How large are the two models in a real display?
Rivendell needs width and depth
Rivendell measures over 39 cm high, 72 cm wide and 50 cm deep. Its width is the critical figure: a nominal 72-centimeter shelf leaves no room at all for side clearance, hands or dusting tools. A cabinet shelf should be wider than the model, and a table should leave access around the front and sides. The 50-centimeter depth also rules out many shallow bookcases.
The model’s horizontal layout reflects its subject. The sections spread out as a tower, the Council ring and a gazebo area with a river and bridge. That gives the eye several scenes to inspect from the front, but it also means the model occupies a large rectangle rather than a narrow tower footprint.
Barad-dûr needs height clearance
Barad-dûr measures over 83 cm high, 45 cm wide and 30 cm deep. Check the clear distance from the shelf surface to the next shelf, cabinet ceiling or light fitting; an 83-centimeter opening is only the stated model height, not a handling allowance. A tall display can also be awkward to place if a shelf has a front lip or if you must tilt the completed model through a doorway.
Its 45-by-30-centimeter footprint is easier to accommodate on a narrow shelf than Rivendell’s, but the height can eliminate enclosed cabinets and standard bookcase compartments. Measure the opening, not just the shelf board, and account for the space needed to reach the gate and lighting controls.
A practical measuring checklist
- Measure usable shelf width, depth and clear height at the exact location where the model will stand.
- Compare those measurements with the manufacturer’s dimensions: 72 × 50 × over 39 cm for Rivendell, or 45 × 30 × over 83 cm for Barad-dûr.
- Add working room for lifting, turning, dusting and viewing. This is practical planning advice, not an additional LEGO requirement.
- Check the route from your building area to the display location, including doorways and stair turns.
- Confirm that the shelf can support a large, completed LEGO display without flexing.

The bridge and river provide a transition between the architectural areas and the Fellowship crossing the bridge supplies an immediate story moment. If you want a display that rewards looking across several locations, Rivendell is the more scene-oriented choice.

Barad-dûr’s four-section fortress
Barad-dûr is divided into four main sections, including a fully modular tower section. The design emphasizes a single fortress rising upward, with rooms such as a forge, throne room and prison inside. The modular tower is useful when you need to access or reposition parts of the structure, but the finished presentation remains a tall, narrow silhouette.
Its signature play-and-display elements are the automated black gate and an illuminated Eye of Sauron. Those mechanisms and the light feature give Barad-dûr a more active visual presence than a static facade. The Eye’s illumination will be most effective where the display can be seen in lower ambient light, while the gate needs enough front clearance to operate and view.

Why Barad-dûr appeals to Mordor and Sauron fans
Barad-dûr includes 10 minifigures and concentrates its storytelling around the fortress. Choose it when the visual identity of Sauron’s stronghold matters more than having the largest group of characters.
Because the two sets portray different locations, counting minifigures is not a substitute for deciding which scene you want on your shelf. Rivendell offers more figures and a wider ensemble; Barad-dûr offers a smaller cast framed by a much more imposing structure.
Price and what the difference means

Choose Rivendell when these statements are true
