A ledger and a database table are different kinds of things: a ledger is a meaningful record of accounting entries or events governed by rules, while a table is one structure a database can use to store records. A ledger can be built from one or more tables, and a table does not become a ledger just because it holds rows of transactions.

What a ledger means—and what a table means

A ledger describes how records are organized and interpreted: what an entry represents, which fields or dimensions matter, and what rules govern adding or correcting entries. In accounting, it may organize financial entries for reporting. In event tracking, it may mean a sequence of recorded events.

A database table is a storage structure: rows hold records, and columns hold fields. The table itself does not establish that its rows are accounting entries, events, or any other particular kind of record. That meaning comes from the application and the rules applied to the data.

So “ledger” is primarily a domain concept; “table” is a database structure. Software may implement a ledger using tables without making the two terms interchangeable.

Why some software calls a ledger a table view

The terminology is not universal. SAP’s documentation for its Special Purpose Ledger describes a ledger as an extract from a database table, containing only the dimensions of the underlying table needed for reporting. It says a system can have one ledger for each database table or multiple ledgers for a table. SAP Help: “Ledgers”

In a different SAP documentation context, the term has a more technical meaning: SAP says that “ledger” describes a technical view of a database table and is used there as a synonym for a general ledger. That is a definition for that documentation, not a general definition of ledgers across databases or accounting systems. SAP Help: “Configuring Ledgers”

How an accounting ledger can map to database storage

A logical ledger does not have to map one-to-one to a physical table. SAP ERP documentation describes dimensions as fields or columns in a database table and explains that ledgers can share table structures when they use overlapping dimensions. SAP ERP Help: “Configuration”

That gives a useful way to think about implementation: the ledger identifies the records and dimensions meaningful to a particular accounting or reporting task; the database design determines where and how those records are stored. Depending on the system, a ledger may use selected fields from a table, share a table structure with another ledger, or be represented through multiple structures. The exact mapping depends on the product.

How a distributed ledger differs

“Distributed ledger” adds a question of control and maintenance; it does not erase the distinction between meaning and storage. Cardano’s developer curriculum describes a ledger as an ordered list of records tracking events in sequence. It distinguishes a database ledger maintained by one server or cluster from a distributed ledger maintained by independent participants following a protocol. The useful comparison is not simply “table versus blockchain.” Ask who can authorize writes, where copies are maintained, how participants agree on additions, and how the logical record is represented in storage. A distributed ledger is distinguished by its shared maintenance and protocol, not merely by the fact that it records events. Conversely, the word “ledger” alone does not establish that records are decentralized or immutable.

A practical way to compare the terms

Question Ledger Database table
What does the term describe? A meaningful set of accounting entries or events, with associated rules. A structure of rows and columns for storing records.
Does the term specify storage? No. Its implementation may use one table, several structures, or replicated records. Yes, it names a particular database structure.
Does the term specify who controls updates? Not by itself. A conventional system or a distributed protocol may govern writes. Not by itself. Access and update authority depend on the database and application.
Does the term guarantee immutable records? No universal guarantee follows from the word “ledger.” No. Update and history behavior depend on the system.
Can the concepts overlap? Yes. A ledger can be implemented using database tables. Yes. A table can store ledger entries, but it can also store unrelated data.

Which term should you use?

  • Use ledger when you mean a set of accounting entries or ordered events and the rules that give those records their significance.
  • Use database table when you mean the rows-and-columns structure that stores fields and records.
  • When a product’s documentation uses ledger as a technical synonym for a table or view, treat that as product-specific terminology and check the documentation for the relevant version.
  • When discussing a distributed ledger, specify the governance model: who maintains copies, who can write, and what protocol governs agreement.
