The LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings: Balrog Book Nook (10367) is easiest to recommend to fans who mainly want an imposing, poseable Balrog and the Bridge of Khazad-dûm scene. Its book-nook format gives it a distinctive place on a shelf, but the frame can feel sparse for a set at its launch price, especially when displayed open. Whether it works for you depends on what you want to see—and where you plan to put it.
What you get in LEGO Balrog Book Nook 10367
LEGO’s product listing describes a 1,201-piece build recreating Gandalf’s confrontation with the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. Both figures are detachable. The Balrog has poseable limbs and wings and carries a fiery whip; Gandalf comes with a staff and sword.
The model is designed to work in two ways: tucked between books as a narrow nook, or opened into a wider display. In its open configuration, LEGO lists dimensions of more than 8.5 inches (22 cm) high, 17.5 inches (44 cm) wide and 6.5 inches (17 cm) deep. Check the width of your shelf before choosing the open display; its footprint is substantially wider than its book-nook placement.

GamesRadar contributor Scott McCrae identifies the Balrog as the highlight, praising its articulation while noting that small pieces and flames can be fiddly during the build. His assessment is based on building the set and trying it in a bookcase and other display locations; the review sample was gifted. Brickset’s independent review likewise points to the Balrog and the architectural detailing as strengths, and highlights the wing mechanism.

That makes the set’s appeal fairly specific: the main draw is the creature and the instantly recognizable confrontation, rather than an elaborate environment that fills every part of the frame. If those characters and the scene are what you want on your shelf, the build has a clear focal point.
The book-nook design creates a display trade-off
LEGO explicitly supports both placement between books and an opened display. In the narrow, bookcase position, the model serves its intended décor role and can feel integrated into a shelf. GamesRadar’s McCrae found it visually effective nestled among books.

Open, the scene and the Balrog’s extended wings are easier to see. Brickset considers the opened configuration better for showing the environment and wings, while also questioning whether the surrounding frame is necessary. The trade-off is that opening it reveals more of the scene but can make the surrounding structure feel less substantial; keeping it among books better disguises that sparseness, but limits how much of the build is visible.
Why the price may be hard to justify
McCrae’s value criticism is that the set feels “a bit bare” for its price point. He argues that other LEGO book-nook sets at the same price are more detailed, and that the open display makes the lack of surrounding detail more apparent. Brickset’s separate concern about the nook format and frame points to a related issue: some of the build’s footprint serves the display structure rather than adding more scene detail.

The LEGO launch announcement listed prices of $129.99 in the US, £109.99 in the UK and €119.99 in the EU in 2025. Those are launch prices, not a guarantee of today’s price or stock; LEGO’s US product page displayed $129.99 when checked for this article, but retail listings can change. Compare the price you actually see with your priorities: piece count alone does not resolve whether the frame and display format feel worthwhile.

- Good fit: a Lord of the Rings fan who chiefly wants a poseable Balrog and a recognizable Gandalf showdown, and who expects to display it between books.
- Consider carefully: someone who prefers a dense, detailed scene across the entire display or expects the open configuration to look equally complete from every angle.
- Check first: anyone with limited shelf space who plans to leave the model open; LEGO’s listed open width is 17.5 inches (44 cm).
The set is not a blanket recommendation, but its central appeal is easy to understand. It puts the Balrog at the center of a striking Tolkien scene and offers two display modes. The reservation is equally clear: if you are paying chiefly for an expansive, richly filled diorama, reviewers’ concerns about sparseness and the frame may matter more than the creature’s strong presence.
