Yes—keep mowing in October while your grass is still growing and the ground is firm. Mild autumn weather can keep a lawn active, but October mowing should be gentler than summer mowing: raise the cutting height, remove no more than one-third of the blade, clear leaves and stop whenever frost or saturated soil makes the lawn vulnerable.
Why October mowing can still be necessary
Grass does not stop growing simply because the calendar reaches autumn. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) advises mowing when necessary in mild weather because grass continues to grow above 7°C. Tom’s Guide likewise reported in 2026 that gardeners should continue mowing through October while mild fall temperatures allow growth.
Leaving actively growing grass uncut can produce a long, floppy canopy that mats down in wet weather. The aim is not to maintain a short summer lawn indefinitely; it is to remove only enough growth to keep the turf upright and healthy until cold weather brings growth to a natural stop.
Use an autumn cutting height, not a summer scalping
Set the mower slightly higher
The RHS gives an ordinary domestic lawn a target of about 4 cm in spring and autumn. That is guidance, not a universal specification: grass species, shade, soil, climate and the finish you want all affect the best height. If your mower has several settings, move up one notch from your summer setting rather than cutting aggressively.

Follow the one-third rule
Never remove more than one-third of the grass height in one pass. If the lawn has become too long, raise the deck and make a second cut several days later instead of trying to reach the final height immediately. Removing more at once can stress the plants and leave heavy clippings that smother the surface.
When to mow—and when to wait

There is no reliable universal “last mowing date.” Local temperature, rainfall, lawn exposure and the first frosts matter more than a fixed date on the calendar. Check the lawn itself before every cut.

A practical October mowing routine
- Inspect the forecast and surface. Choose a mild, dry window. Do not mow frost-covered, waterlogged or visibly soft ground.
- Clear obstacles and leaves. Pick up branches, toys and stones. Remove a thick layer of leaves before mowing so the deck and discharge chute do not clog.
- Raise the cutting deck. Use a slightly higher setting than in summer, with the RHS’s roughly 4 cm autumn reference point in mind.
- Cut only the growth you need to remove. Keep the one-third limit; make a later pass if the lawn is substantially overgrown.
- Vary your direction. Alternating mowing lines reduces the risk of repeatedly pressing the same tracks into soft autumn soil.
- Check the finish. Clumps indicate excessive growth, blunt blades or damp conditions. Spread light clippings or collect them rather than leaving piles on the turf.
How to deal with autumn leaves
Fallen leaves block light and can smother grass if they remain wet on the lawn. Rake small areas, especially around beds and narrow paths. On a larger lawn, a battery leaf blower can speed the work; the RHS describes battery models as quieter and better for air quality than petrol blowers.
Can you mulch leaves with the mower?
Yes, if the layer is light and dry, your mower is designed for mulching, and the chopped material disappears into the canopy rather than forming a blanket. Make several shallow passes instead of attempting to shred a deep, wet layer. Collect leaves when they are thick, soggy or covering most of the grass; compost them or use them as a separate leaf-mould material.

Choosing equipment for autumn conditions

Whichever equipment you use, keep mower blades sharp, empty the collection bag before it becomes overloaded and clean damp debris from the underside only with the machine isolated according to its manual.

Make the final cut when growth has clearly slowed and the weather no longer provides a dry, frost-free opportunity—not because October has ended. Keep the autumn height rather than cutting the lawn extremely short for winter. A modestly taller canopy protects the growing points, while a scalped lawn is more exposed to cold and wear.

If frost arrives early, stop immediately and wait for conditions to improve. If mild weather returns and the grass resumes growth, one more careful cut may be appropriate. The condition of the turf is the deciding signal.
