To make your phone light up for alerts, enable its built-in flash-notification setting. Android and iPhone can use the camera LED, the screen, or both, while some Samsung Galaxy phones also offer Edge lighting. The exact choices and menu labels vary by device and software version.
First, identify which kind of light alert you want
“LED notification” can refer to more than one feature. A dedicated notification LED is a small indicator light built into some phones; a camera-flash alert uses the bright LED beside the rear camera; a screen flash briefly lights the display; and Samsung’s Edge lighting illuminates the display edges for alerts. Your phone may offer one or several of these options.
Consider where the phone usually sits and whether you need to notice alerts while it is locked, unlocked, silent, or in Do Not Disturb. These are useful questions when choosing between available options, not guarantees that every model supports every behavior.
Turn on flash notifications on Android
- Open Settings and go to Notifications > Flash notifications. On some devices, open Settings > Accessibility > Flash notifications instead.
- Turn on Camera flash, Screen flash, or both, depending on which options appear.
- If available, choose a screen-flash color and use the preview to check how it looks.
Google says an incoming notification triggers a couple of flashes. For calls and alarms, flashing continues until you answer the call or dismiss or snooze the alarm. Camera-flash notifications are not supported on every device. Google also says, “Flash notifications still work in silent mode,” and that they follow Do Not Disturb settings. Turn on flash alerts on iPhone
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Flash for Alerts.
- Enable the alert and choose LED Flash, Screen, or Both, as shown on your iPhone.
- Set Flash While Unlocked and Flash in Silent Mode according to when you want alerts.
The LED is on the back of the iPhone beside the camera lens. Apple’s iPhone guide documents the unlocked and silent-mode controls. A separate Apple support page says LED Flash for Alerts works only while the device is locked; because Apple’s pages describe different controls, check which options your iPhone and software version actually show. Find lighting options on a Samsung Galaxy
Some newer Galaxy models do not include a dedicated notification LED. Samsung documents alternatives including Edge lighting and accessibility flash notifications, but the settings path depends on the model and software version.

- Open Settings and use Settings search for Flash notification or Edge lighting.
- Open the matching result and follow the options shown for your Galaxy model.
- If a result is missing or the steps do not match your screen, consult Samsung’s instructions for your specific model and software.
Samsung’s US support guidance covers both alternatives and notes that availability and paths vary. Samsung’s Galaxy lighting and LED notification guidance provides its model-specific context.
If the expected light does not appear
- The setting is missing: Your phone may not support that type of alert, or the option may be listed under a different Settings category. On Galaxy, try searching Settings for the feature name.
- The camera does not flash: Android camera-flash alerts are device-dependent. Try Screen flash if it is available.
- The alert is not visible from where the phone sits: A rear camera flash is easiest to see from behind the device; a screen flash is visible from the display side. Choose the available effect that suits the phone’s usual position.
- Behavior changes in silent mode or Do Not Disturb: Check the platform-specific controls. Android says its flash notifications follow Do Not Disturb and still work in silent mode; iPhone provides a separate Flash in Silent Mode control.
What about LED alerts on iPad?
Do not assume every iPad supports LED Flash for Alerts. Apple lists supported iPad Pro and iPad mini models on its support page; check that list for your device before looking for the setting. Apple’s page says the LED alert works only while the iPad is locked. Apple’s supported iPhone and iPad LED flash alert information includes the model details.
