CFM tells you how much air a leaf blower moves; MPH tells you how fast that air exits the nozzle. Neither rating is a complete measure of cleanup performance. In practice, air volume helps sweep loose material across a broad area, while air speed can help lift or loosen wet, matted, or stuck debris. The most useful comparison considers both ratings together, then checks the nozzle, operating mode, surface, power source, weight, and runtime.

Use the ratings as task clues rather than promises. A headline CFM or MPH figure can represent a particular nozzle, mode, measurement location, or peak setting, so two numbers printed on different product pages are not automatically an apples-to-apples test.

CFM: the amount of air the blower moves

CFM stands for cubic feet per minute. It describes the volume of air a blower can move in one minute. Think of CFM as the size or breadth of the moving air stream available to push material. More usable volume can help gather a larger layer of dry leaves or clear a wider strip with fewer passes.

CFM is not a direct measurement of motor power, and a larger number does not guarantee better results on every surface. Air volume reaches the ground through a nozzle and under a particular operating condition. A narrow nozzle can concentrate the stream differently from a wide nozzle, and the blower’s mode can change the advertised output.

When air volume matters most

  • Large lawns, driveways, or patios covered with a broad layer of loose, dry leaves.
  • Moving material into a pile after it has already been loosened.
  • Clearing a large area where coverage and fewer passes matter more than breaking a single stuck clump.

These are practical tendencies, not guaranteed thresholds. Leaf depth, moisture, wind, slope, nozzle design, and the surface underneath all affect what a given CFM figure can accomplish.

MPH: the speed of the exiting air

MPH stands for miles per hour and describes how fast air leaves the blower. Troy-Bilt explains it this way: “Miles per hour is a measurement of how fast air comes out of the leaf blower, and is more helpful for moving heavier debris.” A faster jet can be useful when leaves are wet, packed together, lodged in grass, or caught in cracks.

MPH is also not a stand-alone power score. Speed is measured at a particular point in the air stream. The value at a nozzle outlet does not tell you how much air is surrounding that jet or how effectively the stream will cover an entire yard. A very fast, narrow stream may loosen a stubborn spot but require more passes to move a large area.

When air speed matters most

  • Wet leaves that cling to pavement or lawn.
  • Matted layers that need to be broken apart before they can be swept.
  • Small piles, corners, joints, and cracks where a concentrated stream is useful.
  • Heavier debris that does not respond to a broad, low-speed flow.

Why CFM and MPH must be read together

CFM and MPH describe different properties of the same air stream: volume and velocity. Neither one alone answers “How well will this clear my yard?” A useful blower needs enough volume to move the amount of material in front of it and enough speed to loosen material that is stuck. Toro summarizes the distinction in its electric-leaf-blower FAQ: “CFM (cubic feet per minute) measures the volume of air a blower moves, while MPH (miles per hour) measures how fast that air travels.”

For broad clearing of dry material, give more attention to usable air volume. For wet, matted, or lodged debris, air speed becomes more important. That guidance does not establish a universal “good” CFM or MPH number because the same rating can behave differently with another nozzle, mode, surface, or operating technique.

Task-based comparison

Job Rating to watch first Why Important conditions
Dry leaves over a large lawn CFM, then MPH More volume can cover a wider area and move a broad layer toward a pile. Leaf depth, wind, nozzle width, and battery state affect usable output.
Wet or matted leaves MPH, while checking CFM Higher air speed can help break the material loose; volume is still needed to carry it away. Moisture, grass height, and the distance from nozzle to surface matter.
Debris in cracks and corners MPH and nozzle design A concentrated, fast stream can dislodge material in a confined spot. A narrow tube may reduce the area covered per pass.
Long-distance piling CFM and MPH together The stream must both move enough material and maintain momentum as the pile grows. Terrain, wind direction, and the chosen operating mode can change results.

A real specification example: Toro’s paired ratings

Toro’s 60V product listings illustrate why both figures belong in a comparison. One model is listed at 605 CFM and 120 MPH; another is listed at 900 CFM and 165 MPH. These are manufacturer specifications, with no publication date stated on the search result and accessed in 2026. They demonstrate the relationship between volume and speed, not an independent test or a controlled comparison across gas and electric blowers.

Manufacturer-listed configuration CFM MPH How to interpret it
Toro 60V leaf blower example 1 605 120 Manufacturer specification; publication date not stated on the search result.
Toro 60V leaf blower example 2 900 165 Manufacturer specification; publication date not stated on the search result.

The second listing has both a higher volume figure and a higher speed figure, but that does not tell you how either product performs on your property. Confirm the live product page, the nozzle used for the rating, and whether the number is tied to a turbo or other temporary mode before treating it as an everyday expectation.

Why headline ratings are difficult to compare

Published CFM and MPH numbers carry measurement context. AM Leonard’s 2026 explainer notes that a CFM figure can depend on where the volume was measured and whether a common testing standard applies. This is a caution to check methodology, not proof that every manufacturer uses an incompatible method.

Measurement location

A value measured at the blower housing, at the end of a tube, or with a particular attachment can represent different airflow conditions. Read the specification notes for the exact measurement point. If a page gives one figure without saying where or how it was measured, treat comparisons with other brands as approximate.

Nozzle and product configuration

Round tubes, flat concentrators, extension tubes, and other attachments alter the shape and concentration of the stream. A product page may quote a rating for one included nozzle while your intended task uses another. Compare like configurations whenever the manufacturer identifies them.

Operating mode and peak output

Variable-speed triggers, eco settings, and turbo buttons can produce different outputs. A peak or turbo rating should not be treated as sustained everyday output unless the manufacturer says it is. Turbo use can also change battery runtime or fuel consumption, so include the operating mode when comparing cordless and gas equipment.

Standards context

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute lists ANSI/OPEI B175.2–2012 (R2019), covering gasoline-powered handheld and backpack blowers and blower-vacuums. The listing includes safety requirements and performance-testing procedures and says a revision project is in progress. Its stated scope is gasoline equipment; the listing alone does not establish that the same procedure governs electric blowers or every cross-brand CFM and MPH claim.

How to compare leaf blowers step by step

  1. Describe the work. Note the total area, typical leaf depth, whether debris is dry or wet, and whether it is loose, matted, or lodged in cracks.
  2. Record both ratings. Write down CFM and MPH from the same product configuration. Do not rank a model using only its larger number.
  3. Read the measurement notes. Look for the nozzle, tube, measurement location, operating mode, and whether the figure is maximum, rated, or turbo output.
  4. Check the physical design. A handheld model may suit short jobs; a backpack design can distribute weight for longer clearing. Consider balance and controls, not just the specification panel.
  5. Match the power source to the job. For cordless models, check the stated runtime conditions and the battery size. For gas models, account for refueling, starting, fuel storage, and maintenance.
  6. Verify what is in the box. Confirm whether the advertised package includes the battery and charger. Bundles differ, and a blower price without those items may not be the price of a ready-to-use setup.
  7. Check the surface and neighbors. Hard pavement, grass, gravel, garden beds, slopes, and nearby structures each change how close you can work and where debris can be directed.
  8. Choose the least output that completes the task safely. Excessive speed can scatter material into beds, roads, or neighboring property. Use the variable trigger or lower mode when precision matters.

Shopping factors beyond CFM and MPH

Yard size and debris pattern

Manufacturer guidance identifies yard size, debris, and ease of use as selection factors. A small property with occasional dry leaves may favor a lighter, simpler handheld unit. A large lot with repeated heavy buildup may justify a design that is easier to carry for extended periods and has enough sustained output for the area.

Form factor, weight, and balance

Compare the blower’s bare weight and ready-to-use weight with its battery or fuel installed. A high-output unit that is tiring to hold can reduce real productivity. Check handle position, shoulder support, trigger reach, and whether the tube points naturally at the ground.

Power source, runtime, and refueling

Cordless equipment trades fuel handling for battery planning. Runtime depends on battery capacity, selected mode, temperature, debris, and trigger use; a maximum-mode figure is not automatically a full-yard runtime. Gas equipment avoids charging pauses but requires fuel, starting procedures, ventilation, and maintenance. Compare the complete operating routine rather than assuming either source is universally better.

Technique can matter as much as the numbers

Hold the tube low enough to let the stream slide under leaves, but not so close that it simply pins material to the ground. Start at the outer edge of a lawn or driveway and work in a consistent direction toward a collection area. For a wet mat, use short passes to open a gap, then use the broader part of the stream to move the loosened material.

Work with the wind when possible and avoid directing debris toward traffic, open windows, water, or delicate plants. On gravel or mulch, raise the nozzle and reduce speed to avoid displacing the surface. These techniques do not change the published rating; they determine how much of that rated airflow reaches the material you want to move.

Common rating mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing the highest MPH alone

A high speed can loosen a stubborn patch, but without enough volume it may not carry a large amount of debris efficiently. Check CFM and the nozzle configuration before deciding that the fastest number is the best choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the highest CFM alone

A large volume figure can help with broad coverage, yet wet or lodged leaves may remain attached if the stream lacks useful speed at the surface. Consider the debris condition and the operating mode that produces the quoted CFM.

Comparing peak figures as if they were continuous

Turbo and maximum settings can be temporary. Ask whether the manufacturer identifies the figure as peak, and consider the battery or fuel cost of maintaining that mode.

Assuming all brands measure identically

Measurement location, nozzle, and standards coverage can differ. The gasoline-focused ANSI/OPEI listing should not be extended automatically to electric products. Use each manufacturer’s notes and compare complete configurations.

Ignoring the package and operating burden

A blower that meets the ratings may still be inconvenient if its battery, charger, fuel process, runtime, weight, or controls do not fit your routine. Evaluate the complete setup you will actually use.

Quick decisions for common situations

  • Mostly dry leaves over open space: prioritize sufficient CFM for area coverage, then verify that MPH and the nozzle can gather the material into a pile.
  • Frequent rain or heavy, matted leaves: look for a balanced specification with useful MPH and enough CFM to carry loosened debris away.
  • Small paved area and tight corners: a controllable trigger and concentrated nozzle may matter more than the largest headline CFM.
  • Long sessions or a large property: weigh backpack or well-balanced designs, sustained-mode runtime or refueling needs, and the ready-to-use weight.
  • Unclear product page: treat the rating as incomplete until you can identify the measurement conditions, mode, nozzle, and included battery or charger.

Bottom line: which rating is more important?

Neither CFM nor MPH is universally more important. CFM is the volume of air available to move material across an area; MPH is the speed that can help lift or loosen material that is stuck. For dry, loose leaves, start with the volume needed for your yard. For wet, matted, or lodged debris, give additional attention to air speed. Then compare both figures under the same configuration and confirm the power source, weight, runtime or refueling, and bundle contents.
