Riot Games will end the current run of League of Legends Classic on January 6, 2027, after Season 3 Act II. The October 14, 2026 announcement describes the move as a response to players returning to modern League modes; Riot said, “At this point though, most have gone back to other parts of League.” Classic remains playable until the deadline, but access is already being reduced in several regions.
When is League Classic shutting down?
Riot’s announcement uses the broader wording “January 2027,” while Riot Support specifies the final availability date as January 6, 2027. That date is the practical deadline for Classic progression, matchmaking and other systems that depend on the mode. The current run lasts through the end of Season 3 Act II.
Riot has not published a player-count threshold or independent population data for the decision. Its stated reason is qualitative: migration back to other League modes has left Classic with long queues and large matchmaking-rating (MMR) discrepancies.

Windowed queues mean matchmaking is available only during scheduled periods rather than continuously. If your region is JP1 or ME1, use a custom lobby; ordinary matchmaking is no longer offered there. Custom games are the most consistent way to play with a group in every region while the mode remains online.
What happens to Classic progression and purchases?
Spend Pass Coins before the deadline
Riot Support advises players to use all Classic Pass Coins before January 6. Do not assume unused coins will transfer to standard League or remain redeemable after Classic closes; the support guidance specifically tells players to spend them during the remaining availability window.

Level the separate Classic account
Classic progression is independent of your standard League level. Every Classic account starts at Level 0 and can advance to Level 30. The system includes Classic missions and XP, Masteries, Runes, Influence Points, Blue Essence, Rune Pages, cosmetic rewards and a Summoner’s Journey that unlocks at Classic Level 10. If you want those unlocks, complete missions and earn XP before the account track is retired.

Refunds for unusable Classic content
Riot says it will issue refunds for Classic-specific content that will no longer be usable. The announcement does not provide a universal refund amount or a separate claim procedure in the available details, so keep an eye on Riot’s account or support communications for eligibility and timing. Content that also works in standard League should not be presumed to qualify merely because it was obtained while playing Classic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is Riot ending Classic?
Riot attributes the shutdown to migration: most Classic players have returned to other parts of League. The resulting smaller and more uneven population creates practical matchmaking problems, including long waits and substantial MMR gaps. Riot has not quantified how many players remain, so the explanation establishes the direction of the population change rather than a precise size or financial threshold.

The regional queue changes are an operational response to that same issue. Keeping matchmaking open everywhere would make waits and skill mismatches worse; windowed schedules concentrate players into periods when matches are more likely to form. Custom games remain open because they do not require a large, continuously populated matchmaking pool.
Will League Classic come back?
Possibly, but there is no confirmed date or promise of a permanent relaunch. Riot wrote: “Our goal is to bring Classic back in the future, likely as an event mode with adjustments and additions.” That wording describes an intention, not a scheduled continuation.
Riot also plans to discuss what it learned: which parts of Classic worked, where the experience could have been more faithful to the original and where adhering too closely to the past limited the mode. A future event could therefore differ in rules, content or availability from the current version. Until Riot announces dates and specifications, January 6, 2027 remains the end of the present run.
