for every temperature, cycle length or integrated data-center installation.

These gaps are important for project planning. A facility would need engineering data on thermal losses, response time, allowable cycling, maintenance, controls, safety and integration costs before sizing a commercial installation.

Is the thermal battery available to buy?

Lehigh says the technology is under license from Lehigh University to Energy Storage Technologies, Inc. No public pricing, retail product page, deployment count or consumer SKU is identified in the university account. The realistic commercial route today is a B2B licensing or partnership discussion, with availability and project scope requiring direct verification with the licensee and Lehigh.

Why the 150 kWh wording matters

Storage stories often confuse power and energy. kWh is the quantity of thermal energy stored; kW is the rate at which energy can be delivered or absorbed. The university’s technical description uses 150 kWh for the prototype capacity. Without a separate kW rating, readers cannot infer how fast that 150 kWh can cool equipment, heat a process or generate electricity.

Lehigh’s stated objective

“Lehigh researchers have developed a concrete thermal battery that captures the waste heat from AI data centers and puts it back to work, easing pressure on local power grids and the environment as demand for digital services grows.”

Lehigh University, 2026

The concept is therefore best understood as an industrial heat-storage platform: a validated 150 kWh prototype with a reported round-trip efficiency above 70%, a stated 120°C–220°C data-center heat-upgrading range and a broader operating target up to 500°C. Whether it becomes a practical data-center product will depend on the next stage of integration, cycling and commercial demonstration.
