For most trees, LED strings are the practical default: the U.S. Department of Energy says LED holiday light strings use 70% less energy than conventional incandescent strings and are less likely to burn out or break. Traditional incandescent strings can still be the right choice when a specific bulb appearance matters more than operating cost or maintenance. The safest choice is whichever properly certified, undamaged string matches your space, has the right indoor or outdoor rating, and stays within its connection limits.
LED vs. incandescent: the decision at a glance
“Traditional string lights” generally means incandescent holiday lights: electricity heats a small filament inside each bulb until it glows. LEDs create light with light-emitting diodes and use a different electrical design. The label on the package, not the technology name alone, determines the string’s wattage, length, bulb shape, color, spacing, weather rating, and connection limits.

The DOE figures are useful for understanding the direction and potential size of the difference, not for predicting your bill. They come from a 2015 illustration using one tree, one schedule, and unspecified product wattages. Current prices, local electricity rates, and the wattage printed on your chosen strings determine today’s result.

How the two technologies behave when a bulb fails
Incandescent strings use filament bulbs and shunts
In an incandescent bulb, a filament glows as current passes through it. Holiday strings commonly use series-parallel wiring. Incandescent strings use shunts that can keep current flowing when a filament fails, but the exact behavior depends on the string’s design and the failed component. A dark section does not prove that every incandescent string has the same fault or repair method.

LED strings use diodes and a different failure path
LED strings typically do not use the same shunts. DOE explains that a failed LED typically short-circuits, allowing current to continue through the circuit. That design, combined with the lower failure rate reported by DOE, helps explain why LED sets are generally less likely to go dark because of one failed lamp. It does not mean every LED product is immune to outages or that every failed bulb is user-replaceable.
What this means for maintenance
Follow the instructions supplied with the exact string. Some products permit replacement bulbs or fuses; others require the entire set to be removed from service when damaged. Never assume that a replacement bulb, fuse, connector, or extension arrangement from another set is compatible.
Electricity use and the cost of running your tree
Use the wattage printed on your strings
Find the wattage or amperage on the tag, packaging, or instructions for each string. Two sets with the same length can have very different electrical demands. Add the wattage of all strings that will run at the same time, then calculate energy with this formula:

If a label gives amperes rather than watts, use the manufacturer’s stated wattage when available. Avoid substituting a guessed value; the label for the actual product is the reliable input.
How to interpret DOE’s 2015 example
The Department of Energy’s How Do Holiday Lights Work?, published December 16, 2015, estimated $0.27 for LEDs versus $10 for incandescent lights on a 6-foot tree operated 12 hours each day for 40 days. DOE also stated that LEDs consume 70% less energy than conventional incandescent strands and described them as sturdier and longer-lasting. Treat those numbers as an illustrative scenario from that article, not a current guaranteed saving. A different tree size, schedule, product wattage, electricity rate, or number of strings changes the answer.
When the energy difference matters most
- Daily displays: A tree lit for many hours over several weeks gives lower-wattage LEDs more opportunity to reduce consumption.
- Many strings: On a large tree or room installation, compare the combined labeled wattage rather than the wattage of one strand.
- Short, occasional use: The absolute dollar difference may be smaller when lights run only briefly, so appearance and availability can carry more weight.
- Uncertain estimates: Measure your planned hours and use your utility’s current rate instead of relying on the dated DOE scenario.
Appearance: choose the actual light, not the category name
Neither the DOE nor the Consumer Product Safety Commission establishes a universal appearance winner. LED and incandescent products vary by bulb size, lens shape, color, brightness, spacing, wire color, and whether the bulb is clear or diffused. Even two LED sets can look substantially different.
Match color and brightness to the room
Look at the stated light color and, when possible, a lit sample or an accurate product photograph. Decide whether you want the lights to be the tree’s main visual feature or a softer layer behind ornaments. Brightness and color should be judged alongside the room’s existing lamps and decorations.

Match bulb form and spacing to the tree
Small, closely spaced bulbs can create a fine texture on a compact tree. Larger bulbs or wider spacing can read more clearly across a tall tree or from a distance. Measure branch depth and the visible front, sides, and back before choosing a strand length. The right number of bulbs is a layout decision, not a fixed LED-versus-incandescent rule.
Use a preference test when appearance is the deciding factor
- Place one candidate strand on a small section of the tree or hold it beside the branches.
- View it from the normal seating position and under the room’s usual lighting.
- Check the color, brightness, bulb silhouette, and spacing with your ornaments in place.
- Choose the set whose actual appearance works in the room, even if that means selecting a different technology from the one you initially expected.
Durability, burnout, and repair expectations
DOE reports that LED holiday strings are less likely to burn out or break and describes them as sturdier and longer-lasting than conventional incandescent strands. That is a general comparison, not a guarantee for every model. Manufacturing quality, storage, handling, moisture exposure, connectors, and repeated installation all affect service life.
Inspect before installation
- Look for cracked or missing sockets, damaged insulation, frayed or bare wires, loose connections, and broken bulbs.
- Check the plug, inline controls, fuse compartment, and connectors for damage.
- Discard a damaged set rather than trying to make it safe with tape or an improvised repair.
Store for the next season
After unplugging, let the set cool if the product instructions call for it, then coil it without sharp kinks or crushing the sockets. Keep it dry and protected from rodents and heavy objects. Labeling each set with its location and any replacement bulbs or instructions can prevent unsafe substitutions next year.
Safety is a product-and-setup question
LED technology does not function as a safety certification. The CPSC identifies minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, and overcurrent protection as observable characteristics for seasonal lighting products. A product lacking one or more of those characteristics presents electrical shock or fire risk. Those requirements apply to seasonal lighting generally, regardless of whether the bulbs are LED or incandescent.
Buy safety-tested products
Use lights tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory. Look for the applicable certification marking on the product or packaging and retain the instructions. A certification mark does not remove the need to inspect the set or follow its operating limits.

Inspect every string before plugging it in
- Unplug the set before handling or examining it.
- Check every socket for cracks, looseness, scorching, or missing parts.
- Check the entire cord for frayed, cut, or bare sections.
- Check plugs, inline connectors, and controls for loose or damaged parts.
- Discard the set if you find damage or if you cannot verify that a repair is permitted by the manufacturer.
Confirm the environment rating
Indoor and outdoor ratings are not interchangeable. Outdoor lights should carry certification for outdoor use, and outdoor receptacles should have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection. CPSC recommends plugging outdoor lights into a GFCI-protected receptacle or portable GFCI. Keep every connection and controller positioned as the instructions require, protected from conditions the product is not rated to withstand.
Respect connection and overcurrent limits
Read the maximum number of connectable strings, extension-cord requirements, fuse information, and other limits printed on the set. Do not connect more strings than the manufacturer allows because a plug fits. Overcurrent protection is part of the product’s safety design; bypassing it or installing an unapproved fuse defeats that protection.

A living-room tree used for many hours
Start with LED strings if lower electricity use and fewer expected replacements are priorities. Confirm the color, bulb form, and brightness in the room before buying. Add the labeled wattage of every strand so the operating estimate reflects the whole tree.
A small tree with a carefully controlled look
Appearance may outweigh energy savings when the installation uses only a short strand for limited hours. Compare actual samples or photographs, then choose the set that gives the desired color and spacing. Either technology can work if the set is certified, undamaged, and correctly rated for the location.

LED’s lower reported burnout and breakage rate can reduce the need to replace bulbs after the tree is assembled. Plan the strand layout first, and avoid placing connectors where they will be difficult to inspect or unplug.

An outdoor tree, porch, or facade
Choose a product explicitly certified for outdoor use, inspect it before installation, and use GFCI protection. The outdoor rating and condition of the complete set matter more than whether the bulbs are LED or incandescent.
A display where operating cost is irrelevant but a specific strand is essential
If a particular incandescent appearance is the reason for the display, compare its labeled wattage with your planned schedule and accept the maintenance implications. Keep spare parts only when the manufacturer identifies them as compatible, and remove any set that becomes damaged.
A practical buying checklist
- Define the space: Measure tree height, approximate circumference, and the path where the cord and plug will run.
- Choose the setting rating: Select an indoor product for indoor use and an outdoor-certified product for outdoor exposure.
- Set the visual target: Compare color, brightness, bulb shape, and spacing on the actual strands.
- Compare labeled wattage: Add the wattage of all planned strings and use your hours and electricity rate for a cost estimate.
- Check safety information: Verify recognized laboratory testing, minimum wire and strain-relief information where provided, overcurrent protection, and the manufacturer’s connection limit.
- Inspect before purchase or installation: Reject packaging or sets with damaged cords, sockets, plugs, bulbs, or connectors.
- Plan maintenance: Confirm whether replacement bulbs or fuses are available and exactly which parts the instructions permit you to replace.
- Buy enough length without overloading: It is safer to plan the layout and use multiple permitted strings than to exceed one product’s connection limit.
Installation and operating procedure
- Test the receptacle: For an outdoor setup, verify that the receptacle is GFCI-protected before connecting the lights.
- Lay out the strings unplugged: Arrange the order and locations so connectors remain accessible and do not hang under tension.
- Inspect as you unroll: Stop if you find frayed insulation, bare wire, cracked sockets, loose connections, or other damage.
- Connect only within the label’s limits: Follow the stated maximum number of strings and extension-cord instructions.
- Secure without damaging the cord: Use attachment methods that do not pierce, crush, or sharply bend the wire or sockets.
- Power on and observe: Check for flickering, unusual heat, odors, arcing, or a tripped breaker. Unplug immediately if anything appears abnormal.
- Turn off when unattended if instructed: Follow the product instructions for operating hours, timers, and storage.
Troubleshooting without creating a hazard
The entire string is dark
Unplug the set and verify the receptacle, plug, GFCI, and any timer or controller. If the product instructions identify a user-serviceable fuse or bulb, follow that procedure exactly. If they do not, or if the cord and sockets show damage, retire the set instead of opening it or bypassing protection.

Inspect for a loose connection or damaged socket with the set unplugged. Some incandescent designs use shunts, and some LED designs use a different short-circuit path, so failure behavior is not identical across products. Use only replacement bulbs specified for that string; never mix ratings or force a bulb into a socket.
The breaker or GFCI trips
Unplug the lights and remove damaged sets from service. Do not repeatedly reset the protective device while the lights remain connected. Check for moisture, damaged insulation, overloaded connections, or an incompatible outdoor setup, then consult the manufacturer or a qualified electrician if the cause is not clear.
The lights flicker, smell hot, or show discoloration
Switch off and unplug immediately. These are not appearance issues to troubleshoot by adding tape, replacing a fuse with a higher rating, or connecting another strand. Discard the set unless the manufacturer provides a clearly approved remedy.
Bottom-line choice
Choose LED strings when your priorities are lower energy use, long operating schedules, and reduced likelihood of burnout or breakage. Choose an incandescent string only when its particular appearance is worth the higher labeled wattage and greater maintenance exposure. In either case, compare the actual product, verify its indoor or outdoor rating and safety testing, inspect it before use, and follow its connection limits. That process matters more than assuming one technology is automatically safe or visually superior.
