Neither Ledger nor Trezor is universally the safest choice. Ledger’s current design puts Secure Element isolation and a protected transaction-display path at the center of its security model. Trezor’s Safe range combines open-source, auditable software with new Secure Elements and layered hardware defenses. Your safer choice depends on the exact model, the attacks you are trying to resist, and whether you can protect your recovery backup and verify every transaction on the device.

For most long-term holders, the decisive control is not the logo on the wallet. It is the recovery phrase or backup: whoever obtains it can usually restore the wallet elsewhere. A current device bought through an authorized channel, an offline backup that has never been photographed or typed into a computer, and careful on-device address verification matter more than a simplistic Ledger-versus-Trezor ranking.

What “safer” means for a hardware wallet

A hardware wallet keeps private keys away from a general-purpose computer or phone and asks the device to approve transactions. That reduces the chance that malware can simply copy a key. It does not make cryptocurrency transactions reversible, and it does not protect a recovery phrase that a person has disclosed.

“Safer” can refer to different threats:

  • Compromised computer or phone: malware may alter an address or amount before you approve a payment.
  • Physical theft: an attacker may try to guess a PIN, extract secrets from chips, or pressure you for a backup.
  • Counterfeit or modified device: a supply-chain attacker may replace hardware or packaging.
  • Lost, damaged, or reset device: you need a usable recovery backup to restore access.
  • Human error and phishing: a convincing website or support message may ask for the recovery phrase.
  • Vendor and firmware trust: users differ on whether they prefer a closed security component or code and hardware that can be inspected publicly.

Ledger and Trezor address these risks differently. Their published materials describe security architectures and individual incidents, not a universal breach-rate or failure-rate ranking. No authoritative comparative security percentage is established, so a claim that one brand is “always safer” goes beyond the available evidence.

Ledger and Trezor use different security philosophies

Ledger: a protected display-and-signing boundary

Ledger’s comparison documentation says its Secure Element parses transaction data, constructs what appears on the device display, and signs the transaction inside the same protected environment. Current models use Secure Elements with EAL5+ or EAL6+ certifications, according to Ledger. The intended benefit is that a compromised host computer has less opportunity to make the device show one transaction while signing another.

This is an architectural characteristic and a vendor claim, not proof of a universal security ranking. A user still has to read the destination address, amount, and network on the hardware-wallet screen. Approving a malicious transaction because the screen was ignored defeats the display boundary.

Trezor: open-source inspection with layered hardware

Trezor says its device software has always been open source and auditable. That lets researchers and technically capable owners inspect firmware and reproduce verification steps rather than treating the firmware as an opaque product. Trezor’s own security documentation states: “The software used in Trezor devices has always been open-source to be fully auditable.”

Older comparisons often describe Trezor as having no Secure Element. That is no longer accurate for the Safe generation. Safe 3 adds a dedicated Secure Element while retaining the open-source approach. Safe 7 goes further with a TROPIC01 secure element, an OPTIGA Trust M secure element, and an STM32U5 microcontroller in a layered design. Trezor documents signature checks for firmware updates and requires physical confirmation on the device.

Open source improves auditability, but it does not guarantee that every vulnerability has been found or that a user will identify a phishing attack. A Secure Element can raise the cost of physical extraction, but it does not stop a person from revealing a recovery phrase. These are complementary defenses rather than substitutes.

Security architecture comparison

Security question Current Ledger design Trezor Safe 3 and Safe 7 What it means for you
Secure Element Ledger lists EAL5+ or EAL6+ Secure Element certifications across current models. Safe 3 adds a dedicated Secure Element; Safe 7 uses TROPIC01 and OPTIGA Trust M alongside an STM32U5 microcontroller. Both current families include hardware intended to make physical extraction harder, but implementation and threat coverage differ.
Transaction parsing and display Ledger says the Secure Element parses transaction data, builds the display, and signs within the protected environment. Trezor requires on-device confirmation and documents signed firmware updates; the supplied material does not establish an equivalent claim that one Secure Element both renders and signs every transaction. Always compare the final address, amount, and network on the device, not on the computer screen.
Source transparency Secure Element firmware and vendor components are not presented as fully open source in the supplied comparison. Trezor describes its software as open source and auditable. Choose the level of public inspectability you are comfortable trusting.
Recovery standards BIP39 is the broad default recovery standard listed by Ledger. Safe 3 supports BIP39 and SLIP39 backups. Check portability before purchase and record which standard your backup uses.
Firmware authenticity Use the vendor’s authenticity and firmware checks; exact procedures vary by model and current software. Firmware updates are signature-checked and require physical confirmation on the device. Do not install a file or approve an update from an unsolicited message.
Physical attack resistance Secure Element isolation is the central stated defense. Safe models combine open design with Secure Elements; Safe 7 uses three hardware layers. Physical resistance matters only if the attacker does not already have your backup or passphrase.
Connectivity and supported assets These vary by model and software version; selected devices, such as the Ledger Nano X, include Bluetooth. These vary by Safe model and supported wallet software. Verify the exact asset, network, connector, and wireless requirements before buying.

Why the exact model and generation matter

“Trezor” is not one fixed architecture. A comparison based on an older Trezor model may omit the Secure Element in Safe 3 and the multi-layer design in Safe 7. Likewise, “Ledger” covers several generations with different screens, connectors, wireless features, and supported assets. Security conclusions should name the model and firmware generation, not just the brand.

  • the exact model name and hardware revision;
  • supported coins, tokens, networks, and account types;
  • USB, Bluetooth, or other connection requirements;
  • the recovery standard used by that model;
  • firmware support status and update procedure;
  • the device’s authenticity-verification flow.

Do not assume that a feature available on one model is present on every device sold under the same brand.

Your recovery backup is the real master key

The hardware wallet protects keys while they are in the device. The recovery phrase or backup recreates those keys outside it. Anyone who sees or copies that material may be able to restore the wallet on another compatible device without your PIN. Conversely, destroying the device does not destroy funds if the backup remains private and complete.

BIP39, SLIP39, and passphrases

Ledger lists BIP39 as its default recovery standard. Trezor Safe 3 supports both BIP39 and SLIP39. These are not interchangeable word lists: a restoration must use the standard and backup format generated by the original wallet. Record the format and any required share or word count in a way that does not reveal the secret itself.

A passphrase creates an additional, separate wallet derived from the recovery backup. It can provide a hidden-wallet or plausible-deniability arrangement, but it is not a password that a company can reset. A mistyped or forgotten passphrase leads to a different wallet, and the associated funds can become unrecoverable. Store the passphrase separately from the recovery words and test your documented recovery plan with a small amount before relying on it for a major balance.

Safe 7 backup handling

Trezor’s Safe 7 architecture guide says the wallet backup is not stored on either secure element. It remains encrypted in microcontroller flash while the secure elements hold secrets needed to decrypt it. The same guide says Safe 7 erases the wallet after 10 incorrect PIN entries, after which restoration requires the backup. This makes an accurate, private backup essential; PIN retry protection is not a substitute for one.

How to set up either brand safely

  1. Buy through an official store or authorized reseller. Inspect the packaging, seals, and the device’s authenticity check. Reject a unit with unexplained damage, a preconfigured wallet, or a recovery phrase supplied by the seller.
  2. Install only the official wallet software. Type the vendor address yourself or use a bookmark you created. Avoid sponsored search results, unsolicited support links, and browser extensions with similar names.
  3. Initialize the device yourself. Let the hardware wallet generate the recovery words. Never accept words printed on a card, shown in an email, or sent by support.
  4. Write the recovery backup offline. Follow the device’s exact order and spelling. Do not photograph it, scan it, paste it into a note, or store it in cloud storage.
  5. Verify the backup before depositing a large balance. Use the device’s recovery-check function if provided, then perform a small restoration test on a separate, reset device or another supported wallet.
  6. Set a strong PIN and document the model. Keep the PIN separate from the backup. For a passphrase wallet, record where the passphrase is stored without writing it beside the recovery words.
  7. Send a small test transaction. Confirm the asset and network, then compare the full destination address and amount on the hardware-wallet screen.
  8. Scale up only after the test succeeds. Keep the device and backup in separate secure locations and establish who can access them if you become unavailable.

What to do when a computer or phone may be compromised

Disconnect the suspected host from the internet, stop approving transactions, and use a clean, updated device to verify wallet software. A compromised host can display a substituted address or request an unexpected approval. The hardware-wallet screen is the decision point: compare the address, amount, token contract where applicable, and network there. If the device shows a mismatch, reject the transaction.

If you entered your recovery phrase into a website, support chat, form, browser extension, or computer, assume it is exposed. Create a new wallet on a clean device, write a new backup, and move funds to it. Changing a PIN does not repair an exposed recovery phrase.

What happens if the hardware wallet is stolen?

When only the device is stolen

A properly initialized device should require its PIN. Ledger’s Secure Element design and Trezor’s Safe protections are intended to resist attempts to extract secrets, but no device should be treated as an invulnerable safe. Monitor accounts from a separate trusted device and, if you suspect the PIN or device integrity is compromised, restore from your backup on a verified replacement and move funds.

When the backup is stolen or copied

The risk is immediate and independent of the hardware. Restore the wallet on a trusted device, move every asset to a newly generated wallet, and retire the old backup. If a passphrase protects the funds, treat a disclosed passphrase and recovery words as a complete compromise.

When the device and backup are both lost

The device may be replaceable, but access depends on reconstructing the exact backup and passphrase. Test that recovery plan before an emergency; a missing word, wrong SLIP39 share, or forgotten passphrase cannot be inferred from the public blockchain.

Recent Safe 7 vulnerability context

On June 3, 2026, Trezor disclosed that a Ledger Donjon audit found a laser fault-injection path in the TROPIC01 secure element used by Safe 7. Trezor says exploiting it requires physical possession, disassembly, chip decapsulation, specialized laboratory equipment, and deep expertise. It also says the issue cannot expose Safe 7 funds, PINs, or wallet backups because TROPIC01 is only one of three independent hardware layers.

This incident is a useful limit on absolute language. “Open source” does not mean free of vulnerabilities, and “Secure Element” does not mean impossible to attack. Layering, update controls, physical access, and backup discipline determine the practical outcome. A remote phishing attack remains a more relevant threat for many owners than a laboratory fault-injection attack.

Which wallet fits which user?

Your priority More natural fit Reason and qualification
Secure Element isolation and a tightly controlled transaction display Current Ledger model Ledger centers its design on Secure Element parsing, display construction, and signing.
Publicly inspectable software and transparent firmware Current Trezor Safe model Trezor emphasizes open-source auditability and signature-checked updates.
BIP39 portability across compatible wallets Ledger, or a Trezor configured for BIP39 Ledger lists BIP39 as its broad default; Safe 3 also supports BIP39, but verify the exact configuration.
SLIP39 backup shares Trezor Safe 3 Safe 3 supports BIP39 and SLIP39; confirm that every recovery share is stored correctly.
Bluetooth connectivity Selected Ledger models, such as Nano X Connectivity is model-specific and should be weighed against your own pairing and mobile-use habits.
Large balances with a sophisticated threat model Either, with additional controls Use current firmware, separate backups, a passphrase plan, test recoveries, and independent transaction verification.

Do not choose from brand reputation alone. Compare the exact model, recovery format, supported assets, connectivity, firmware status, and your ability to secure the backup for years.

Operational checklist before holding serious funds

  • The device came from an official or authorized channel and passed its authenticity check.
  • No seller or support agent supplied a recovery phrase.
  • The wallet was generated on the device, not on a computer or phone.
  • The recovery backup is offline, private, legible, and stored separately from the device.
  • Any passphrase is unique, memorized or stored securely, and tested through a small recovery exercise.
  • Firmware was obtained through the official update path and physically confirmed on the device.
  • Every transaction is checked on the hardware-wallet screen for address, amount, asset, and network.
  • You have a written plan for theft, loss, incapacity, and inheritance that does not reveal the secret.

Verdict: Ledger or Trezor?

Choose a current Ledger when your primary concern is Secure Element-based physical isolation, a protected transaction-display boundary, broad BIP39 use, and the features of Ledger’s ecosystem. Choose a current Trezor Safe model when you place greater value on open-source auditability, transparent firmware, flexible backup formats, passphrases, and a modern Secure Element-equipped design.

For either choice, the strongest universal recommendation is procedural: use a current model, verify every approval on the device, keep recovery material offline and separate, and plan for device loss before depositing substantial funds. Those habits address the attacks most likely to defeat a hardware wallet, regardless of which architecture you prefer.
