Choose LEGO La Catrina 40492 if you specifically want the La Catrina character in a compact BrickHeadz display model. Choose LEGO Altar of the Dead 40811 if you prefer a larger, two-sided scene featuring both a decorated skull and an altar. The practical decision also depends on age guidance, the kind of display you want, and verified regional stock and pricing. La Catrina is marked retired on LEGO’s U.K. product page, while the U.S. listing for Altar of the Dead showed it available for $14.99 when checked on October 13, 2026; neither status nor price should be assumed unchanged.

What this comparison covers

The two sets answer different versions of the same buying question. La Catrina 40492 is a character-led BrickHeadz model. Altar of the Dead 40811 is a small seasonal display with two presentation sides: a skull on one side and an altar on the other. If your priority is a recognizable figure, the first set is the natural fit. If your priority is a scene with more objects and visual variety, the second set is the stronger match.

This is a focused comparison of those two official LEGO Day of the Dead-themed products. It does not claim that every Day of the Dead set LEGO has released is represented here. The recommendation below is based on the official product descriptions and specifications available for these sets.

La Catrina 40492: the character-focused choice

LEGO’s La Catrina is a BrickHeadz interpretation of the named La Catrina character. Its design uses a dark pink hat, colorful flower elements, and decorative tiles on the face and torso. Those details make the model read as a single stylized personality rather than as a general altar or skull display.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The BrickHeadz format matters when you are deciding how the model will look on a shelf. It is a compact, self-contained figure that can stand on its own without a surrounding scene. That makes it easier to place beside other character models, on a desk, or in a small seasonal display where a full diorama would be too visually busy.

LEGO lists 141 pieces, an age recommendation of 10 and up, and a height of more than 3.5 inches (9 centimeters). The dimensions supplied for this model establish its height, but the official listing used for this comparison does not provide matching width and depth figures.

Availability is the main complication. LEGO’s U.K. product page labels 40492 as retired. “Retired” describes the status shown on that regional LEGO page; it does not guarantee that every secondary-market listing is genuine, complete, or fairly priced. If you find one for sale, the seller, box and instruction condition, parts completeness, and the return policy become part of the purchase decision.

Altar of the Dead 40811: the scene-focused choice

Altar of the Dead takes a different approach. LEGO describes it as a two-sided model. One side presents a skull decorated with LEGO flowers; the other presents an altar with a flower arch and food offerings. The official product wording is: “The skull is embellished with LEGO flowers, while the altar features a flower arch and various foods offerings.”

This arrangement gives you a choice of which face to display, or lets you turn the model around when you want a different seasonal presentation. It is therefore better suited to someone who wants a small scene, not just a single character. The altar side also provides more separate visual elements to examine, while the skull side keeps the display centered on one large motif.

Which set is better for display?

Pick La Catrina for a single-character display

La Catrina is the clearer choice when the character itself is the reason you are shopping. The hat, flowers, and face and torso decoration are integrated into one figure, so the model communicates its subject immediately even when viewed from a distance. Its BrickHeadz styling also makes it a straightforward companion to other character-shaped displays.

Because the supplied specifications give only its height, measure your intended shelf or cubby before buying a secondary-market copy if depth or width is tight. Do not assume that matching height means the two products occupy the same amount of shelf space.

Pick Altar of the Dead for a scene with two faces

Altar of the Dead is better when you want the display to suggest a place and arrangement rather than a single person. The skull and altar sides let you choose between a floral skull presentation and an altar presentation with an arch and food offerings. Its published width and depth also make it possible to plan a shelf position more precisely.

Remember that “two-sided” does not mean both sides are visible at the same time. You need enough clearance to turn the model or to remove it from the shelf when changing the presentation. A position pressed against a wall may make the rear-facing side inconvenient to use.

How to decide by age and building goals

For a child choosing within the official age guidance

Both products are intended for older children rather than for preschool construction. The official guidance places La Catrina at 10+ and Altar of the Dead at 9+. Treat those labels as the starting point for a gift decision, then consider the recipient’s experience with small LEGO elements, patience for decorative steps, and ability to follow illustrated instructions.

The one-year difference should not be treated as a precise measure of difficulty. It is an age recommendation from the product listing, not an independent comparison of build time or skill. No verified build-time study establishes that one set can be completed faster than the other.

For a more substantial parts count

Altar of the Dead has the larger parts inventory, so it offers more individual elements to assemble and more components that contribute to its two display faces. That makes it the better fit for a buyer who equates value with a fuller build experience. Piece count alone does not prove that a set is more difficult, more durable, or more satisfying, so use it as a scope indicator rather than as a quality score.

La Catrina’s smaller inventory supports its role as a compact character model. Choose it when the finished figure matters more than having a larger number of parts on the table.

If the current official listing differs from that observation, use the live regional total rather than the historical figure. A lower sticker price elsewhere may be offset by shipping, import charges, or a condition that is not equivalent to a new, complete set.

Buying La Catrina 40492 after retirement

Since the U.K. LEGO page labels 40492 retired, you may need to evaluate a reseller or collector listing. Compare listings by asking:

  • Is the set complete, including every decorative flower and tile?
  • Are the original instructions included, and are they readable?
  • Is the box present, and does box condition matter to you?
  • Does the seller clearly distinguish new, opened, assembled, and used condition?
  • Are photographs of the actual item provided rather than only stock images?
  • What happens if a part is missing or the item arrives damaged?

Do not treat the existence of a listing as proof of an official current price. A retired product can appear at very different prices depending on completeness, packaging, seller reputation, location, and demand. Set a maximum total cost before you shop so that the character appeal does not override basic value checks.

Display planning before you buy

Check the footprint you actually have

Altar of the Dead has published measurements for height, width, and depth, which lets you reserve a shelf space before ordering. Leave practical room around it so you can turn the model to its other side without knocking nearby objects over.

For La Catrina, the supplied listing confirms a height of more than 3.5 inches (9 centimeters) but does not give corresponding width and depth specifications in the material used here. If the figure must fit into a narrow niche, ask the seller for measured dimensions or verify the current product information before committing.

Decide whether the display is permanent or seasonal

A character model can remain on display year-round without requiring a scene around it. The two-sided altar model is naturally suited to seasonal rotation: you can show the skull face at one time and the altar face at another. That flexibility is useful if you change decorations during the year, but it also means the model needs a reachable position.

Plan for viewing angle

La Catrina’s identity is carried by front-facing character details such as the hat, flowers, and decorated face and torso. Place it where those details are visible. Altar of the Dead rewards a little more planning because its meaningfully different faces cannot both be front-facing at once. A corner shelf may favor one side permanently; a central shelf makes switching sides easier.

Cultural framing and respectful use

The official listings identify both products as themed around Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. LEGO’s description of Altar of the Dead says the model can introduce children to how the tradition is celebrated in Mexico. The product information supplied for these sets does not establish a detailed history of the tradition or support broad claims about its meaning across every community.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a child’s gift or classroom discussion, keep explanations tied to what the model actually depicts: a stylized character, a decorated skull, an altar, flowers, and food offerings. Avoid presenting a small toy model as a complete representation of a living tradition, and seek an authoritative cultural source if you need historical or regional context beyond the product descriptions.

A practical buying decision tree

  1. Start with the subject. If the recipient asked for La Catrina specifically, begin with 40492. If they asked for an altar, skull, or scene, begin with 40811.
  2. Choose the display format. Select the BrickHeadz figure for a single character. Select the two-sided model for a display that can be turned between skull and altar faces.
  3. Check the age guidance. Match the official 10+ or 9+ recommendation to the recipient’s ability to handle small parts and follow instructions.
  4. Measure the shelf. Use the published three-dimensional measurements for 40811. Obtain width and depth information for 40492 if the available space is restrictive.
  5. Verify the buying channel. Confirm live regional stock and total price for 40811. For 40492, inspect the secondary-market listing, completeness, condition, and return terms.
  6. Set a value limit. If a retired La Catrina listing exceeds your budget, choose Altar of the Dead rather than accepting an unverified condition or an inflated total simply because the character is appealing.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the observed price is current everywhere. The $14.99 figure was a U.S. listing observation on October 13, 2026, not a global or permanent price.
  • Assuming “retired” means unavailable everywhere. The U.K. LEGO page labels La Catrina retired, but individual listings may still exist. Evaluate those listings rather than treating them as official current stock.
  • Comparing only piece counts. The models serve different purposes: one is a character, the other is a two-sided scene. More pieces do not automatically make one the better choice.
  • Ignoring the rear face of the altar model. If you cannot reach the set, you may rarely use its second presentation.
  • Buying a used character model without a parts check. Decorative flowers and tiles are central to La Catrina’s appearance, so ask about completeness before paying a collector premium.
  • Turning age labels into a difficulty ranking. The official recommendations are 10+ and 9+; they are not a tested build-time or skill comparison.

Final recommendation

Buy LEGO La Catrina 40492 when the named character and BrickHeadz format are non-negotiable and you can verify a complete, sensibly priced copy despite its retired status on LEGO’s U.K. page. Buy LEGO Altar of the Dead 40811 when you want the more substantial two-sided display, the decorated skull and altar in one model, and a product that was shown as available through LEGO’s U.S. store at the time checked. For a buyer with no strong subject preference, 40811 is the safer practical choice because its official listing was current in the cited U.S. market; for a La Catrina fan, the character-specific 40492 is the more meaningful purchase.
