LED strips, puck lights, slim bars, and motion-sensor lights can brighten shadowy counters, cabinets, shelves, and closets—but the available information does not verify that every setup costs less than $20 on Amazon. Prices and stock change, and a multi-light setup or a separately purchased power supply can push the total higher. Treat the ideas below as low-cost approaches, then check the live listing and everything you need before buying.
Pick a light that fits the space
Start with the coverage pattern you need: puck lights make distinct pools of light, an LED strip gives low-profile continuous coverage, and a light bar spreads light along a longer surface. Power and controls matter too: options may be battery-powered, rechargeable, plug-in, hardwired, manually switched, or motion-activated. Check the particular product listing for its actual features and included accessories.
1. Run an LED strip beneath a cabinet
For a shadowed counter, an adhesive LED strip can provide a continuous wash along the underside of a cabinet. Measure the section first and check the strip length, power method, and whether its mounting method suits the surface. Include any required power supply or mounting accessories in the total cost.

2. Add a strip beneath a shelf
A low-profile strip beneath a shelf can brighten the surface below without taking up counter or shelf space. This works well when you want a longer, continuous line of light rather than isolated bright spots. Confirm that the strip can be mounted where you plan to use it and that its power lead can reach an outlet if it is plug-in.

3. Put puck lights inside a cabinet
Puck lights create localized pools, making them useful for a cabinet where you want to illuminate particular stored items or a display. Lumens gives 8–12 inches between pucks as general spacing guidance for even coverage; adapt the spacing to the cabinet, the light’s output, and the product’s directions.
4. Use puck lights under a shelf
Use a puck beneath a shelf when a few focused pools suit the objects or small areas below better than a continuous strip. If you need more even coverage, consider the spacing guidance above and account for the number of pucks required—the cost of a multi-light setup may exceed the price of one unit.

5. Fit a slim bar beneath a cabinet
A slim light bar can spread light over a longer work surface, making it a practical option for a counter used for food preparation or other tasks. Choose among plug-in, battery, or hardwired formats according to the space and installation; check what is included and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
6. Light a pantry with a motion sensor
A motion-sensor light can be convenient in an intermittently used pantry, especially when you want hands-free illumination. Sensor behavior and power type vary, so verify both on the specific listing rather than assuming every motion-sensor model works the same way.

7. Add hands-free light to a closet
For a closet visited occasionally, a motion-sensor cabinet light or bar can turn on when you enter or reach for something. Check the sensor’s behavior and power source, and make sure the mounting approach fits the location. A light intended for a cabinet is not automatically suitable for every closet placement.
8. Brighten a dark display shelf with pucks
Use puck lights to emphasize selected objects on a shelf or in a display cabinet. Their concentrated pools create a different effect from a strip’s continuous wash, so position them to suit what you want illuminated rather than expecting uniform light across the whole shelf.

9. Pair task lighting with lower ambient light
When a counter or work area is the problem, place a strip or bar to illuminate that task area instead of relying only on stronger overhead lighting. The U.S. Department of Energy’s FEMP guidance discusses combining task lighting with lower ambient overhead light levels where practical. This is a lighting approach, not a guarantee of a particular energy saving from any individual low-cost fixture.

A smart strip may offer app or smart-home control, and color effects can add atmosphere, but those features are not necessary to solve a functional dark spot. Check availability and the complete setup cost before choosing one. How to check the under-$20 total
Because prices and availability change, verify the live Amazon listing before relying on a budget claim. Check the price of the configuration you need—not just the first price shown—and whether it includes the power supply, mounting materials, and enough lights to cover the area. If you need multiple units or separate accessories, add those costs together before deciding whether the setup fits your budget.
- Coverage: Decide whether you want focused pools, a continuous strip, or a longer bar.
- Power and installation: Confirm whether it is battery-powered, rechargeable, plug-in, or hardwired, and check the mounting method.
- Control: Verify whether it is manual, motion-activated, or smart-controlled, including the sensor behavior if applicable.
- Light output: Compare output and distribution for the task rather than choosing by appearance or wattage alone.
- Total cost: Count all required units and accessories, then confirm current stock and price.
Compare light output in context
Light-output criteria depend on fixture type. ENERGY STAR’s current downlight criteria, on a page accessed in 2026, list a minimum efficacy of 82 lumens per watt. They also list minimum output of 345 lumens for downlights with apertures up to 4.5 inches and 575 lumens for larger apertures. These are downlight criteria, not universal targets for decorative strips, puck lights, or cabinet bars; use them only when comparing the relevant downlight category.
ENERGY STAR also says certified downlights use 90% less energy than traditional incandescent models; the year for that claim is not stated on the cited page. That comparison is specific to ENERGY STAR certified downlights and should not be generalized to every inexpensive LED strip or puck.
