Browser play means streaming a console or PC session from an official cloud service, not installing a console game inside a web page. Xbox Cloud Gaming at xbox.com/play is the documented legal route covered here. Xbox currently lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (the 2022 release) for cloud play, subject to your region, plan and title listing. The official material reviewed does not establish current browser-cloud availability for Grand Theft Auto V or a specific Halo game, so check the live catalog before relying on either.
What “play on a browser” actually means
A browser does not run the Xbox, PlayStation or Windows build of these games locally. In cloud gaming, the game runs on a remote data-center console or PC. Your browser receives a live video stream and sends controller input back to that session. You therefore need an account, an eligible title and plan, a supported browser and device, a controller (unless the individual game offers touch controls), and a sufficiently stable connection.

This distinction matters because three separate questions are often mixed together:
- Ownership or subscription: do you own the game, or is it included with an eligible Game Pass plan?
- Cloud entitlement: is this exact title and edition enabled for streaming?
- Technical access: are your region, browser, device, account and network supported?
Meeting one condition does not guarantee the others. Xbox warns that game titles, features and availability vary over time, by region, Game Pass plan and platform. Confirm the current local listing immediately before subscribing or buying.

The official browser option: Xbox Cloud Gaming
Where to start
Open Xbox Cloud Gaming and sign in with a Microsoft account. Xbox documents browser access through supported browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Safari. The service page is the authority for current supported devices, regions, plans and catalog entries.
What you need
- A supported country or region and a Microsoft account.
- An eligible Game Pass plan for the title. Xbox currently describes cloud access through Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for eligible games. Select free-to-play games can be streamed with a free Microsoft account.
- A compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. Some games expose Xbox touch controls on supported mobile devices, but touch support is title-specific.
- Broadband with at least 10 Mbps download speed. Xbox notes that some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- A supported browser and device. Performance also depends on your location, local network congestion and the device itself.
Cloud sessions can have limits that do not apply to an installed copy, including reduced video resolution, cloud-only saves or limited accessory support. The service page also says that games from a personal library can be streamed only when they are among the select cloud-playable titles; owning a game by itself is not proof that browser streaming is available.
Game-by-game answer
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022)
Xbox’s current Microsoft Store listing identifies Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II as a cloud-play option. The listing states that cloud play is included with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. With Essential, you must purchase the game to stream it. Plan names and terms can change, and the listing is localized, so verify the current version for your country before paying.

The listing also says that a mobile phone number linked to an Activision account may be required. That is an account requirement in addition to your Microsoft/Xbox sign-in. Use the local listing at the official Modern Warfare II page to check the edition, entitlement and any current restrictions.
In practical terms, Modern Warfare II is the only one of the three named subjects that the reviewed official sources explicitly establish as browser-cloud playable. “Playable” still means subject to your region, plan, catalog status, controller and connection.
Grand Theft Auto V
The reviewed official sources do not establish that Grand Theft Auto V is currently cloud playable in a browser. Do not infer availability from owning the game on another platform, seeing it in a console catalog, or finding an old search result. Search for the exact edition in the live Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog while signed in to the account and region you will use.

If the title does not show a cloud-play button or an eligible entitlement in your local catalog, Xbox Cloud Gaming cannot be treated as a legal browser route for that account at that time. A locally installed PC copy, console copy or remote-play setup is a different access method and is not evidence of browser streaming availability.
Halo
“Halo” covers multiple releases. The official Halo source reviewed here concerns online requirements for Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC), not browser streaming. It therefore cannot establish that MCC, Halo Infinite or another Halo title is currently available through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Check the exact Halo title and edition in the live cloud catalog. If you are playing MCC through a supported console or PC installation, Halo Support’s requirements article says an Xbox network account is needed for online play across supported platforms. It says console online play requires an active Game Pass subscription; a purchased Microsoft Store PC copy does not require an active Game Pass subscription; and Steam PC online play does not require Xbox Live Gold. How to check availability before you spend money
- Identify the exact game. Record the release and edition, such as Modern Warfare II (2022), rather than relying on a broad franchise name.
- Sign in to the account and region you will use. Catalog results and entitlements can differ by location and plan.
- Open the title’s current Xbox listing. Confirm that a cloud-play option is shown, not merely console or PC installation.
- Read the entitlement wording. Determine whether your plan includes streaming, whether a separate purchase is required, and whether an account condition such as a linked phone number applies.
- Check device and browser support. Use a current supported version of Edge, Chrome or Safari on a device listed by Xbox.
- Verify the controller and network. Pair a Bluetooth or USB controller and test the connection against Xbox’s 10 Mbps minimum; allow for the 20 Mbps guidance on some devices.
- Start a short session before committing. Confirm that the game launches, saves correctly and responds acceptably on your network. Streaming behavior can change with congestion and service conditions.
Setting up a browser session
Computer
- Connect a compatible Xbox controller by USB or Bluetooth.
- Open a supported browser and go to Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the entitlement or has the eligible Game Pass plan.
- Find the exact title and select its cloud-play control.
- Allow controller access if the browser requests it, then wait for the remote session to load.
Phone or tablet
- Use a supported mobile browser and a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection that meets the speed guidance.
- Pair a Bluetooth controller or connect one by USB. Use touch controls only when the title explicitly supports them.
- Sign in at the Xbox cloud page, select the title and keep the device on a reliable power source for longer sessions.
Do not assume that a browser session has the same resolution, save behavior or accessory support as an installed copy. Xbox specifically cautions that streamed games can have reduced video resolution, cloud-only saves or limited accessory support.
Connection and controller troubleshooting
The game is missing from search
- Confirm the title and edition, including whether you searched for the 2022 Modern Warfare II rather than another Modern Warfare release.
- Check the account’s country or region and the local catalog. Xbox says availability changes by region, time, plan and platform.
- Verify that the listing offers cloud play. A purchase or download icon alone does not establish streaming eligibility.
- For GTA V or Halo, treat a missing cloud option as “not established for this account now,” rather than switching to an unofficial emulator or unauthorized stream.
The session is blurry or lagging
- Measure download speed and meet Xbox’s 10 Mbps minimum; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality.
- Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi, reduce competing traffic and move closer to the router.
- Use Ethernet on a computer when practical.
- Close other high-bandwidth browser tabs and downloads, then reconnect the controller.
- Remember that Xbox says performance depends on connection, location and device; a compliant speed test cannot guarantee identical latency throughout the day.
The controller is not responding
- Reconnect it by USB or Bluetooth and ensure it is paired with the device running the browser, not another nearby console.
- Refresh the cloud page only after saving or exiting the session when possible.
- If touch controls are offered, use them as a diagnostic alternative; their presence is not guaranteed for every title.
Modern Warfare II asks for another account condition
Follow the title listing’s instruction about a mobile phone number linked to an Activision account. Complete that requirement through the game’s official account flow; your Microsoft sign-in alone may not satisfy it.
Legal alternatives when browser cloud play is unavailable
If GTA V or a Halo title is absent from the cloud catalog, the legal alternatives are platform-specific: install a legitimately purchased PC or console copy, or use an official remote-play feature from hardware you own. Those options stream or run a game from your own computer or console and are not the same as opening a browser cloud session. Their requirements depend on the game publisher and platform, so do not represent them as Xbox Cloud Gaming availability.

Avoid websites offering “free browser versions,” ROM downloads, cracked launchers or unauthorized streams. Besides copyright and account risks, such sites can deliver malware or capture credentials. An official store listing, an Xbox cloud-play button and a valid account entitlement are the practical checks that distinguish the documented route from an unlicensed one.
What can change after you check today
Xbox’s own notice says titles, number of games, features and availability vary over time, by region, Game Pass plan and platform. Catalog inclusion, plan names, cloud-play limits, supported browsers and device requirements can therefore change after this guide was written. The research for this article was checked on October 13, 2026, but the live listing is the final authority when you play. Recheck it immediately before subscribing, purchasing a game or promising that a particular Halo or GTA V edition will work in your browser.
