Use independent verification before you share money or sensitive information. A genuine remote opening should have a specific role, explain its pay and hiring process, and be confirmable through contact details you find yourself on the employer’s official website. A polished logo, a listing on a real job board, a long video interview, or an official-looking offer letter proves nothing on its own: scammers can reproduce all of them.
What makes a remote job offer credible?
Legitimacy is not determined by where you saw the vacancy or how professional the recruiter appears. The deciding test is whether you can independently confirm both the opening and the person recruiting for it. Find the company’s official website or another trusted contact source without using links, phone numbers, email addresses, or documents supplied by the recruiter. Ask the company whether the exact position exists and whether that recruiter is authorized to fill it.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that scammers post on genuine job sites, impersonate known companies, stage virtual interviews, and send convincing paperwork. Treat every apparent sign of professionalism as unverified until the employer confirms it through an independent channel.
- Specific work: The duties, expected output, manager, schedule, and location or time-zone requirements are clear enough for you to understand what you would actually do.
- Explained compensation: The pay structure, payment schedule, and any contingencies are described plainly and are plausible for the role. The FTC does not set a universal salary threshold; an unusually high income for vague, low-effort work is a warning sign rather than proof by itself.
- Verifiable hiring process: You can confirm the job and recruiter with the employer independently, and the process does not rely solely on a personal email account, text message, WhatsApp, Telegram, or online chat.
- No payment to participate: You are not asked to buy a starter kit, training, equipment, access, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or any other item to obtain the job or release supposed earnings.
- Proportionate information requests: The company does not demand your Social Security number, bank details, driver’s license, or other identity data before you have verified the opportunity and understood the role.
None of these checks is a mathematical guarantee. A real employer can use email, request information during a legitimate hiring process, or offer an attractive salary. The point is to evaluate the whole offer and verify it rather than relying on a single reassuring detail.

Fast triage: stop, verify, or proceed?
| What you observe | Best immediate response | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| A clear role appears on the employer’s independently found careers page, and the company confirms the recruiter. | Continue normal due diligence; keep records of the confirmation. | Independent confirmation is the strongest practical check described by the FTC. |
| A personal email address or an interview conducted only by email or chat. | Pause and verify the opening through the company’s official contact channel. | These are red flags, although neither one alone proves fraud. |
| Pay is far above what the vague duties seem to justify, or the message promises quick wealth with little effort. | Do not accept or provide information until duties, pay, and the employer are independently confirmed. | Out-of-line salaries and high-income, low-effort promises are common bait. |
| A request for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, a starter kit, training, or equipment. | Stop. Do not pay or buy anything to obtain the job or get paid. | “Honest employers will never ask you to pay to get a job,” according to the FTC’s June 2025 consumer guidance. |
| A check arrives for equipment or expenses, with instructions to forward money or buy gift cards. | Do not deposit and disburse the funds. Contact your bank through an independently obtained number. | A fake check can appear to clear before the bank discovers it and reverses the deposit. |
| An app shows commissions for liking videos or rating products, then requires your deposit to continue or withdraw. | Stop using it and send no deposit or cryptocurrency. | The displayed balance can be fictional; paying to keep working or access earnings is the defining danger signal. |
| An unexpected text offers a vague remote role and asks you to reply “YES” or “INTERESTED.” | Do not engage through the message. Verify any claimed employer independently. | The FTC’s April 2026 alert links this pattern to later fake-check and task scams. |
Common remote-job scam patterns
Fake recruiter and equipment-check scams
The fraudster impersonates a recognizable company, conducts a convincing virtual interview, and sends an offer letter with logos, signatures, and onboarding instructions. The next demand may be payment for a computer, software, training, or a “starter kit.” In another version, the supposed employer mails a check and tells you to use it for equipment or send part of the money to a vendor, courier, or another account.
Do not treat the check’s apparent availability as proof. Banks can make deposited funds available before a counterfeit check is detected. When the check is rejected later, the bank can remove the money from your account, leaving you responsible for the shortfall. A real-looking interview, branded document, or familiar company name does not change that risk.
Task scams, including “product boosting” and “app optimization”
Task scams advertise simple, repetitive online work: rating product images, liking videos, clicking through “optimization” tasks, or improving an item’s ranking. A website or app displays commissions and may send a small initial payment to create confidence. The balance then grows, but the platform demands that you deposit your own money—often cryptocurrency—to unlock another task set or withdraw the supposed earnings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe number on the screen is not evidence that funds exist. The actionable test is whether you must pay to continue working or to receive money you supposedly earned. If the answer is yes, stop. Do not attempt to recover a displayed balance by making one more deposit; that is how the loss escalates.

Unexpected job texts and messaging-app offers
An April 2026 FTC alert describes messages that claim to represent familiar businesses while offering vague remote positions, sometimes advertising daily or weekly pay without explaining the duties. The sender may ask you to reply “YES” or “INTERESTED.” Continued conversation can lead to a fake check or a task scam. Generic, unsolicited job texts and messages on WhatsApp or Telegram deserve no trust merely because the business name is recognizable.
Identity and banking-data harvesting
A counterfeit onboarding portal can collect a Social Security number, bank account information, driver’s-license details, or other sensitive data. The request may be presented as routine payroll or background-check paperwork before the employer has explained the job or proved that it exists. Delay those disclosures until you have independently verified the opening and the company. A request for data is not automatically fraudulent, but its timing and the verification evidence matter.
How to verify an offer step by step
- Locate the employer independently. Type the company’s web address yourself or find it through a trusted source. Do not click a recruiter-supplied link as your only route to verification.
- Use an official contact channel. Call or email the company using contact information on that independently found site. Ask whether the exact job title, work arrangement, and recruiter are real. Do not use a phone number or email address provided only in the unsolicited message.
- Check the recruiter’s identity. Ask the company to confirm the recruiter’s name, department, and contact method. A personal email account or chat-only process should remain a warning sign until the company confirms it.
- Request concrete job details. Get the duties, reporting line, working hours, location or time-zone expectations, pay structure, payment schedule, and every hiring step in writing. Compare those details with information the company publishes independently. Vague duties combined with implausible pay are a reason to stop, not an invitation to negotiate.
- Refuse every pay-to-work demand. Never pay for the job, training, equipment, a starter kit, access to tasks, or release of earnings. Never deposit a check and forward money, buy gift cards, or send cryptocurrency. The FTC’s concise rule is: “Never pay anyone to get paid.”
- Protect sensitive information until verification is complete. Delay identity and banking details until the employer and opportunity have been confirmed through an independent channel and the role is sufficiently explained. If the request arrives before those checks, treat it as a warning.
- Search for complaints as leads, not verdicts. Search the employer’s and recruiter’s names with terms such as “scam,” “review,” or “complaint.” A complaint can reveal a pattern worth investigating, but a clean search does not prove legitimacy. Positive reviews and testimonials can also be fake or misleading.
- Document what you were sent. Keep the message, email headers, phone numbers, payment instructions, URLs, offer letter, and transaction records. This information can help your bank or an enforcement agency understand what happened.
Compare two remote offers using the same questions
When you have more than one opportunity, apply identical tests instead of letting the more polished presentation set your expectations. The framework below is a risk screen, not a guarantee that an offer is legitimate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Question | Offer A | Offer B | What a reassuring answer looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can the opening be confirmed through an employer contact source you found independently? | Record the evidence. | Record the evidence. | The company confirms the exact role and recruiter through its own channel. |
| Is the recruiter’s identity and business email or phone contact confirmed? | Record the evidence. | Record the evidence. | The company verifies the person and department; a personal account is not the sole proof. |
| Are duties, manager, schedule, pay structure, and payment timing specific? | Record the evidence. | Record the evidence. | You can explain what work you will perform and how compensation is calculated. |
| Is the pay plausible for the described work? | Record the evidence. | Record the evidence. | No “get rich quickly” promise or unusually high income for vague, low-effort tasks. |
| Are you asked to pay, forward a check, buy gift cards, send cryptocurrency, or deposit personal funds? | Yes or no. | Yes or no. | No. Any such demand is a stop signal. |
| Are sensitive identity or banking details requested before verification? | Yes or no. | Yes or no. | No premature request; the employer and role are independently confirmed first. |
An offer that fails one critical payment test should not be “balanced” by a good logo or a friendly interview. Compare evidence, not presentation quality.

Warning signs explained without false certainty
Unusually attractive pay
Scammers use salaries that are out of line with the duties and promises of making a lot of money quickly. There is no universal dollar cutoff that separates a legitimate offer from a scam. Evaluate whether the work is described precisely, whether the compensation method is coherent, and whether the employer confirms the role. A high salary can be real; high pay paired with vague work and urgency is materially more concerning.
Vague duties and urgency
Legitimate employers should be able to explain what you will do and how the hiring process works. A message that supplies only a company name, a pay figure, and a request for an immediate reply gives you no basis to assess the work. Pressure to act before you can verify the employer is itself a reason to slow down.
Personal email or chat-only interviewing
Recruiters can occasionally communicate from non-corporate systems, and some employers use messaging during hiring. These facts are not conclusive alone. They become significant when the recruiter refuses an independently initiated company confirmation or when the entire interview takes place through email or chat with no verifiable business contact.
Early requests for identity or bank information
A fake portal can be designed to look like onboarding. Before entering a Social Security number, bank details, driver’s-license information, or similar data, verify the employer and role through a separate channel. The earlier and more urgent the request, the less it should be treated as routine.

Any payment connected to employment
Requests for a fee, training purchase, equipment payment, starter kit, gift card, or cryptocurrency deposit all create a direct financial risk. Reimbursement promises do not remove it. Nor does a check: forwarding money from a check can leave you liable when the counterfeit is discovered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you already replied, paid, or shared information
If you only replied to the message
Stop engaging and do not follow links or continue to a chat app. Preserve the message and independently verify any claimed employer before taking another step. Do not answer a request for your Social Security number, bank details, driver’s license, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
If you deposited a check or sent money
Do not send additional funds to “fix” the problem or unlock a withdrawal. Contact your bank or payment provider immediately using contact information you obtain independently, explain that the transaction may be connected to a job scam, and ask what protective steps are available. Keep the check, transfer details, receipts, wallet addresses, and all correspondence.
If you submitted sensitive data
Stop providing further information and tell the affected financial institution or account provider what happened. Preserve the fake portal address and messages. For US incidents, report the suspected fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Reporting does not guarantee recovery, but it gives investigators information about the scheme.

What the FTC’s recent figures show—and what they do not
FTC complaint data illustrates the scale of reported job scams, not the total number of victims or incidents. The figures below have fixed periods and methodological limits; they should not be read as current totals or as a measure of every scam.
| Measure | Reported figure | Period and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Task-scam reports | About 20,000 | First half of 2024; estimated from FTC job-scam reports and compared with about 5,000 in all of 2023. These are reports received, not a census. |
| Reported job-scam losses | $223 million (described as more than $220 million) | January through June 2024; reported losses, not total losses across all victims. |
| Reported cryptocurrency losses to job scams | About $41 million | First half of 2024, compared with about $21 million in all of 2023; reported losses only. |
| Estimated share that were task scams | 38.8% | FTC estimate for the first half of 2024, based on hand-coding a random sample of 500 job-scam reports for each year and applying the sample share to the total. |
The FTC notes that many frauds go unreported. The sampling method means the 38.8% figure is an estimate, not a direct count of every task scam.
US reporting and geographic limits
The verification principles—independent confirmation, no payment to obtain work, caution with checks and task deposits, and delaying sensitive data—are broadly useful. The reporting channel above is specific to the United States, as are the FTC complaint figures and cited consumer guidance. Readers elsewhere should use their own country’s official consumer-protection or law-enforcement reporting service rather than assuming the US process applies.
