Choose the LEGO Technic Peugeot 9X8 42156 if you want a compact 1:10 endurance-racing model inspired by the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a represented hybrid system and glow-in-the-dark elements. Choose the Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 if you want the larger 1:8 display car, more than twice as many pieces, and a V12 with an eight-speed sequential gearbox. Both carry LEGO’s 18+ label and both are marked retired, so the practical decision also depends on the condition, completeness, seller and regional price of the listing you find.

LEGO Technic Peugeot 9X8 vs. Ferrari Daytona SP3: the short answer

These are not two versions of the same subject. Set 42156 represents a Le Mans endurance hypercar at 1:10 scale, while set 42143 recreates a Ferrari road supercar at 1:8 scale. The Peugeot is the more manageable choice when display space, endurance-racing identity or a lower piece count matters most. The Ferrari is the better fit when the project itself should be a major display centerpiece and you specifically want a moving-piston V12, a working sequential transmission and Ferrari’s road-car styling.

LEGO lists both products as retired. That means the official pages are useful for identifying specifications, but they should not be treated as guarantees of current stock or a universal market price. For a purchase today, match the exact set number, confirm what is included and compare the seller’s terms in your country.

What the Peugeot 9X8 42156 is designed to deliver

An endurance-racing subject rather than a road-car showcase

The Peugeot model commemorates the 24 Hours of Le Mans centenary. Its identity comes from long-distance prototype racing, so the shape, livery and engineering story are aimed at readers who follow endurance competition or want something different from a conventional supercar.

A represented hybrid power system

LEGO describes a hybrid system represented by a V6 engine and an electric motor. This is a display-scale interpretation, not a functioning vehicle powertrain, but it gives the build a clear mechanical theme: internal-combustion components and electric assistance are both represented in the model.

Suspension, steering and access features

The set includes specially designed suspension, steering and opening doors. These features make the Peugeot more than a static shell: you can demonstrate the steering and suspension and open the doors to inspect the interior and mechanical layout.

Glow-in-the-dark elements

Glow-in-the-dark elements are one of the Peugeot’s distinctive visual details. They favor a display environment where the model can be viewed under changing light, and they separate this set from a purely mechanical replica.

What the Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 is designed to deliver

A larger Ultimate Car Concept display model

The Ferrari is a 1:8 model in LEGO Technic’s Ultimate Car Concept series. Its road-supercar subject and larger scale make it the more imposing display option of the two, provided you have a stable surface with enough depth for the finished car.

Moving-piston V12

Inside the Ferrari is a V12 representation with moving pistons. For builders who enjoy seeing an engine mechanism operate as the car is moved or inspected, this is a more prominent feature than the Peugeot’s V6-and-electric-motor representation.

Eight-speed sequential gearbox and paddle shifter

The Ferrari includes a working eight-speed sequential gearbox operated by a paddle shifter. That gives the drivetrain a specific interaction point: the paddles let you cycle through the modeled gears rather than merely viewing a fixed transmission.

Bodywork and removable components

Steering, butterfly doors, a removable roof and shock absorbers are included. The doors and roof make the cabin easier to present, while the shock absorbers and steering add functional chassis details beneath the bodywork.

This table describes the functions LEGO lists for each product. It does not claim that one mechanism is objectively more reliable, more enjoyable or easier to assemble; no independent comparative testing is established for these sets.

Scale, size and display planning

Why the scale difference matters

At 1:8 scale, the Ferrari represents a larger fraction of the real car than the Peugeot’s 1:10 model. The published dimensions reflect that choice: the Ferrari is over 59 cm long and 25 cm wide, while the Peugeot is 50 cm long and 22 cm wide. Both are substantial display models, but the Ferrari needs the deeper shelf or table.

Putting the dimensions side by side

The Ferrari is 9 cm longer and 3 cm wider than the Peugeot on LEGO’s published measurements. Its stated height is also about 1 cm greater. Those differences may sound modest, but a 59 cm model can span most of a shelf, and the extra width affects glass cases, display plinths and the space needed to turn the model without catching bodywork. Treat 50 by 22 cm as the Peugeot’s minimum footprint and 59 by 25 cm as the Ferrari’s minimum footprint, then leave additional hand clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Height and handling

LEGO gives the Ferrari’s height as over 14 cm and the Peugeot’s as over 13 cm. Height alone is not a storage plan: allow clearance for handling, for opening the Ferrari’s butterfly doors and for removing its roof, or for opening the Peugeot’s doors. Measure the actual shelf and the path you will use to move the completed model before buying.

Piece count as a project commitment

The Peugeot has 1,775 pieces. The Ferrari has 3,778, more than double the Peugeot’s count. The difference is 2,003 pieces, so the Ferrari represents a substantially longer parts-sorting and assembly commitment in absolute terms. Piece count is a useful way to estimate the relative scope of the project, but LEGO does not provide a comparable official build-time figure for either set. Do not use the counts as a promised number of hours.

Which set should different buyers choose?

Choose the Peugeot for endurance-racing fans

Pick 42156 when the story behind the car matters as much as the mechanics. The Le Mans connection, hybrid-system representation and glow-in-the-dark details give it a distinct identity that the Ferrari cannot replicate. It is also the smaller model by the published dimensions and the lower-commitment project by piece count.

Choose the Ferrari for a centerpiece display

Pick 42143 when the finished car should dominate a display area. Its 1:8 scale, 3,778 pieces, V12, sequential gearbox and open-body features create a broader mechanical and presentation brief. This is the stronger match for someone who specifically wants the Ferrari Daytona SP3 subject rather than an endurance prototype.

Choose by mechanism, not by an assumed difficulty rating

If you care about drivetrain interaction, the Ferrari’s moving pistons and paddle-operated gearbox are the decisive features. If you care about seeing a hybrid concept represented in a racing car, the Peugeot is the relevant choice. Neither official listing supplies a difficulty score or an objective statement that one build is easier.

Choose by available display space

Use the published footprints as a hard constraint. The Ferrari’s greater length and width can affect shelving, glass cases and transport between rooms. The Peugeot remains large enough to require deliberate placement, but its smaller footprint is more forgiving when space is limited.

Retired status, prices and current listings

What “retired” changes

LEGO’s current regional product pages mark both 42156 and 42143 as retired. Retired status means new inventory may be uneven across countries and that listings can differ in whether they offer a sealed box, a used build, loose parts or an incomplete set. It also means a price shown on one regional page should not be read as the current value of every listing.

Displayed regional prices are not like-for-like market quotes

At the time of access, the US Ferrari page displayed $449.99, while the French Peugeot page displayed €199.99. These figures come from different regional pages and currencies, and they are not a valid direct comparison of current resale prices. Taxes, shipping, exchange rates, seller condition and local availability can all change what you actually pay.

Historical Ferrari launch timing

The LEGO Group announced the Ferrari on May 24, 2022. The announcement said it would be available through LEGO Stores from June 1, 2022, and through many retailers from August 1, 2022. Those dates describe the original launch schedule, not present-day stock.

What to verify before paying

  1. Confirm the exact number: Peugeot 9X8 is 42156; Ferrari Daytona SP3 is 42143.
  2. Ask whether the listing is sealed, opened but complete, assembled, or sold as loose parts.
  3. Request a clear inventory statement and confirm that the building instructions and any listed accessories are included.
  4. Check photographs for crushed packaging, dust, discoloration, missing panels or altered parts when condition matters to you.
  5. Compare shipping cost, delivery protection, return rights and the seller’s reputation in your region.
  6. For a used model, establish whether it has been dismantled and sorted; an assembled display car can hide missing internal pieces.

These checks matter more for a retired set than a simple “in stock” label because two listings with the same set number can represent very different purchases.

What the official specifications do—and do not—tell you

Established facts

  • Both sets carry an 18+ LEGO age label.
  • The Peugeot has 1,775 pieces at 1:10 scale.
  • The Ferrari has 3,778 pieces at 1:8 scale.
  • LEGO publishes finished-model dimensions for both products.
  • LEGO identifies both products as retired on the cited regional listings.

Information not established by those listings

  • There is no comparable official build-time estimate.
  • There is no independent head-to-head difficulty score.
  • There is no owner survey establishing which model is more enjoyable.
  • The listings do not establish current third-party stock or resale value.
  • Published dimensions do not prove how stable a completed model will be during transport or long-term display.

Treat the specifications as a way to match subject, scale, mechanisms and footprint to your priorities—not as a promise about the experience of every builder or seller.

Design provenance and launch context

The Ferrari announcement presents the model as a collaboration between the LEGO Group and Ferrari. LEGO Group CEO Niels B. Christiansen called it “a testament to the pursuit of excellence that lies at the core of the Ferrari and LEGO Group ethos.” Ferrari Chief Design Officer Flavio Manzoni described the project as “a stunning replica of our limited-edition Daytona SP3 supercar.” These statements explain the set’s premium, display-oriented positioning, but they do not constitute an independent assessment of build quality or value.

The same announcement dates the Ferrari’s original LEGO Store release to June 1, 2022, with many retailers following on August 1, 2022. A current buyer should use those dates only as historical context. A listing today may be new old stock, a previously opened set or a secondary-market assembly, and each category warrants a different price and inspection standard.

A practical decision framework

Step 1: Pick the car’s identity

Write down whether your main interest is a Le Mans endurance hypercar or a Ferrari road supercar. If the answer is endurance racing, start with 42156. If it is Ferrari styling and the Daytona SP3, start with 42143.

Step 2: Set your space limit

Measure the intended display surface. A Ferrari listing should provide room for a model over 59 cm long and 25 cm wide; a Peugeot listing should provide room for one 50 cm long and 22 cm wide. Include hand clearance for opening doors and inspecting mechanisms.

Step 3: Decide which functions you will demonstrate

Choose the Peugeot for its hybrid-system representation, suspension, steering, doors and luminous elements. Choose the Ferrari for the moving-piston V12, paddle-operated eight-speed gearbox, steering, butterfly doors, removable roof and shock absorbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Set a retired-set buying rule

Decide in advance whether you require a sealed box, a complete used set or simply a parts-complete project. Then compare listings using the same standard for completeness, condition, shipping and returns instead of choosing solely on a displayed price.

Step 5: Match the display to the interaction

If you plan to demonstrate the model, leave room to turn the Peugeot’s steering, open its doors or show its suspension. For the Ferrari, plan access to the paddle shifter, butterfly doors and removable roof. A display that leaves these features unreachable will hide much of what distinguishes each set.

Final recommendation

The Peugeot 9X8 42156 is the right choice for a buyer who values Le Mans heritage, a 1:10 footprint, a modeled hybrid system and glow-in-the-dark presentation. The Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 is the right choice for a buyer who wants the larger 1:8 display car, substantially more pieces and a more elaborate road-car drivetrain centered on a V12 and sequential gearbox. Because both are retired, the best final decision is the set whose subject and mechanisms fit you—and whose specific listing is complete, authentic and fairly documented.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which LEGO Technic car should I buy: Peugeot 9X8 or Ferrari Daytona SP3?

Buy the Peugeot 9X8 42156 for Le Mans identity, a 1:10 footprint, hybrid-system representation and glow-in-the-dark elements. Buy the Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 for a larger 1:8 model, 3,778 pieces, a moving-piston V12 and a paddle-operated eight-speed gearbox.

How big is the LEGO Ferrari Daytona SP3?

LEGO lists the completed Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 at over 14 cm high, 59 cm long and 25 cm wide. Leave extra clearance for the butterfly doors, removable roof and handling.

How big is the LEGO Peugeot 9X8?

LEGO lists the Peugeot 9X8 42156 at over 13 cm high, 50 cm long and 22 cm wide. Its smaller footprint is useful when shelf depth is limited, though it is still a substantial adult display model.

Which set has more pieces?

The Ferrari Daytona SP3 has 3,778 pieces, while the Peugeot 9X8 has 1,775. That is a difference of 2,003 pieces. The count indicates relative project scope, not a guaranteed build time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are LEGO Technic sets 42156 and 42143 retired?

Yes. The cited LEGO regional product pages mark both sets as retired. Current availability therefore depends on regional stock and secondary-market listings, including whether a set is sealed, complete or used.

Does the Peugeot 9X8 have a real working hybrid motor?

No. LEGO describes a represented hybrid system consisting of a V6 engine and an electric motor. It is a display-scale mechanical interpretation rather than a functioning vehicle powertrain.

Does the Ferrari Daytona SP3 gearbox actually shift?

LEGO lists a working eight-speed sequential gearbox operated by a paddle shifter. The model also includes a V12 representation with moving pistons, steering, butterfly doors, a removable roof and shock absorbers.

What should I check when buying either retired set?

Confirm the exact set number, ask whether it is sealed or complete, verify instructions and included parts, inspect photos for damage or discoloration, and compare shipping, returns and seller reputation. For an assembled used model, ask whether it was dismantled and sorted because hidden internal pieces may be missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose Peugeot 9X8 42156 for Le Mans, hybrid-themed mechanics and a smaller display footprint. Choose Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 for the larger 1:8 centerpiece, 3,778-piece project and V12/8-speed drivetrain. Since LEGO marks both retired, judge the exact listing’s completeness, condition, seller terms and regional total cost before paying.
