Ledger confirmed that one affected customer’s device contained an unauthorized hardware implant, in an investigation into reported crypto losses tied to devices bought through Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis. Ledger asked CryptoBilis to pause sales and shipments. But as of October 13, 2026, available reporting does not establish that Ledger has completed—or formally announced—a broader review of its sales policies.
What happened, and what did Ledger confirm?
On October 9, Ledger Support said it was investigating reports of users losing funds in Southeast Asia after buying devices through CryptoBilis. Ledger requested that the reseller pause sales and shipments while the investigation continued.
In an update reported on October 11–12, Ledger said confirmed cases involved devices sold through CryptoBilis. Ledger also confirmed that one impacted user’s device contained an unauthorized hardware implant. In a statement reported by BleepingComputer on October 12, Ledger said: “Ledger can confirm that one of the impacted users’ devices contained an unauthorized hardware implant. Ledger is reaching out to impacted users as part of the ongoing investigation.” Ledger said it was working with authorities.

Ledger reportedly said its own systems and direct sales channels were not compromised. That statement is about the reported incident; it does not establish how the implant entered the reseller supply chain or rule out other risks.

What should I do if I bought a Ledger from CryptoBilis?
Ledger’s reported October 9 guidance covered buyers from the preceding 90 days. If your device is still unopened, leave it uninitialized and check Ledger’s current official support guidance before setting it up. If you already set it up, Ledger advised considering a move to another Ledger signer using a new recovery phrase, or seed. Because incident instructions can change, consult Ledger Support for the latest steps before moving funds.
- Never share your recovery phrase with anyone claiming to be support, an investigator, or a recovery service. A recovery phrase gives control of the wallet’s assets.
- Do not enter the phrase from a potentially affected device into a website, message, or app in response to unsolicited instructions.
- Keep purchase records and packaging if you have them; they may help establish where and when the device was bought.
These steps do not establish that every CryptoBilis device is compromised. The public reports do not provide a definitive affected-device or batch list.

Is the Ledger Nano X affected? Was it spyware?
Ledger has not publicly disclosed a definitive list of affected models. BleepingComputer reported that online researchers discussed implants in Ledger X/Nano X devices, while noting that Ledger had not identified the compromised device type. That discussion is not confirmation that the Nano X is the only affected model—or that every Nano X is affected.

How much cryptocurrency was stolen?
There is no verified total in the reporting available as of October 13, 2026. The Block reported two on-chain estimates: researcher tanuki42 estimated more than $72 million in 2026, and researcher Specter estimated more than $86 million in 2026. The figures were unconfirmed, and the extent to which the analyses overlap is unclear. They should not be treated as confirmed customer losses. Reports also do not settle the number of affected customers or devices.
Does this mean Ledger’s systems were hacked?
Ledger’s reported October 11 update said its systems and direct sales channels were not compromised, and that confirmed fund-drain cases involved devices sold through CryptoBilis. The incident therefore points to a reported problem involving devices from that reseller, not a confirmed breach of Ledger’s own systems. The public information does not yet explain the implant’s origin, mechanism, or full scope.

This is distinct from the 2023 Ledger Connect Kit incident, which involved malicious code in a software library. That earlier event is not evidence about the 2026 hardware implant and does not show that Ledger has completed a sales-policy review.
What do Ledger’s sale terms say about reseller purchases?
Ledger’s website sales terms describe the roles in online purchases made through Ledger’s site: Global-e is identified as the seller under the consumer sale terms, with regional seller details that can vary, and personal data may be processed by both parties. Those terms are a baseline for orders through Ledger’s website. They do not document the full arrangements for every local reseller or demonstrate what controls applied to CryptoBilis.

Ledger’s shop privacy policy, last updated in March 2026, describes how the company handles personal data for the shop and explains rights such as requesting access, correction, or deletion, subject to legal retention obligations. Ledger Recover has a separate privacy policy, last updated in October 2023, for that service and its providers. Its disclosures should not be read as evidence about hardware-sale customer data or the CryptoBilis incident.
Ledger’s Legal Center lists separate documents for sales terms, product manuals, replacement terms, Ledger Recover, and affiliate arrangements. The existence of those documents does not show that Ledger changed them in response to this incident.
Can I trust an authorized reseller?
Authorization alone does not establish that a device could not be tampered with later, and the incident does not show that all devices from other sellers or channels are compromised. For a purchase or support question, check the seller’s current status for your country with Ledger and establish who sold and fulfilled the order. Keep the receipt and packaging, and use the current official support and return or replacement paths for your region. An authenticity check should not be treated as proof that a device’s entire custody chain was secure unless Ledger says it can establish that.

What is known about a Ledger sales-policy review?
As of October 13, 2026, public reporting establishes a request to pause CryptoBilis sales and shipments during an investigation, but not a final Ledger review of broader sales policies or an announced set of policy changes. No named Ledger executive statement about a completed 2026 sales-policy review is established in the reports cited here. A pause involving one reseller should not be presented as proof that a company-wide review is finished.
Status as of October 13, 2026: Ledger confirmed one unauthorized hardware implant and said it was contacting impacted users and working with authorities. A final technical report, definitive model or batch list, reconciled loss total, verified affected-customer count, and completed broader sales-policy response were not established in the available reporting.
