Last Asylum: Plague has three explicit hero roles: tanks absorb pressure, damage dealers (DPS or carries) eliminate enemies, and supports keep allies alive or improve their performance. A reliable starting team is two tanks, two damage dealers, and one support, but later progression can favor three tanks when extra durability allows your damage dealers to attack for longer.
What each class does
The role icon on a hero card describes the job the hero is designed to perform. It is a useful starting point for team building, but it is not a complete ranking system. Faction bonuses, enemy composition, available upgrades, and the point at which you unlock a hero can change which lineup performs best.
| Role | Primary job | Typical strengths | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tank | Hold the frontline and absorb incoming pressure | High HP emphasis, shields, damage reduction, and disruption | Usually less direct killing power than a dedicated damage dealer |
| Damage dealer (DPS/carry) | Convert the time your team survives into enemy kills | High ATK emphasis, burst damage, or sustained damage | Needs frontline protection and enough time to attack |
| Support | Extend team survival and improve the squad’s output | Healing, buffs, shields, and damage reduction | Normally deals less direct damage than a dedicated DPS hero |
No tank or damage dealer replaces a support’s healing function. A tank can prevent or reduce damage, while a DPS can shorten a fight, but support heroes are the class that supplies ally healing and the broadest combination of sustain and utility.

Tanks: the durability anchor
Tanks are intended to occupy the dangerous side of the formation and receive attacks that would otherwise reach your damage dealers. Their value is measured by more than HP. A shield, damage-reduction effect, taunt-like control, or another defensive skill can buy the seconds a carry needs to finish a target.

When a tank is doing its job
- Your backline survives long enough to use its skills.
- Incoming damage is concentrated on heroes built to withstand it instead of fragile carries.
- The team does not collapse immediately when an enemy opens with burst damage.
- Adding defensive power produces more completed attacks from your DPS, not merely a longer defeat animation.
The researched role examples identify Arthur, Daskal, Billy, Brian, Louis, and Shadow as tanks. Treat this list as roster guidance rather than a permanent tier list: hero availability and balance can change as the game and individual servers progress.
Tank limitations
A team made entirely of durable heroes can survive for a while without actually removing threats. If your timer expires, an enemy healer outlasts you, or a damage check cannot be met, replacing one tank with a carry is often more useful than adding still more HP. Conversely, if your carry dies before acting, the problem is not insufficient damage; it is insufficient protection or an unfavorable position.
Damage dealers: the win condition
Damage dealers, also called DPS or carries, supply the ATK emphasis that ends fights. Some are designed to burst one target, while others produce sustained or area damage. Their practical output depends on uptime: a hero with impressive attack statistics contributes nothing after being eliminated or repeatedly controlled.
How to evaluate a carry
- Target access: Can the hero reach the enemy it needs to hit from your chosen slot?
- Damage timing: Does its burst arrive before the opposing team reaches a decisive skill cycle?
- Survival: Can it remain active without consuming every defensive resource from the rest of the squad?
- Coverage: Does it handle one priority target, several enemies, or a long fight better than your alternatives?
Examples identified in the role documentation include Marlena, Zoya, Annie, Jester, Red Lady, and Cynthia. Rarity alone should not decide between them. A less rare carry that is upgraded, protected, and compatible with your faction bonuses can outperform an inaccessible or underdeveloped option.
Why two carries are common
Two damage dealers give a new account enough killing pressure to finish ordinary encounters while leaving two frontline slots and one utility slot. They also provide insurance if one carry is countered, focused, or placed in a poor matchup. The downside is that two carries consume slots that could have supplied more durability or healing, so the arrangement must be tested against the content you are currently failing.

Supports: healing and utility
Supports sit between the other roles in their general profile but have a unique strategic job. They can heal allies, apply buffs, grant shields, reduce incoming damage, or otherwise improve the team’s ability to repeat its skill cycle. Their direct attack is usually lower than a specialist DPS hero’s, yet their contribution can be larger over a prolonged battle because they preserve several allies at once.
What support utility changes
- Healing: Replaces lost HP and can turn a near defeat into a clear.
- Buffs: Increase the team’s effective damage or defensive statistics.
- Shields: Absorb a burst that would otherwise interrupt a carry’s attack sequence.
- Damage reduction: Lowers the pressure on tanks and can make a three- or four-wave encounter sustainable.
Harper, Bell, Nicole, Stellar, and Celia are listed as support examples. A support is not automatically correct in every fight. If your team already survives comfortably and loses only because enemies remain alive too long, a second carry may produce a better result. If your carry dies before its second skill, the support’s defensive value can exceed the damage shown on a combat summary.
Comparing a lineup on the four useful axes
Use the following questions instead of judging heroes by role labels alone.
Survivability
Ask how long the formation withstands the enemy’s opening sequence and whether the frontline remains functional after the first major hit. Tanks and defensive supports score highest here. Survivability includes shields and mitigation, not only the HP number on a hero card.
Damage output
Measure whether the team defeats priority targets before they use their most dangerous abilities. Damage dealers are the main contributors, but a tank or support that keeps a carry active can increase total damage more than a weaker third attacker.

Utility and sustain
Healing, buffs, shields, and damage reduction matter most in repeated fights, long stages, and encounters where enemies cannot be burst down immediately. Utility is especially valuable when a small amount of extra survival allows another complete skill rotation.
Faction synergy
Last Asylum: Plague uses a counter relationship among Warrior, Warlock, and Ranger factions. The same-faction system also grants escalating HP, ATK, and DEF bonuses as more compatible heroes are placed together. A lineup with slightly lower individual rarity can therefore be stronger when its faction arrangement supplies a useful bonus and avoids an unfavorable counter.
The best five-hero starting formation
For a new account, the clearest template is two tanks, two damage dealers, and one support. A guide’s example uses Arthur, Daskal, Marlena, Zoya, and Harper. The exact names are less important than the jobs: two heroes protect the front, two heroes provide the majority of the killing pressure, and one hero sustains or enhances the group.
| Formation area | Recommended occupants | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Frontline slot 1 | Tank | Absorb pressure and use defensive control |
| Frontline slot 2 | Tank | Share incoming damage and protect the backline |
| Backline slot 1 | Damage dealer | Focus the highest-priority target |
| Backline slot 2 | Damage dealer | Add burst, sustained, or area damage |
| Backline utility slot | Support | Heal, shield, buff, or reduce damage |
Place the sturdier tank in the position receiving the heaviest attacks when the battlefield makes that distinction clear. Keep carries behind the frontline, and position the support where it can use its abilities without becoming the first target. If a support’s healing reaches only adjacent allies, adjust the arrangement so the intended recipients remain in range.
Should you use three tanks?
A separate squad-builder analysis evaluated 169,911 five-hero squads and found a broad optimum around three tanks. In the remaining two slots, the strongest patterns were either two damage dealers or one damage dealer and one support. This is a computed composition result, not a universal rule for every account, stage, or matchup.

Choose three tanks when
- Your carry survives only briefly under the two-tank setup.
- The enemy opens with burst damage that a support cannot fully offset.
- A third tank’s shield or mitigation lets both backline heroes complete additional attacks.
- You are losing by attrition rather than by failing a specific damage check.
Stay with two tanks when
- The team already survives until the end of the encounter.
- Enemies remain alive because your damage is too low.
- Removing the support causes deaths that the third tank cannot prevent.
- The extra tank has poor faction alignment or is substantially less developed than your available alternatives.
Compare the same stage with each formation and record the practical result: which enemy dies first, when your carry falls, whether the support completes its skill cycle, and whether the battle ends because the timer expires. The better composition is the one that changes the failure point, not automatically the one with the most defensive icons.
Faction counters and same-faction bonuses
Before replacing a hero, check the Warrior, Warlock, and Ranger relationship shown by the game. A counter advantage can outweigh a modest difference in individual statistics, particularly when the opponent relies on one faction. At the same time, stacking compatible heroes activates escalating HP, ATK, and DEF bonuses.
A practical faction check
- Identify the enemy faction or the matchup indicator for the stage.
- Check whether your proposed frontline and carries are disadvantaged by that relationship.
- Compare a counter-favored hero with the hero you would otherwise use, including current upgrade level.
- Count the same-faction members in each candidate lineup and note the resulting HP, ATK, and DEF bonus.
- Test the formation rather than assuming the highest bonus is always best; losing all of one faction’s heroes early can erase its theoretical advantage.
Progression, availability, and upgrade priorities
You cannot build a composition around a hero you cannot obtain or develop. Acquisition routes documented for the game include the Tavern, Top Up, Top Up Bonus Reward, and Daily Offer. Which heroes appear can also depend on server age and the route used, so check your own account’s current offers before treating a named example as immediately available.
Upgrade in a role-balanced order
- Keep both frontline heroes durable enough to survive the opening sequence.
- Invest heavily in one dependable carry so the team has a clear target-finishing tool.
- Develop the second carry or support according to the stage’s failure: damage if enemies live too long, utility if allies die first.
- Raise the second tank enough to prevent the backline from being exposed when the primary tank is focused.
- Recheck faction bonuses after every major replacement instead of upgrading heroes in isolation.
Concentrating every resource in a single carry can create a fragile account that fails when that hero is countered. Spreading upgrades evenly across five heroes is also inefficient if nobody can finish a priority target. A durable frontline, one well-developed carry, and a support that can complete its first useful skill cycle form a sensible early benchmark.

“My tanks live, but nothing dies.”
Replace a redundant defensive slot with a second or stronger damage dealer, check the enemy faction counter, and verify that your carries are attacking the intended target. A support that supplies only marginal healing is a possible swap when survival is already secure.

“My damage dealers die before using skills.”
Move them behind the sturdier tank, add a shield or damage-reduction support, or test a third tank. Confirm that the chosen frontline is not suffering a faction disadvantage and that its defensive upgrades are not far behind the rest of the team.
“The team wins one fight but fails later waves.”
This usually indicates insufficient sustain rather than a lack of opening burst. Test a support with healing or damage reduction, or use the three-tank pattern if the extra mitigation allows health to carry between waves. Compare the point at which the formation collapses, not just the first wave’s clear time.
“A high-rarity hero performs badly.”
Check role fit, level, equipment or skill progression available on your account, faction interaction, and positioning. Rarity does not remove the need for a frontline, a source of damage, or a support effect when the encounter demands one.
A repeatable method for choosing five heroes
- List the heroes you can actually obtain and upgrade through your current account’s routes.
- Mark each hero as tank, damage dealer, or support from its card.
- Build the two-tank, two-DPS, one-support baseline.
- Record the first failure: frontline collapse, carry death, missing damage, or unsustainable later waves.
- Change one slot at a time so you can identify which role solved the problem.
- Check Warrior, Warlock, and Ranger counters and same-faction HP, ATK, and DEF bonuses.
- Keep the formation that produces the best clear under the actual stage conditions, then revisit it when a new hero or upgrade changes the available options.
The result is a roster-specific answer rather than a permanent tier list. The 2-2-1 arrangement is an efficient starting point; the three-tank patterns identified in large squad calculations are valuable tests for difficult content; and faction effects can decide close comparisons.
