They are not necessarily the same. The live patch is the version ordinary players receive on Riot’s regular game service. A tournament (or competitive) patch is the version specified by the rules of a particular league or event. It may trail the live version, use a designated championship build, or follow event-specific restrictions.
For 2026, Riot’s patch index lists Patch 26.20, dated October 6, as the Worlds patch. That label does not, by itself, prove that every 2026 Worlds match used 26.20 or that the event could not change versions during play. The event’s current ruleset remains the authority for those details.
Live patch and tournament patch: the short answer
The live patch is the current production version available to regular League of Legends players. It contains the latest balance changes, bug fixes, system updates and content that Riot has released to the live game.

The tournament patch is a competition-controlled version. A league, tournament organizer or Riot competitive-operations rulebook determines which build is legal for official matches. Because competitive play needs a stable environment for practice, scheduling and fairness, the approved version can differ from the one running in ranked, normal and other public queues.

There is no current, universal rule that every tournament is exactly one week behind live. A 2020 LCS rule set used a one-calendar-week delay as a guideline, but that was an LCS-specific rule from 2020, not a permanent policy for every league. Current event rules can set different dates, restrictions or patch procedures.
How the two versions differ
| Question | Live patch | Tournament patch |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls it? | Riot’s normal game-release process and patch notes | The relevant league, tournament organizer or Riot competitive-operations rules |
| Who plays on it? | Players in public game modes, including ranked | Teams and players in official matches |
| How is it identified? | Riot’s full version notation, such as YEAR.PATCH-NUMBER | The exact version named or permitted by the event rules |
| When does it change? | According to Riot’s published release schedule, subject to operational changes | According to the competition’s calendar and stability requirements |
| What else can apply? | Normal live-game champion, item and system availability | Event-specific champion eligibility, disabled content, emergency procedures or other restrictions |
For any comparison, record the complete version rather than saying “the latest patch.” Riot’s current format is YEAR.PATCH-NUMBER; the year and patch number together identify the release. Riot explains the format and planned dates on its 2026 patch schedule.
What “live,” “competitive” and “Worlds” patch actually mean
These labels describe different kinds of authority, not three separate games. “Live” refers to Riot’s public release. “Competitive” refers to the build an event has selected for official play. “Worlds patch” is Riot’s description of a release intended for the World Championship environment; it is still necessary to consult the World Championship rules for the legal match conditions.
A patch-notes page tells you what Riot shipped and when. It does not automatically tell you whether a league adopted that build, whether a stage was frozen on an earlier build, or whether content was disabled. Conversely, an event rulebook can identify the legal build and restrictions without replacing the technical details in Riot’s patch notes. Treat the two documents as complementary.
Why tournaments may lag behind the live game
Competitive integrity and preparation
Professional teams build strategies, practice drafts and prepare champion pools around a known ruleset. Switching immediately whenever a public patch ships can leave teams with little preparation time and can make a series depend on who adapts fastest rather than who prepared best. A competition may therefore select a build that has already been tested in scrims and on the tournament server.
Scheduling and playoff stability
A live patch can arrive in the middle of a league week or a playoff round. Tournament administrators may hold the competitive version steady until a stage, match week or round is complete. The exact trigger is set by the event rules, not by a universal Riot offset.
The historical LCS wording illustrates this operational concern. Section 10.4.1 of the 2020 LCS Rule Set said a patch would not be implemented if a week of games or a playoff round had already started. That kind of calendar safeguard explains why counting seven days from a public release can produce the wrong answer for a particular match.
Pro-focused balance work
Riot sometimes makes changes specifically with professional play in mind. The Patch 26.19 notes, published September 22, 2026, describe pro-focused Summoner’s Rift changes ahead of Worlds. Such a patch can be intended to shape the championship environment while still accounting for the broader player base.

Riot’s Patch 25.20 notes called that release the official patch of the 2025 League of Legends World Championship and explained that its balancing considered both professional players and regular players. That example shows why a “Worlds patch” is a deliberate competitive target, not merely whatever build happens to be newest on the day a match is played.
Is a tournament patch always one week behind?
No. The one-week figure comes from a historical rule, not a current all-leagues formula. Section 10.4.1 of Riot’s 2020 LCS Rule Set said, “As a guideline, the competitive patch will be updated a full calendar week after its release onto the live server.” The same section said a patch would not be implemented if a week of games or a playoff round had already started, and that competitive-patch changes remained at the league’s discretion.
That wording matters in three ways:
- It was written for the LCS and dated 2020.
- It described a guideline, not an unconditional mathematical offset.
- It allowed scheduling and league discretion to override a simple seven-day calculation.
Other competitions can choose a different delay, designate a specific championship patch, freeze a version for a stage, or publish procedures for emergency changes. To answer “how far behind?” for a particular event, use that event’s current rules rather than counting backward from the public patch date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat patch is Worlds played on?
Riot’s official patch-notes index identifies Patch 26.20 as the Worlds patch dated October 6, 2026. That is the clearest official release-level reference for the 2026 championship environment.
It is not enough to infer every match detail from the index entry. The available information does not establish whether all 2026 Worlds matches use 26.20, whether the event permits a mid-event version change, or which champions and content are restricted. Riot’s Competitive Operations rules library lists the current global and event-specific rulesets, including the 2026 World Championship ruleset. Read the applicable ruleset for the definitive answer before treating a match, draft or statistic as a 26.20 result.
For the official release listing, consult Riot’s patch-notes index. For legal match conditions, consult the competition rules. These are related but separate sources: the patch notes explain what Riot changed; the rules say what the event allows.
How patch numbers and dates should be recorded
Use the full YEAR.PATCH-NUMBER notation, such as 26.20 or 25.20, and attach the publication date. A yearless description such as “Patch 20” is ambiguous, while “the latest patch” becomes stale as soon as another release ships.

Why professional games can look different from ranked games
Champion priority is version-dependent
A champion that is highly contested in a professional draft may be weaker, stronger or unchanged on your live client. The professional match may be using an earlier build, a championship build or a ruleset that excludes particular content. Copying a pro pick without checking the version can therefore produce misleading expectations in ranked play.
Items, runes and systems can shift
Even when the champion roster is identical, item costs, stats, objective rules, map systems and rune interactions can change between builds. A strategy that depends on a particular breakpoint or interaction must be matched to the exact patch number before you test it.
Professional balance goals are not ranked guarantees
Pro-focused changes are aimed at a different environment: coordinated teams, practiced drafts and a much smaller champion pool than the average public queue. A change intended to reduce a professional outlier does not guarantee that the champion will move by the same amount in solo queue. Treat pro results as evidence about that competitive ruleset, not as a direct forecast of your next ranked game.
Draft and format are additional variables
Patch is only one explanation for a different result. Teams select champions for a composition, lane assignment, communication plan and opponent-specific matchup. A pick can be valuable as a narrow counter, engage tool or flex option even when it is not a reliable blind pick for a solo player. Separate the version question from the strategic context before judging whether a professional build transfers to ranked.
How to verify the patch for a match, guide or replay
- Identify the competition and stage. Write down the league or tournament, season, stage and match date. A regular-season rule can differ from a playoff or championship rule.
- Check Riot’s patch index. Open the official patch-notes index and find the release date and full YEAR.PATCH-NUMBER. Do not rely on a headline that says only “the latest patch.”
- Read the event ruleset. Use the Competitive Operations library and open the rules for the exact event. Look for the competitive version, effective date, stage-specific exceptions, disabled champions or items, and emergency-change language.
- Compare the two dates. A live release date tells you when the public client changed. The event rule tells you when the tournament build became legal. They may be the same, or they may not.
- Check the match record or broadcast information. If a match page, broadcast graphic or official recap identifies the version, compare it with the ruleset. If the sources conflict, treat the event rule or an official organizer clarification as controlling.
- Record restrictions separately. “Played on patch 26.20” does not automatically mean every champion, skin, item or feature was eligible. Keep version and eligibility as separate fields in your notes.
- Preserve the date you verified it. Rules pages and patch indexes can be updated. Note when you checked them so an old guide does not appear to describe a later event.
How to compare a pro strategy with your live game
Start with the exact patch
Locate the full patch number for the professional game and the full patch number on your client. If they differ, read both sets of notes for champion, item, rune, objective and system changes that affect the strategy.
Separate draft context from mechanical strength
Professional picks are shaped by team composition, lane assignments, communication and opponent preparation. A champion can be selected for a narrow matchup or a reliable engage tool even if it is not a strong blind pick in ordinary ranked games. Do not attribute the entire result to the patch alone.
Rebuild the setup on your version
Check the champion’s current abilities, recommended items, runes and summoner spells. A build order shown in a tournament broadcast may reference values that changed before your queue opened. If an item or rune no longer exists, substitute only after checking the current notes and the strategy’s purpose.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: assuming “Worlds patch” means every match is confirmed
A patch index label identifies Riot’s intended championship release. It does not replace the event’s detailed rules. Verify the 2026 World Championship ruleset before making a claim about every match or draft.
Mistake: turning the 2020 LCS guideline into a universal rule
The full-calendar-week language belongs to the 2020 LCS rules. Quote it with that league and year attached, and do not present it as the current policy for all competitions.
Mistake: comparing only champion names
Two games can feature the same champions while differing in item stats, runes, map systems, objective rules or disabled content. Compare the complete version and restrictions.

That phrase becomes ambiguous as soon as Riot ships another release. State the full YEAR.PATCH-NUMBER, publication date and the region or event scope when relevant.
Mistake: treating a pro win rate as a ranked prediction
Professional sample sizes, drafts and team coordination differ from public queues. A tournament result describes performance under that event’s conditions; it does not establish an identical result for ordinary players.
Mistake: assuming a patch number answers eligibility questions
A legal version and a legal content list are separate facts. An event can use a named patch while restricting a champion, item or feature, so never infer eligibility solely from the number shown on a broadcast.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when your client and a tournament broadcast disagree
- Confirm the client’s version: check the in-client patch information and Riot’s current notes rather than relying on a remembered number.
- Confirm the broadcast date: an older replay may show a build that was live only briefly or was already replaced for public play.
- Check the event stage: regular season, playoffs and international events can follow different patch procedures.
- Look for a rule-based exception: the event may have frozen the version, disabled content or authorized an emergency change.
- Compare official wording: distinguish a patch index label, a rulebook clause and a broadcast graphic; they do not carry the same authority.
- Do not force a conclusion from missing information: if no official source identifies the exact match build, describe the version as unconfirmed instead of guessing.
A practical checklist for writers, coaches and players
- Use the complete YEAR.PATCH-NUMBER.
- Attach every date to its region, league, event or stage.
- Link public-release claims to Riot’s patch notes or schedule.
- Link legality, restrictions and timing claims to the event ruleset.
- Label historical rules as historical and league-specific.
- Distinguish a championship patch designation from proof of the version used in every match.
- Check champion, item, rune and system changes before transferring a pro build to ranked.
- State uncertainty plainly when the official rules do not establish an exact match condition.
- Keep the competitive version and content restrictions in separate notes.
- Recheck links and dates when updating an evergreen guide.
Bottom line for players
Think of the live patch as the public game and the tournament patch as the event’s controlled competitive environment. They can match, but they do not have to. Riot’s 2026 index names Patch 26.20 as the Worlds patch, while the exact version, restrictions and any in-event changes must come from the current World Championship ruleset. When a professional match looks different from your ranked game, check the full patch number first, then check the event rules before drawing conclusions about balance or strategy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the tournament patch the same as the live patch?
Sometimes, but not automatically. The live patch is Riot’s public release; the tournament patch is the version authorized by the specific competition. The event rules determine whether they match.

Why are pros playing a different patch?
A competition may hold a stable version so teams have preparation time and a stage is not disrupted by a mid-week release. Riot may also designate a championship or pro-focused patch.
How far behind is the competitive patch?
There is no universal current delay. A 2020 LCS rule used a full calendar week as a guideline, with exceptions for an ongoing game week or playoff round. Other events can use different timing.
What patch is Worlds played on in 2026?
Riot’s patch index lists Patch 26.20, dated October 6, 2026, as the Worlds patch. Confirm the exact version used in each match and any restrictions in the current 2026 World Championship ruleset.
Does a Worlds patch make a champion legal?
No. The patch number identifies a software version, while the event rules can separately restrict champions, items, skins or features.
Can a tournament change patches during the event?
That depends on the event rules. Check for stage-specific timing, freeze provisions and emergency-change language rather than assuming a mid-event change is either required or forbidden.
How should I copy a professional build into ranked?
First compare the exact tournament and live patch. Then check champion, item, rune, objective and system changes, and account for the professional draft and team context before testing the underlying strategy.
Where can I verify the official version?
Use Riot’s patch-notes index for the public release and the Riot Competitive Operations library for the event’s legal version, restrictions and procedures.
