Short answer: A lava fountain is a gas-driven jet of molten lava thrown into the air, while a lava flow is molten rock moving across the ground. They can occur together: a flank fountain may feed a downslope flow. Fountains mainly add airborne hazards—falling tephra and volcanic gases—while flows threaten by burning, burying, engulfing and destabilizing the ground along their path. Neither phenomenon is safe to approach without current official information and an authorization to enter the area.

What is the difference between a lava fountain and a lava flow?

The difference is primarily one of movement. A fountain sends lava upward through the air; a flow carries lava laterally or downslope over the ground. Both are ways magma behaves after it reaches the surface, but the forces, travel paths and immediate hazards differ.

Lava fountain: a gas-propelled jet

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) defines a lava fountain as a jet sprayed into the air by the rapid formation and expansion of gas bubbles in molten rock. As magma rises, pressure falls and dissolved gases form bubbles. If gas cannot escape quickly enough, the expanding bubbles propel a mixture of liquid lava, gas and fragments above the vent. A fountain can be continuous, pulsing or episodic, and its height can change as gas content and eruption rate change.

The USGS Volcano Hazards Program Glossary gives a typical fountain height of about 10 to 100 meters, with occasional fountains above 500 meters. Those are broad descriptive ranges, not a forecast for a particular eruption. Wind, vent geometry and the amount of gas released determine where fragments and gases go after they leave the fountain.

Lava flow: molten rock moving over ground

A lava flow is a stream of molten rock that erupts relatively non-explosively and moves downslope until it cools and solidifies. Gravity drives the movement, while the lava’s temperature, viscosity, supply rate and the shape of the terrain determine its route. A flow may spread as a thin sheet, stay confined in a channel, or travel inside a lava tube that later emerges farther downslope.

Flows are not necessarily quiet at their source. A vigorous fountain can pour lava onto the ground faster than it can drain away, creating a flow. Conversely, a flow may continue after fountaining weakens if lava stored in channels or tubes keeps moving.

How the two processes are connected

Fountains and flows are separate phenomena, but an eruption can produce both at once. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) explains that flank fountains can feed lava flows that travel downslope. In this setting, the fountain is the airborne source and the flow is the ground-hugging continuation.

From vent to flow

  1. Gas expansion drives the fountain. Bubbles forming and expanding in rising magma propel lava above the vent.
  2. Lava lands around the vent. Drops and clots that remain molten accumulate in a spatter rampart, cone or pond.
  3. Gravity routes the overflow. If the supply exceeds the ability of the vent area to contain it, lava spills into channels or sheets and moves downslope.
  4. Cooling changes the pathway. A solid crust can insulate a tube, allowing hotter lava to travel beneath the surface, while blockages can redirect a channel.

This connection is why observing a fountain from a distance does not reveal the full hazard area. The airborne column may be near the vent, but the lava it supplies can follow terrain into a different drainage or community.

Comparison at a glance

Comparison Lava fountain Lava flow
Where lava moves Upward and outward through the air Across the ground, usually downslope
Primary driving process Rapid expansion of gas bubbles in magma Effusion, gravity, slope and lava supply
Typical material hazard Falling tephra, spatter and larger fragments Molten or hot rock engulfing, burning and burying objects
Atmospheric hazard Volcanic gases and downwind vog or other air pollution Gas may be released from the flow; additional hazards occur where lava meets water
Main geographic control Fountain height, vent location and wind direction and speed Lava viscosity, slope, topography, channel or tube formation and supply rate
How speed is described Vertical jet height and fragment trajectory are more useful than a single ground speed Can range from very slow to fast on steep slopes; a general USGS example is less than 1 mile per hour on gentle slopes and up to 30 miles per hour on steep slopes

Values in the table are general descriptions. Local conditions, eruption style and official observations always take precedence over a generic range.

What hazards do lava fountains and lava flows pose?

The hazard pathway differs: fountains put material and gas into the atmosphere, whereas flows concentrate heat and physical destruction along a moving route. A single eruption can expose people to both sets of hazards.

Lava-fountain hazards

Tephra, spatter and ballistic fragments

Fountaining throws volcanic material into the air. Large, dense pieces generally fall close to the vent, where they can strike people, damage structures or ignite combustible material. Smaller fragments and ash-sized particles can remain airborne longer and be transported downwind. Fallout can make roads slippery, contaminate water catchments, abrade equipment and irritate eyes and airways.

HVO notes that changing wind direction and speed can shift fallout toward nearby communities. A location that is upwind during one pulse may be downwind during the next. The absence of visible ash at one moment therefore does not establish that the area will remain clear.

Volcanic gases and vog

Fountaining is associated with increased volcanic-gas emissions. Sulfur dioxide and other gases can irritate the eyes and respiratory system and can react in the atmosphere to form volcanic air pollution, commonly called vog in Hawaiʻi. Downwind concentrations depend on emission rate, wind, atmospheric stability and distance from the vent. People with asthma or other respiratory conditions may be especially sensitive, but anyone can be affected by high concentrations.

Heat, noise and unstable vent areas

Near a fountain, radiant heat can cause burns and dehydrate people rapidly. Explosive bursts, rock impacts and uneven freshly deposited spatter make footing unreliable. A vent area can also change without warning as a fissure opens, a cone collapses or a channel breaches. These are reasons official closures normally include broad buffers rather than a line immediately around the visible jet.

Flows fed by a fountain

The HVO summary of fountain hazards explicitly includes lava flows. A fountain on a volcano’s flank can supply lava that travels into valleys, across roads or around obstacles. Treat the downstream area as part of the fountain’s hazard system, not as a separate, harmless zone.

Lava-flow hazards

Burning, burial and structural destruction

Lava flows can surround, burn, bury or carry away objects and infrastructure. The USGS states that lava flows typically move slowly enough to outrun, but they destroy everything in their path. That statement describes the physical destructiveness of a flow, not permission to approach it. A person who enters a channel, stands on an island of land or waits too long to retreat can lose the route needed to escape.

Homes, utilities, roads, vegetation and agricultural land can be covered by meters of rock. Even where a flow stops short of a structure, radiant heat can ignite materials, and hot crust can collapse beneath a person or vehicle.

Speed is controlled by several variables

There is no universal lava-flow speed. USGS identifies lava type and viscosity, slope, whether the flow moves as a sheet, channel or tube, and the rate of lava production as key controls. A USGS fact sheet gives a broad example of less than 1 mile per hour on gentle slopes and as fast as 30 miles per hour on steep slopes. These figures illustrate possible behavior across settings; they do not predict the speed of a named flow or show that a particular observer can outrun it.

Fire and hot gases

Vegetation, buildings, fuel tanks and other combustible materials can ignite ahead of or beside a flow. Burning material may create smoke and reduce visibility, while hot gases can collect in low areas. A crust that appears dark can conceal liquid lava underneath, and cracks may release intense heat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Explosive interactions with water

USGS lists dangerous conditions when lava enters bodies of water. Lava entering the ocean can build an unstable delta. Collapse of that delta may trigger explosive activity and hurl hot rocks inland or seaward. Steam, acidic aerosols and rapidly changing shorelines add risk for anyone near the entry point. Similar hazards can occur where lava meets lakes, rivers, reservoirs or saturated ground, although the exact effects depend on the setting.

Terrain and exposure hazards after cooling

A flow does not become harmless as soon as its surface solidifies. A USGS notice describes hot, sharp surfaces that can cause burns, abrasions and cuts; uneven terrain that can cause falls; heat stress and dehydration; and steamy ground fog that may be acidic, reduce visibility or cause breathing difficulty. Lava tubes, skylights and overhangs can collapse, and warm ground may remain unstable long after visible movement stops.

What controls where a fountain’s material goes?

Fountain height and eruption rate

Higher jets can loft fragments farther from the vent, while stronger eruption rates can enlarge the area receiving spatter and ash. Pulsing fountains may alternate between coarse fallout and finer ash. A height measurement describes the jet at a particular time; it does not define a fixed exclusion radius.

Wind direction and speed

Wind is the main reason fine tephra and gases can affect places that are not close to the vent. Direction and speed can change during an episode, shifting the downwind corridor. Residents and visitors should rely on current aviation, air-quality and civil-defense information rather than a single wind observation.

What controls a lava flow’s route and reach?

Viscosity and temperature

Low-viscosity lava can spread readily and form long channels or tubes. More viscous lava tends to move less easily but can build thick, unstable lobes. As lava cools, viscosity rises and the flow may slow, stall or divert when a crust breaks.

Slope and topography

Gravity favors valleys, ravines and existing channels, but a flow can overtop a levee or cross a low divide when supply is high. Roads, walls and other barriers may redirect a flow temporarily; they do not guarantee containment. Mapping the terrain and current flow fronts is therefore more informative than measuring straight-line distance from the vent.

Supply rate and channel or tube formation

A high supply rate can keep a front moving and can send lava farther before it cools. Channels may crust over at the sides while remaining liquid inside. Tubes can transport lava efficiently and allow it to emerge well beyond the visible source, making the apparent end of a surface stream an unreliable boundary.

Historical examples that show the connection

Kīlauea Iki, 1959

In a 2025 account, HVO reported that episode 15 of the 1959 Kīlauea Iki eruption produced fountains reaching 580 meters (1,900 feet), the highest fountains then measured on Kīlauea. The figure demonstrates that Hawaiian fountaining can greatly exceed the USGS glossary’s typical 10-to-100-meter range.

Puʻu ʻŌʻō

HVO reports that fountains during the early Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption reached 460 meters (1,500 feet) and fed downslope flows. Some of those flows reached the Royal Gardens subdivision and destroyed houses. The example shows how an airborne display at a vent can translate into long-distance ground destruction.

Maunaulu, 1969–1974

HVO records fountains as high as 540 meters (1,770 feet) during the Maunaulu eruption. Lava traveled downslope, in one case more than 12 miles before reaching the ocean. Distance traveled depends on supply and terrain; it cannot be inferred from fountain height alone.

Long-term landscape coverage

HVO states that lava covered about 40% of Mauna Loa and more than 90% of Kīlauea’s surfaces during the previous 1,000 years. These historical percentages describe the landscapes’ eruptive history, not the probability or route of a future flow.

How to make a safe decision near an eruption

Use current official information

Conditions are location- and time-specific. Check the latest notices from the relevant volcano observatory, emergency-management agency and local civil-defense authority. An older photograph, a previous map or a report that a flow is slow cannot substitute for a current closure and hazard update.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Stay outside closures and restricted areas

Closures account for hazards that may not be visible, including gas, unstable ground, changing vents and escape routes that can be cut off. Do not cross a barricade, enter a closed trail or drive around a restriction to obtain a closer view.

Do not use apparent slowness as a safety test

A slow-looking front can accelerate on a slope, split around an obstacle or block the route behind an observer. Crusted lava can hide liquid interiors, and a retreat may be more difficult than the approach. There is no universal safe distance that applies to every fountain or flow.

Account for air and terrain

  • Remain upwind when official guidance identifies gas or ash concerns, and leave if authorities issue an evacuation or air-quality warning.
  • Protect eyes and breathing only with equipment and procedures recommended by local authorities; improvised protection does not make a closed area safe.
  • Avoid fresh crust, skylights, cliffs, ocean-entry deltas and steamy ground.
  • Carry water and plan for heat, but do not treat hydration or protective clothing as permission to enter an exclusion zone.

A current-condition example: Kīlauea notice of October 2, 2026

A USGS notice dated October 2, 2026, reported that flows from the Kīlauea eruption that began in December 2024 remained confined to Halemaʻumaʻu, an area closed to the public at the time. The notice also described tephra fallout and hazards around active or recently active flows. That statement is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of conditions after October 2. Anyone making a location-specific decision should consult the latest USGS and local civil-defense updates.

Where to verify hazards and terminology

Bottom line for readers

A lava fountain is an airborne, gas-driven jet; a lava flow is molten rock moving over the ground. Fountains can shower tephra and spread volcanic gases downwind, while the flows they feed can burn, bury and destroy along channels, tubes and slopes. Secondary dangers include fires, unstable ocean-entry deltas, hot and sharp crust, acidic steam and sudden loss of an escape route. Because behavior changes with gas release, wind, terrain and lava supply, follow current official instructions and closures instead of judging safety from appearance or speed.
