Ulfrid (Brian), Marlena, and Arthur are the practical S-tier core for October 2026. Arthur is the strongest tank in the latest Pocket Gamer ranking, Marlena is the high-damage Warrior carry, and Ulfrid (Brian) fills a Warlock-tank role. Use Bella or Grenwald when Arthur or Marlena is unavailable. The ranking is version-sensitive: Pocket Gamer’s tier list is dated September 16, 2026 and labeled version 1.0.63, while its team guide was updated October 5 for version 1.0.65.
That distinction matters because a hero’s rarity, purchase status, maximum Might, and usefulness inside a five-hero squad answer different questions. This guide separates those measures so you can spend upgrade materials deliberately instead of chasing a tier label.

The ranking is a snapshot, not a permanent power law. A patch can change damage, survivability, or utility, so check the version label before moving scarce materials out of an established team.
Why the S-tier core works
Arthur: first choice for the tank slot
Arthur is identified as the strongest tank in the Pocket Gamer list. Put him in the position that receives the most incoming pressure and build the rest of the squad around keeping your damage dealers active. If Arthur is missing, Bella or Grenwald is the practical replacement named by the guide.

Marlena: the damage carry
Marlena is the list’s high-damage Warrior carry. She is the clearest first damage investment when you need one hero to finish encounters faster. Her value rises when the other four slots protect her long enough to keep attacking, so do not treat her as a substitute for a frontline hero.

Ulfrid (Brian): a durable Warlock option
Ulfrid (Brian) is described as a Warlock tank. That gives the core a second durable role while preserving a source of pressure that is different from Marlena’s Warrior damage. The pairing is useful when a fight punishes teams that rely on only one frontline body.

Build the best five-hero team from your own roster
The “best team” is not always the five heroes with the highest individual Might. Use this order when choosing your lineup:
- Set the frontline first. Start with Arthur. If he is unavailable, test Bella or Grenwald before spending heavily on a lower-ranked SR tank.
- Add one primary carry. Make Marlena the first choice when available and adequately upgraded. Her job is to convert the time created by the frontline into damage.
- Fill the second durable role. Add Ulfrid (Brian) when his Warlock-tank profile fits the encounter; otherwise use the best-developed survivor who covers a missing role.
- Check utility rather than rarity. Compare shields, healing, debuffs, control, and other support effects alongside raw damage. A lower-rarity hero that keeps the carry alive can outperform a higher-rarity hero that duplicates a role.
- Match the mode. A lineup that survives a long campaign stage may not be the fastest option for a short damage check. Rebuild around the target mode instead of copying a universal list.
- Spend materials where they change the result. Prioritize heroes you can actually raise, obtain shards for, and keep in the squad. Upgrade cost and shard access are part of a hero’s practical value.
Rarity, paid heroes, and free-to-play access
Shadow and Cynthia are premium UR heroes and are excluded from Pocket Gamer’s standard ranking because obtaining them requires a purchase. That exclusion does not establish that they are weak; it means the list is designed around the ordinary recruitable pool rather than a paid-only acquisition path.

Paid status and combat ranking are separate questions. Pocket Gamer’s best-team guide, updated October 5, 2026 for version 1.0.65, says free-to-play players can obtain UR shards through the Alliance Shop, quests, and events. A free player should therefore evaluate whether the shard path is realistic for their account before judging a UR hero by its label alone. Do not abandon a well-developed S-tier core merely because a premium UR appears in a banner or shop.

There are 20 recruitable heroes according to Pocket Gamer’s 2026 guide. The Last Asylum Wiki uses a different lens for its standalone list: maximum Might. Its data, checked August 31, 2026 on version 1.0.87, puts Shadow at 1,075,906 maximum Might at the opening of Tier S.

The Wiki’s squad page models a 30-second reference fight using survivability and damage per second. That is a different question from “which hero has the highest Might?” A hero can lead an individual ranking while a balanced Arthur–Marlena–Ulfrid (Brian) lineup performs better for the account’s actual mode, levels, equipment, and shard availability.
How to decide whether to replace a hero
Keep the current hero when the replacement is underdeveloped
Compare equal investment before making a swap. A highly upgraded Bella or Grenwald can be more useful today than an unopened Arthur, and an established carry can be worth keeping while you collect Marlena shards.

If two heroes compete for the same damage slot, keep the one with better survivability, utility, and upgrade access for the mode you play. Use the freed slot to cover a missing tank, support, shield, heal, or debuff function.
Do not use maximum Might as the only filter
Maximum Might is a ceiling reached under the Wiki’s assumptions. Your decision should also include role fit, damage and survivability, team synergy, target-mode performance, rarity, shard access, and material requirements.
Patch context and freshness
Last Asylum: Plague launched in March 2026, with 37Games identified as the developer by GamsGo’s secondary-source coverage. The version labels above do not line up: the Pocket Gamer tier article is version 1.0.63, the Pocket Gamer team article is version 1.0.65, and the Wiki’s maximum-Might check is version 1.0.87. Treat the placements as an October 2026 snapshot and recheck them after balance patches, especially before investing rare materials or paying for a premium hero.
