VS Code REST Client lets you write HTTP requests in a .http or .rest file, send them from the editor, and inspect the responses in VS Code. That makes it practical to learn an API by keeping small, related examples together and changing one detail at a time. It is a workflow, not a proven shortcut: the extension’s documentation describes its features, but does not establish that it makes people learn faster.
What you need to get started
- Visual Studio Code.
- The REST Client extension.
- An API endpoint you are allowed to call. Some APIs are public; others require an account, credentials, or an API key.
REST Client sends HTTP requests from VS Code and displays their responses in the editor. Its documentation lists support for .http and .rest files, multiple requests in one file, variables, environments, authentication options, and request history. Microsoft’s guide to discovering APIs and making requests from a VS Code extension also notes that authentication requirements depend on the API.
Make your first request

Install REST Client from the Visual Studio Marketplace.

Create a new file with the
.httpextension, for exampleapi-practice.http. If VS Code does not recognize it as an HTTP file, set the language mode to HTTP.#1 Best Overall

Write one request using an endpoint you have verified is usable. For example, the general shape is:
GET https://api.example.com/itemsReplace the example host and path with an endpoint from the API’s documentation; the example above is a pattern, not a verified live service.

Use the Send Request action shown above the request, or invoke it using the extension’s available shortcut, editor context menu, or command palette. The Marketplace listing documents these ways to send a request.

Read the response in the separate VS Code pane. Check the status, headers, and body. The status helps establish whether the call succeeded; the body shows what data the endpoint returned. The actual response depends on the API and request, so do not assume a particular result from the generic example.

Build understanding by comparing related calls
Once one request works, add a related call to the same file. Separate requests with a line containing three hash characters:
GET https://api.example.com/items
###
GET https://api.example.com/items/123The separator lets REST Client treat each block as a distinct request. Comparing a collection endpoint with a single-item endpoint can make differences in paths and response shapes easier to see while keeping both examples available for reference.

Use the file as a small record of what you are trying to understand. Change one element at a time—such as the path, query string, or header—and send the request again. Record a short comment if it helps explain what changed or what the API’s documentation says a field means. This is a suggested practice based on the extension’s file-based workflow, not a measured learning method.
Use variables when values repeat
REST Client supports custom and environment variables in request URLs, headers, and bodies. Introduce them when a host or another value needs to be reused or changed between calls, rather than adding variable syntax before it solves a real problem. For example, the pattern below uses a named host value:

GET {{host}}/itemsFor environment-specific values, REST Client provides environment support. The extension’s current Marketplace documentation describes environments and custom variables; consult it for current configuration details, since settings and behavior can change.

Use a prior response only when the API flow requires it
The project README documents request variables that can refer to parts of a previous response in the same file. This can help represent a sequence in which one call returns a value needed by another, such as an identifier. Check the README for the current syntax and limitations before using response-derived values.
Follow the API’s authentication instructions
Do not guess an authentication scheme. Check the API provider’s documentation to determine whether a key, token, or other credential is required and how it should be sent. REST Client lists authentication options, but that does not mean every API accepts the same method.
A shared practice file should not expose credentials. The older Microsoft TechCommunity article on REST Client discusses environment-level variables as one way to avoid checking secrets into source control. Treat its configuration guidance as dated and confirm current extension documentation before applying it. Never commit an actual secret in a file that will be shared or stored in source control.
Keep the practice file useful
- Keep examples focused on one API or one learning question so the file remains easy to scan.
- Use
###to separate calls, and give each request enough context to understand why it is there. - Use variables for repeated or environment-dependent values, not for every value by default.
- Keep credentials out of shared files and follow both the API provider’s security guidance and current REST Client documentation.
- Revisit requests when the API or extension changes; a saved request is a useful reference, not a guarantee that an endpoint remains available.
What this workflow can and cannot establish
REST Client provides a compact way to send calls and view responses without leaving VS Code, while keeping requests as editable text files. That supports a repeatable way to explore endpoints and compare results. The extension documentation and Microsoft guidance cited here do not provide a study, statistic, or measured outcome showing that this approach improves API-learning speed or skill gains.
