Display LEGO PlayStation set 72306 on a stable shelf or desk away from direct sunlight, radiators, vents and heat-producing lamps. The console measures over 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide, 7.5 inches (19 cm) deep and 2.5 inches (6 cm) high, so plan for that footprint before choosing furniture or a case. Add clearance for the controller and for the Gran Turismo and Ape Escape dioramas if you want the complete arrangement together.

A clear enclosure is useful when dust, pets or frequent handling are concerns, but it is not a license to place the model in bright sun. UV-filtering glazing can reduce ultraviolet exposure; it does not stop cumulative damage from visible light, and lights inside a case can create damaging heat. LEGO’s Play and Display Case 5006157 should not be used for the console: its listed 5.5-inch depth is smaller than the model’s 7.5-inch depth.

What you need to plan for

Set 72306 is an adult-oriented, 1,911-piece model of the original PlayStation console and controller. The finished console has functional-looking Open and Power buttons, and LEGO supplies Gran Turismo and Ape Escape dioramas that can be displayed separately. Those movable and separate elements make the display more than a simple rectangular box: the case or shelf must suit the arrangement you actually want to show.

LEGO lists the console as over 2.5 inches (6 cm) high, 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide and 7.5 inches (19 cm) deep. Use those figures as the minimum planning envelope for the console itself. They do not include every possible position of the controller or the two separate dioramas, nor do they specify operating clearance for the buttons or lid. Measure the arrangement after you decide whether those pieces will sit beside the console, in front of it or on another shelf.

Kyglaring Light Kit for LEGO PlayStation 72306 Set, Lights Only
  • Lights Only, 72306 Model Sold Separately: Kyglaring LED light kit is designed for the LEGO PlayStation 72306 building set; the package includes lighting and touch-control components only, and the brick model is sold separately
  • Retro Console Lighting: Color-changing accent lighting adds a vivid game-room glow around the gray console and controller, bringing out the disc lid, front controls and removable hidden dioramas. The layered light emphasizes the near 1:1 retro hardware silhouette and gives the display a nostalgic 1990s gaming atmosphere after dark.
  • Touch Color & Multi-Effect Control: Use the touch area to turn the lights on or off and change the accent color; double-tap to switch among multiple lighting effects. Press and hold to adjust effect speed and brightness for different retro gaming display moods.
  • Online Installation Guide: Numbered light packs, slim wiring, and online video and PDF instructions help make each step easier to follow while keeping cable placement neat; power with the included battery box, a compatible power bank, or a 5V USB adapter; batteries not included
  • Retro Gaming Display & 1-Year Replacement Support: Color-changing lighting gives the near 1:1 console and controller a stronger night-display presence on a desk, shelf or game-room setup; contact us through Amazon messages for setup help or 1-year replacement support
  • Console footprint: 10.5 inches wide by 7.5 inches deep, with height over 2.5 inches.
  • Model contents: the console, a controller and separate Gran Turismo and Ape Escape display scenes.
  • Display implication: a case that fits only the console may not fit the controller or dioramas without crowding.
  • Evidence limit: there is no published LEGO-specific lightfastness test that predicts when this set will discolor in a household room.

Because there is no set-specific discoloration timetable, the sensible goal is exposure reduction rather than a promise that the colors will remain unchanged for a defined number of years.

Where to place the model

Keep direct sun out of the display path

Do not use a windowsill or any location where a beam of sunlight reaches the model during part of the day. Sun moves across a room and changes angle by season, so a spot that appears shaded when you install the set can receive direct exposure later. Walk through the room at different times, or observe the proposed shelf over a full day, before committing to it.

Sunlight matters because it combines strong ultraviolet, visible and infrared energy. UV can drive fading and color change, while visible-light exposure also accumulates. A UV-filtering cover addresses only part of that load; it does not make a sunny window safe for prolonged display. The Library of Congress summarizes the permanence problem plainly: “In most cases, conservation treatment cannot reverse light damage.”

Choose a stable, low-traffic surface

A shelf or desk should be rigid, level and deep enough that the entire console sits well inside the front and rear edges. Avoid a narrow ledge, a vibrating speaker cabinet or a surface that people regularly bump. Leave room to lift the model without catching the controller or a diorama on a wall or neighboring object.

Place the set away from radiators, heaters, hot-water pipes, sunny skylights and equipment that exhausts warm air. Heat is a separate risk from light: it can warm the bricks, the surrounding air and any enclosure. Do not put the model directly above a laptop dock, game console exhaust or amplifier that runs hot for long periods.

Check viewing height and access

Set the model at a height where you can see the console front and the separate scenes without leaning against it. If you want to demonstrate the Open or Power buttons, leave hand clearance in front and avoid a case door that must be removed every time. If the model is purely static, a deeper rear position can reduce accidental touches, but it should still be reachable for inspection and dusting.

Open shelf or clear enclosure?

Neither approach is automatically safer. An open shelf avoids the heat and fit problems of a poorly chosen case, while an enclosure reduces dust and casual handling. Compare the trade-offs against how you use the display.

Consideration Open shelf or desk Clear enclosure
Dust and handling Dust settles directly on the model; people and pets can reach it. Acts as a barrier against ordinary dust and casual contact when the door or lid is closed.
Sunlight and cumulative light Does not block light; location must do all the work. May reduce UV if its glazing is specified for that purpose, but bright visible light and long exposure still matter.
Fit Easy to arrange the 10.5-by-7.5-inch console, controller and dioramas separately. Interior dimensions must exceed the complete arrangement, not just the console’s published footprint.
Heat and airflow No enclosed air pocket around the model. Heat can build up, especially if lamps are installed inside; airflow and lamp placement become design issues.
Access to features Buttons and movable details are immediately reachable. A door or lid may need to open before you can operate or rearrange anything.

Choose an open shelf when the room can provide reliable shade, the display is low traffic and occasional dusting is acceptable. Choose an enclosure when dust, pets, children or frequent handling are the larger concern, provided the case is correctly sized and kept out of direct sun.

How to size a case for set 72306

Measure the interior, not the advertised outside size

Manufacturers often quote external dimensions, which include acrylic, glass, frames, hinges or feet. Ask for the usable internal width, depth and height. Start with at least 10.5 inches of width and 7.5 inches of depth for the console, then add clearance for the controller, the scene pieces and the direction in which the door or lid opens.

A tight fit can make installation risky. You may have to tilt the assembled model through a small opening, scrape a controller against the side or remove a diorama whenever you clean the case. A little unused space is more useful than a case that technically contains the console but cannot be opened without contact.

  • Immersive Retro Game-Room Lighting: Color-changing accent light washes the gray console and controller display with a vivid glow, while the disc lid, front controls and hidden diorama presentation remain easy to read. The lighting adds a neon-style night atmosphere to the near 1:1 console replica for desks, shelves or gaming rooms.
  • Clean Installation for Display: Organized light packs, slim wires, and online PDF and video guidance help reduce visible cables around the console and controller and keep the finished model tidy; power with the included battery box, a compatible power bank, or a 5V USB adapter; batteries not included

Map the arrangement before ordering

  1. Decide what stays together. Sketch the console, controller, Gran Turismo scene and Ape Escape scene in their intended positions.
  2. Measure the widest and deepest points. Include any overhanging controller cable-style elements or scene parts, rather than measuring only the console body.
  3. Add handling clearance. Leave room to place the model through the opening and to remove it without twisting the assembly.
  4. Check the opening. Compare the door, front panel or lift-off cover dimensions with the model’s largest diagonal, not only the case’s interior volume.
  5. Confirm the base. Ensure the floor can support the model without rocking and that seams or raised edges will not interfere with the console.

There is no verified exact-fit third-party case for this set in the available specifications. A generic clear acrylic case can be a reasonable category to investigate, but its listing should be treated as a starting point. Confirm the internal dimensions with the seller before buying.

Why LEGO Play and Display Case 5006157 does not fit

LEGO lists Play and Display Case 5006157 at 15.5 inches wide, 5.5 inches deep and over 7.5 inches high. It has a transparent cover and six baseplates and is described as a way to store and display LEGO models while helping keep them free from dust. The depth is the decisive problem: the console itself is 7.5 inches deep, two inches deeper than the case’s stated 5.5-inch depth.

That comparison is based on the published dimensions, not on an attempt to compress or angle the model. Do not buy this case for the PlayStation console unless LEGO publishes a different interior measurement that resolves the discrepancy. Its width and height do not compensate for insufficient front-to-back space.

Using UV filtering correctly

UV-absorbing acrylic or glass can be one layer of protection in an enclosure. Treat the specification as a reduction in ultraviolet transmission, not as a guarantee of color stability. Light damage depends on intensity and duration as well as wavelength, so a model behind UV-filtering glazing can still receive damaging visible light if it is left under bright lamps or near a sunny window.

  • Position the case in shade first; use UV filtering as an additional safeguard.
  • Prefer moderate ambient room light over a bright spotlight aimed at the model.
  • Turn display lighting off when the room is unoccupied if the display does not need to be illuminated.
  • Do not interpret “UV protected” or similar wording as permission for continuous direct sun.

There is no measured set-specific exposure limit for the ABS pieces and colorants in 72306 in the available information. Consequently, an honest preservation plan limits unnecessary exposure rather than assigning a safe number of hours or predicting a date for yellowing.

Lighting and heat inside a case

Do not install heat-producing lamps inside a small enclosure. University of Illinois museum guidance warns that case lighting can create heat, and Library of Congress guidance recommends placing heat-producing sources outside the case while allowing sufficient airflow. The practical arrangement is a lamp outside the enclosure, aimed at the background or the room, with the model receiving only the light it needs.

A safer lighting setup

  1. Place the case away from windows and other intense light sources.
  2. Use room lighting or an external lamp rather than a bulb mounted in the case roof.
  3. Check the case and shelf after the light has been on for a while; if the enclosure feels noticeably warm, move the lamp farther away or reduce its output.
  4. Keep vents and gaps unobstructed so warm air can escape.
  5. Switch the display light off when no one is viewing it.

Do not seal a warm lamp into an acrylic box and assume the transparent walls will dissipate the heat. A cover can protect against dust while also trapping heat if its design and lighting are poorly matched.

Dusting without damaging the build

General museum-object guidance supports gentle brushing and regular dusting for stable objects, but it does not test a particular brush, vacuum, cleaner or coating on LEGO bricks or on this assembled set. There is therefore no manufacturer-approved dusting tool established here.

For an open display

  1. Turn off nearby fans or airflow that could blow loose dust into gaps while you work.
  2. Support the model with one hand if a detail could be pushed by contact.
  3. Use a clean, very soft brush with light strokes, working from upper surfaces toward the shelf.
  4. Remove the controller and separate dioramas only if doing so prevents you from catching adjacent parts.
  5. Stop if a piece loosens; do not force a brush between tightly assembled elements.

Avoid household sprays, solvent cleaners, abrasive cloths and coatings unless LEGO specifically approves them for this model. Do not spray liquid onto the bricks or into seams. If a surface needs more than dry dust removal, consult LEGO’s current care guidance or a conservator rather than improvising a chemical treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an enclosed display

Clean the outside of the case so you do not transfer dust through the door. Open the enclosure only when necessary, and hold the door or lid away from the model while cleaning. Dust on the glazing can make the display look dirty even when the bricks remain protected, so regular exterior cleaning may let you avoid disturbing the set itself.

Step-by-step display setup

  1. Inventory the intended arrangement. Decide whether the console, controller, Gran Turismo diorama and Ape Escape diorama will share one surface.
  2. Record the minimum footprint. Start with the console’s 10.5-inch width and 7.5-inch depth, then add the space required by the other elements.
  3. Survey the room for light. Eliminate windowsills and any shelf that receives direct sun during the day or across seasons.
  4. Remove heat sources. Keep the display away from radiators, vents, hot electronics and lamps that would warm the model or a case.
  5. Choose the protection level. Use an open shelf for a quiet, shaded room; select an enclosure when dust or handling is difficult to control.
  6. Verify internal case measurements. Check width, depth, height, opening size, door swing and base support. Do not rely on outside dimensions.
  7. Stage the model carefully. Put the console on the stable base first, then position the controller and dioramas without pressing them against the walls.
  8. Test access. Confirm that you can reach the Open and Power buttons and remove the arrangement for cleaning without forcing parts through a narrow opening.
  9. Set the lighting. Keep lamps outside the case, provide airflow and use the lowest practical brightness.
  10. Establish a maintenance routine. Inspect for dust and unwanted heat periodically, and reassess the spot when furniture, curtains or seasonal sunlight change.

Common mistakes and fixes

“The case is wide enough, so it must fit.”

Problem: Width is adequate but depth is not. Fix: Compare every interior dimension with the 7.5-inch console depth and the complete arrangement; reject cases that provide only external measurements.

“UV protection makes a window display safe.”

Problem: UV filtering is treated as total light protection. Fix: Move the display out of direct sun and reduce bright, prolonged illumination even when the glazing filters UV.

“A light inside the case will make the model easier to see.”

Problem: The lamp creates a warm, poorly ventilated pocket. Fix: Put the heat-producing source outside the case and maintain airflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A vacuum or cleaner is faster than brushing.”

Problem: Suction, static, moisture or chemicals can disturb small parts or finishes, and no set-specific testing supports that method here. Fix: Use cautious, gentle dry dusting and seek authoritative care advice before using anything stronger.

“The official LEGO case is designed for LEGO, so it fits this model.”

Problem: The Play and Display Case 5006157 is only 5.5 inches deep, while the console is 7.5 inches deep. Fix: Exclude it for the console and look for a case whose internal depth exceeds the full planned arrangement.

Do you need a display case?

No. A case is optional when the model sits on a stable, shaded shelf in a low-traffic room and you are willing to dust it gently. An enclosure becomes worthwhile when it can materially reduce dust, pet contact, accidental touches or repeated handling. It still has to fit the console, controller and chosen diorama layout, and it must not introduce heat or place the model in brighter light.

The preservation priorities are therefore ordered: remove direct sun, avoid heat, provide a stable and appropriately sized display area, then add a clear dust barrier if your room conditions justify it. That order prevents a common mistake—buying a protective-looking case that is too shallow or turning it into a warm, brightly lit box.
