A flashlight test can help you tell whether a dark LED TV may still be producing a picture without its backlight. With the TV on, darken the room, hold a flashlight several inches from the screen, and shine it across the panel at an angle. Look closely for a faint menu, shapes, or movement; do not press the flashlight against the screen. This is a preliminary check, not a diagnosis of a particular failed part.
How to check your TV screen with a flashlight
- Turn the TV on and darken the room as much as possible.
- Hold a flashlight several inches from the screen and direct its beam across the panel at an angle. Keep it off the screen.
- Look closely for a faint picture, menu, shapes, or movement. If possible, display a known menu or video so you have something to look for.
- Note whether you can see an image and whether the TV has sound, status lights, or other signs of power. These observations help guide troubleshooting but do not identify a failed component. TCL describes the flashlight check as a basic observation, not a way to identify the exact failed component.
What the flashlight result can—and cannot—tell you

Basic checks before contacting support
- Check whether the TV responds to its remote or physical power button. Note any status light, startup sound, or audio.
- If you can, open Home or another known TV menu. Try a different app or source to see whether the issue affects all content or just one input.
- For an HDMI source, confirm the selected input, reseat the cable, and try another port or cable if available.
- Note whether the screen is black on every input, whether sound continues, and what happened during the flashlight check. Have the TV model number ready when contacting support.
If the same black-screen problem persists across sources, or sound continues with no visible picture after these checks, contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician. TCL’s support guidance treats the flashlight test as an initial observation rather than a substitute for service diagnosis.
When to stop troubleshooting
Unplug the TV immediately if you notice smoke, sparks, a burning smell, excessive heat, a damaged power cord, or physical damage. Do not continue using or testing a TV with any of these warning signs; seek manufacturer or qualified service support. TCL’s troubleshooting guidance advises stopping and seeking help for safety-related symptoms.
