For a five-year-old, the best fit in this comparison is the LEGO City Advent Calendar 2026 (60510). It is the only listed 2026 calendar rated 5+, has 252 pieces spread across 24 surprises, and puts simple instructions inside each door. Choose Friends 42698 for character-and-animal play at age six and up, Star Wars 75456 for a Mandalorian fan who wants the largest 2026 box by piece count, or retired Harry Potter 76438 only after checking its secondary-market condition and price. None of the official product pages gives a standard number of minutes for a daily build, so treat piece counts and instruction style as workload clues rather than promised build times.
Which LEGO advent calendar should you buy?
Start with the child’s age and interests, then use piece count to judge the overall amount of building. The printed age rating is a minimum suitability guide, not a guarantee that every child will build independently. A child who is new to LEGO may need an adult to sort parts, identify pieces, or read the picture instructions even when the calendar is age-rated for them.
Best choice for a five-year-old: LEGO City 60510
The LEGO City Advent Calendar 2026 (60510) is listed for ages 5 and up. It contains 252 pieces divided into 24 daily surprises, with easy-to-follow building instructions printed inside each calendar window. That combination makes it the clearest entry point for a young builder in this group. City’s seasonal vehicles, people, and small scenes also work well when a child wants to play with the model immediately rather than collect character-specific accessories.

Best for character and animal storytelling: LEGO Friends 42698
LEGO Friends Advent Calendar 2026 (42698) is rated 6+. It has 211 pieces across 24 surprises and includes three minidolls and six animal figures. That is the lowest total piece count among the identified 2026 calendars, but the figures provide a strong storytelling payoff: a child can stage scenes, assign roles, and combine each day’s model with the animals and minidolls.
Choose Friends for a six-year-old or older child who values characters, pets, and imaginative stories more than a high piece total. The lower count does not mean every door is effortless; figures and small accessories can involve tiny parts that require careful sorting.
Best for a Star Wars fan: LEGO Star Wars 75456
LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar 2026 (75456) is rated 6+ and contains 293 pieces in 24 daily brick-toy surprises themed around Star Wars: The Mandalorian. It has the highest piece count among the identified 2026 calendars, so it is the strongest choice when franchise appeal matters and the child enjoys building small vehicles, equipment, and character-linked models.
Select Star Wars for a child who already knows The Mandalorian or wants a themed display of mini builds. The 6+ rating should be treated as a practical starting point: a younger child may enjoy the theme but need more hands-on help with small, detailed assemblies.

When Harry Potter 76438 makes sense
LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar 2024 (76438) is a retired 7+ set rather than a current 2026 release. It contains 301 pieces, 16 mini builds, and eight characters, with pictorial instructions. Its piece count is higher than all three identified 2026 calendars, but retirement changes the buying decision: condition, completeness, packaging, and the seller’s price can vary widely on the secondary market.
Consider 76438 only for a Harry Potter fan who specifically wants that set or for a collector who accepts the risks of buying retired stock. Ask whether all 24 doors and parts are present, whether bags have been opened, and whether the instruction material is included. Do not assume that a listing described as “new” has the same condition as a sealed retail box unless the seller explains it clearly.
Age ratings, supervision, and small-part safety
Use the printed minimum age first
The age marking reflects the intended complexity and play pattern. In this comparison, City is 5+, Friends and Star Wars are 6+, and Harry Potter 76438 is 7+. It is sensible to start with the calendar at or below the child’s age only when the child can follow illustrated steps and can keep track of small parts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAge ratings are not developmental assessments. Two children of the same age may have very different experience with LEGO, patience for sorting, and ability to interpret diagrams. If the child becomes frustrated, an adult can build the first model together, pre-sort the day’s pieces, or leave the completed model available for play while returning to the next door later.

Safety around younger children
LEGO parts are small. Keep calendars and opened pieces away from children under three because of the choking hazard. In a mixed-age household, use a tray or lidded container for each day’s parts and check the floor after building. Store unopened doors where toddlers cannot reach them; a calendar’s cardboard packaging is not a childproof storage system.
Supervision is also useful for the calendar routine itself. Open only the current door, avoid tearing adjacent windows, and place the instruction panel and completed model together. If a piece is missing, stop before substituting a similar-looking part; check the packaging, the building surface, and the previous day’s container first.
Piece counts: what the numbers tell you—and what they do not
A calendar’s piece total is the number of LEGO elements supplied for the entire box, not the number used every day. Twenty-four doors distribute the parts unevenly. One day may contain a tiny accessory while another uses several structural pieces and takes more concentration. A higher total therefore indicates more material across the whole calendar, not a guaranteed longer build on every date.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Calendar | Age rating | Total pieces | Daily format and contents | What the total suggests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LEGO City Advent Calendar 2026 (60510) | 5+ | 252 | 24 surprises; easy instructions printed inside each door | A moderate overall workload with the lowest listed age rating |
| LEGO Friends Advent Calendar 2026 (42698) | 6+ | 211 | 24 surprises; three minidolls and six animal figures | Lowest 2026 piece count, with many pieces supporting characters and animals |
| LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar 2026 (75456) | 6+ | 293 | 24 surprises; Mandalorian-themed mini builds and characters | Highest 2026 piece count and a detailed franchise theme |
| LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar 2024 (76438) | 7+ | 301 | 24 daily builds; 16 mini builds and eight characters | Highest total in this table, but it is a retired set bought through secondary-market channels |
The figures above are the totals listed by The LEGO Group for each product: City 60510 and Friends 42698 and Star Wars 75456 for 2026, and Harry Potter 76438 for 2024. They should not be converted into an average by dividing by 24 and presenting that result as a daily specification. An arithmetic average would hide the uneven distribution of parts and the fact that figures, accessories, and structural models create different building demands.

How to compare two boxes fairly
- Check the age band. Exclude a set that is above the child’s current ability unless an adult is intentionally providing substantial help.
- Compare total pieces. Use the count to estimate the amount of material in the complete box, not a promised daily workload.
- Look at what the pieces make. Friends allocates its contents to minidolls and animals; Star Wars emphasizes Mandalorian-themed models and characters; City focuses on everyday seasonal play; Harry Potter combines mini builds with characters.
- Consider the instruction format. City explicitly places simple instructions inside each door. Harry Potter 76438 is described as using pictorial instructions. For Friends and Star Wars, confirm the instructions included with the box and be ready to help a new builder.
How long does each daily build take?
There is no official standard time per day for these calendars. The product pages establish a 24-day structure and describe instruction formats, but they do not publish a measured minutes-per-door figure. A responsible buying guide therefore cannot promise that every opening will take five, ten, or fifteen minutes.
Why daily times vary
- Uneven part distribution: the 24 doors do not have identical piece counts.
- Model type: a flat accessory, figure, vehicle, and larger scene require different numbers of steps.
- Builder experience: an experienced LEGO fan recognizes parts and techniques faster than a first-time builder.
- Sorting and corrections: searching for a tiny piece or rebuilding a missed step can take longer than the construction itself.
- Play versus assembly: a child may spend more time acting out a model than building it, which is part of the calendar’s value but not a build-time measurement.
A practical way to plan your routine
Plan for a short, flexible daily activity rather than a fixed appointment. Open the door when the child has enough uninterrupted time to inspect the instructions, build, and put the model somewhere safe. If the child is tired, stop after identifying the parts and continue later; there is no need to open the next door to keep pace.
Parents who need a more precise estimate can time several consecutive doors at home and label the result honestly: record the child’s age, LEGO experience, calendar model, whether parts were pre-sorted, and whether the timing includes play. A small sample will describe that household’s routine, not an official average for every buyer. Because no such independent timing is established here, the tables use only published piece counts and formats.

Daily instructions and opening strategy
Make the first day easy
- Place the calendar on a stable, well-lit surface away from younger children.
- Open only the numbered door for the current date and keep the cardboard flap intact.
- Empty the day’s parts onto a tray or shallow bowl so a tiny element cannot roll away.
- Read the complete picture sequence before attaching pieces. For City 60510, the easy instructions are printed inside the door; use that panel as the day’s guide.
- Build one step at a time, checking orientation and color before moving on.
- Keep the completed model and any unused spare-looking pieces together until the next day.
When a child needs help
Offer targeted assistance rather than taking over. Point to the relevant picture, help rotate the model, or identify two similar pieces and let the child choose. If a step is genuinely beyond the child’s current skill, build that step together and hand back the model for the next one. This preserves the daily sense of discovery while avoiding a pile of loose parts.

Handling a suspected missing piece
- Recheck the door cavity, the floor, the tray, and the previous day’s container.
- Compare the part with the instruction image; a small element can be hidden behind a larger one or mistaken for a spare.
- Do not dismantle earlier models until you have confirmed that the piece was not stored with them.
- If the part is genuinely absent, record the set number, the building step, and the element description before contacting LEGO customer support or the retailer.
Theme and play-value trade-offs
City: broad play possibilities
City is the most general-purpose option in this group. Its everyday setting can fit existing LEGO vehicles, buildings, and minifigures, so a child does not need prior knowledge of a fictional universe to understand the models. That makes it a practical family choice when siblings have different interests or when the calendar will become part of a larger town layout.
Friends: figures and animals first
Friends is the most character-and-animal-led choice in the 2026 group. Three minidolls and six animal figures create immediate story prompts and can appeal to children who prefer caring, role-play, and relationships over vehicles or battles. The 211-piece total is lower than City and Star Wars, but the number of figures means the box can still feel varied from day to day.
Star Wars: strongest franchise commitment
Star Wars 75456 is aimed at fans of The Mandalorian. The theme supplies motivation that a generic set cannot: a child may be willing to tackle a more intricate mini build because it represents a favorite character or scene. The trade-off is narrower subject matter; a child who is not interested in Star Wars may find the models less engaging even though the calendar has the largest 2026 piece total.

Harry Potter: a retired collector’s option
Harry Potter 76438 offers 16 mini builds and eight characters, but its 2024 release and retired status make availability part of the product decision. The set may appeal strongly to an established fan, yet a buyer should value verified completeness and condition over a superficially low listing price. A damaged box or opened bags may matter little to a child who plans to build immediately, but it matters greatly to a collector.
Availability, price, and purchase checks
Retail price, stock, purchase limits, and “available now” labels are time-sensitive. Check the listing immediately before ordering, especially for a seasonal product and for the retired Harry Potter set. A calendar that is available early in the season may sell out later, while a discounted listing may reflect an opened box, damaged packaging, or incomplete contents.
Questions to ask before paying
- Is the exact set number shown: 60510, 42698, 75456, or 76438?
- Does the listing specify a sealed, complete box, or does it use ambiguous wording such as “mostly complete”?
- For a retired set, are all 24 doors, bags, figures, and instructions included?
- Are returns allowed if a door is empty or a part is missing?
- Does the seller impose a purchase limit or show a delivery date that extends beyond the intended start of December?
Do not treat a displayed price as a permanent MSRP or as evidence of value. Seasonal promotions and secondary-market premiums can change quickly, and the evidence for a product’s piece count or age rating does not establish what a particular retailer is charging.
Decision guide by child and household
| If this describes the child or household | Most logical choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Five years old, new to LEGO, likes everyday scenes | City 60510 | Only listed 5+ option; 24 surprises and simple instructions inside each door |
| Six or older, loves pets and role-play | Friends 42698 | Three minidolls and six animal figures support daily stories |
| Six or older, already follows The Mandalorian | Star Wars 75456 | 24 themed surprises and the largest 2026 piece total |
| Seven or older, specifically wants Harry Potter | Harry Potter 76438 | 16 mini builds and eight characters, subject to retired-set availability and condition |
| Siblings with different interests | City 60510 or the theme the recipient already collects | City is broadly compatible; a strong existing fandom can outweigh a small difference in piece count |
Bottom-line buying advice
For most five-year-olds, buy City 60510. For a six-year-old who prefers animals and character stories, choose Friends 42698; for a Mandalorian fan, choose Star Wars 75456. Treat Harry Potter 76438 as a retired, condition-sensitive purchase rather than a direct 2026 alternative. Compare the published totals—252, 211, 293, and 301 pieces—only as whole-calendar figures, and plan for variable daily builds because LEGO does not publish a standard time per door.
