Laravel Cloud is managed hosting; Laravel Forge automates server provisioning and configuration while you retain access to the server; and a self-hosted VPS puts setup and ongoing operations in your hands. Choose according to how much server control your team needs, how much maintenance it can own, and the total cost for your workload—not simply the advertised plan price.

How the three options differ

Decision Laravel Cloud Laravel Forge Self-hosted VPS
What you pay for A managed hosting platform, with plan fees and resource charges. A server provisioning and management service, plus infrastructure from a provider. VPS infrastructure, plus your own deployment and maintenance work.
Server access and control Laravel describes Cloud as fully managed; you do not manage operating systems or server instances. You retain SSH/root access and can customize the server. You control server setup and configuration directly.
Scaling Laravel describes automatic scaling and scale-to-zero for supported Cloud resources. You manage scaling through instance resizing or provider tools. You design and operate the scaling approach.
Operational work Laravel handles more of the infrastructure work. Forge automates provisioning and server configuration; you remain responsible for the server lifecycle. You configure and maintain the application server and related services.
Best fit Teams prioritizing managed operations and an integrated platform. Teams that want provisioning automation but need server access and configuration control. Teams requiring direct control and able to own setup and ongoing operations.

This is Laravel’s published positioning, not a comparative test. It does not establish which option will deliver better uptime, performance, or total cost for a particular application. See Laravel’s Cloud-versus-Forge comparison and Cloud-versus-VPS comparison.

What Laravel Cloud includes—and what to verify

Cloud is the most managed of the three choices. Laravel presents it as an autoscaling deployment platform, with managed infrastructure and data resources; supported resources can scale to zero. That reduces the server administration the application team needs to do, but it also means less direct control over the underlying machines.

Cloud’s deployment documentation covers Laravel applications and provides runtime details. Check the current runtime versions and service compatibility against your app before choosing it: support details can change, and a platform’s general Laravel support does not guarantee compatibility with every dependency or configuration. Start with the Laravel Cloud overview and Laravel Cloud deployment guide.

What Forge does—and what remains yours

Forge is a control plane for provisioning and managing servers, rather than managed hosting in the same sense as Cloud. You choose infrastructure and retain access to the machine, while Forge automates server provisioning and common application-service setup. This can reduce repetitive setup work without removing your responsibility for the server’s lifecycle.

Laravel describes Forge as supporting Laravel and other PHP applications, and its comparison gives examples such as WordPress, Statamic, Node.js, Nuxt, and Next.js. Forge materials identify infrastructure choices including DigitalOcean, Vultr, Hetzner, AWS, and others. These provider names are options, not comparable price quotes; match region, instance size, storage, data transfer, support, and database arrangements when evaluating them. What self-hosting a VPS requires

With a self-hosted VPS, the infrastructure provider supplies the virtual machine; you own the work above it. Laravel’s deployment guidance is a useful starting point, but a production setup also requires decisions about the operating system, application services, deployment workflow, security updates, backups, monitoring, and scaling. The exact work depends on the application and infrastructure you choose.

This is the option with the most direct configuration control, and it is also the option where the operator takes the greatest share of operational responsibility. Laravel’s deployment documentation covers the application side; it does not make server maintenance the provider’s responsibility.

How the pricing models compare

The official pricing pages listed the following figures when checked on October 7, 2026. They are time-sensitive listings, not guaranteed current offers; confirm terms on the linked pages. Cloud prices include usage charges, and Forge’s subscription is separate from provider infrastructure costs.

Service Listed pricing on October 7, 2026 Important qualification
Laravel Cloud Starter: $5/month plus usage; Growth: $20/month plus usage. Starter included $5 in monthly usage credits, and the page described a free first month on Starter. Confirm current eligibility and terms on Laravel Cloud pricing.
Laravel Forge Hobby: $12/month; Growth: $19/month; Business: $39/month. The subscription is separate from cloud-provider charges. Confirm current plans and billing cadence on Laravel Forge pricing.
Self-hosted VPS Not stated as a single price; depends on provider, configuration, and usage. Budget for the chosen infrastructure and related operating costs.

These figures are not a like-for-like cost comparison. To compare your options, estimate the same application’s expected workload and include compute, database, cache, storage, bandwidth, backups, and monitoring. Add the team’s time for setup and maintenance: Forge and self-hosting require ongoing server responsibility, while Cloud’s bill depends on resource use and how scale-to-zero applies to the resources you use. The published sources do not establish a universally cheapest option.

A practical way to choose

  1. Choose Laravel Cloud if reducing infrastructure administration and using a managed, autoscaling platform matter more than direct server access. Verify that the application’s runtime and required services are supported.
  2. Choose Forge if you want automation for provisioning and common server setup but still need SSH/root access, provider choice, and room to customize. Account for both the Forge subscription and infrastructure charges.
  3. Choose a self-hosted VPS if direct control or a specialized configuration is important and your team can take responsibility for setup, deployment, updates, security, backups, and scaling.

Laravel’s deployment guide frames Cloud as fully managed and autoscaling, and Forge as server management for developers who prefer to manage their own servers while using Forge to configure application services. Use that distinction as the starting point; then weigh operational capacity and workload-specific costs.
