Neither password manager is the best fit for everyone. LastPass is the clearer choice if you need a free plan and can use it on just one device type. Dashlane is worth considering if you want paid access across devices, a 10-person family plan, phishing alerts, or a VPN bundled with Premium. The decision also involves LastPass’s 2022 security incident, your account-security habits, and each plan’s current renewal terms.
How the plans compare
The main practical differences are free access, device limits, family size, and the features included with paid subscriptions. The table reflects the providers’ plan pages as accessed October 7, 2026; prices and terms can change.
| Plan detail | LastPass | Dashlane |
|---|---|---|
| Current personal plans listed | Free, Premium, and Families, according to the LastPass pricing page. | Premium and Friends & Family. Dashlane says it no longer sells its Free plan or several older personal tiers, according to its plan comparison. |
| Free option | Free includes unlimited password storage but is limited to one device type. | No longer sold, according to Dashlane’s plan comparison. |
| Family plan size | Families provides six individual accounts. | Friends & Family covers 10 accounts. The plan manager gets VPN access; invited members do not. |
| Paid personal features highlighted by the provider | Feature details vary by plan; check the current pricing page and checkout terms. | Premium lists unlimited passwords and devices, secure sharing, dark-web monitoring, VPN protection, and real-time phishing alerts. |
| Monthly subscriptions | Check the current pricing page for available billing terms. | Dashlane says it no longer offers monthly subscriptions. |
| Current price and renewal amount | Check live checkout terms; the pricing page may display promotions. | Check live checkout terms; the official plan pages do not establish a lasting price in this comparison. |
Choose based on what you need
Choose LastPass if a free plan matters most
LastPass still lists a free tier with unlimited password storage, but its one-device-type restriction matters if you want to use the service across, for example, both a computer and a phone. Confirm the current free-plan terms on the LastPass pricing page before signing up.
Consider Dashlane for multiple users and paid cross-device use
Dashlane’s currently listed Premium plan supports unlimited devices, while Friends & Family covers 10 accounts. The plan manager receives VPN access, but invited family members do not. Premium also lists phishing alerts and dark-web monitoring. If you already pay for a VPN, treat the bundle as a feature rather than automatic savings; compare the total cost and renewal terms with your own subscriptions.

Compare what you will pay, not just the advertised offer
LastPass’s pricing page has displayed promotional language with an expiration date, and promotional prices are not necessarily renewal prices. Dashlane’s official support page says monthly subscriptions are no longer offered. Since prices and plan features can change, check the live checkout amount, billing period, and renewal charge for the plan and region you will actually use rather than relying on an older comparison.
What LastPass disclosed about its 2022 incident
In a notice dated December 22, 2022, LastPass CEO Karim Toubba said attackers used information obtained in an earlier development-environment incident to access a third-party cloud storage environment containing backups. LastPass said the attackers copied customer information and metadata—including names, billing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and IP addresses—and a backup of vault data. The company said that vault backup contained unencrypted information such as website URLs as well as encrypted sensitive fields such as usernames, passwords, secure notes, and form data. These are LastPass’s statements in its incident notice; attribute the details to the company rather than treating them as an independent audit.

The distinction between encrypted and unencrypted data matters. Encryption of sensitive vault fields does not make the incident irrelevant: exposed metadata and URLs can still be personal, and encrypted vault data makes the strength and uniqueness of a master password important. The incident is a significant factor for anyone deciding how much to trust the service, alongside the provider’s security controls and response.

Dashlane says its zero-knowledge design decrypts data on the user’s device and that it does not store or transmit the master password. Security.org’s May 13, 2026 comparison describes both services as using AES-256 encryption and zero-knowledge designs. These architecture descriptions are relevant, but they do not establish that one provider is categorically safer for every risk. They also do not erase LastPass’s incident history or guarantee that a user’s account cannot be compromised.

Questions to settle before you switch
- Do you need access from more than one device type? If so, LastPass Free’s stated limit may rule it out; compare current paid-plan terms with Dashlane Premium.
- How many people need separate accounts? LastPass Families lists six accounts; Dashlane Friends & Family lists 10.
- Would you use the included features? Dashlane Premium lists a VPN and phishing alerts. Family-plan invitees do not get the VPN, and an included VPN may add little value if you already have one.
- Are you comfortable with each provider’s security history and account controls? Consider the LastPass disclosure, both providers’ stated security designs, MFA, and recovery—not just an encryption label.
- What is the actual cost over time? Check the current billing period and renewal amount, not only a promotional first-term price.
Before moving password data, read the current export and import instructions for both services, verify your recovery options and MFA, and confirm the destination account is ready. Import reliability and current migration behavior are not established here, so do not assume a transfer will preserve every item or setting without checking the providers’ instructions.

For someone willing to pay for cross-device access and who values a 10-account family plan, phishing alerts, or a VPN included with Premium, Dashlane is the stronger candidate. The 2022 LastPass incident is a real trust consideration, not proof that every account is unsafe; weigh it against your own threat model and the account protections you will use.
