Under $250, the best laptop depends first on whether your school or home tasks work in a browser. A Chromebook can handle browsing, email, documents, video calls, and streaming for less, but it cannot run many Windows or macOS programs. If you need a specific desktop app, confirm compatibility before buying.
Current listings and prices change, and the available evidence does not establish five dependable, in-stock laptops with delivered prices below $250. Treat the models below as leads to verify—not five tested winners. Prices cited are retailer or comparison-page snapshots accessed October 7, 2026; check the exact configuration, shipping, tax, stock, and return terms before checkout.
What can you realistically expect from a laptop under $250?
This is a basic-use budget. It can cover web browsing, email, documents, video calls, and streaming, but it is not a sound target for demanding creative work or heavy multitasking. RTINGS describes those everyday activities as common use cases in its under-$300 category. Its findings are useful context, not a guarantee that every inexpensive laptop performs alike.

In RTINGS’ assessment of the ASUS Chromebook CX15, 4GB can work if you keep to a few tabs and apps; background tabs may be unloaded and need to reload. Do not assume that configuration will feel smooth with many open applications. Also check whether storage is eMMC, UFS, or another type and whether it can be upgraded; Best Buy notes that many budget computers offer limited upgradability.

Which under-$250 laptops are worth checking?
These are candidates supported by price or review snapshots, not a ranked list of five currently verified deals. Exact SKUs, sellers, stock, and final prices can change. A product appearing on a retailer category page does not mean it meets the budget.
Acer Chromebook 315 CB315-4H-C7A1: large-screen Chromebook lead
Smartprix listed this configuration at $219.98: Intel Celeron N4500, 4GB LPDDR4X memory, 64GB storage, ChromeOS, and a 15.6-inch 1920 × 1080 display. That snapshot makes it a possible option if you want a larger Full HD screen, but it does not establish current stock or a delivered price below $250. Check the exact model code and seller.

ASUS Chromebook CX15: consider it only if the price fits
RTINGS names the CX15 its best tested traditional clamshell under $300, not under $250. It has a 15.6-inch screen and a keyboard with a number pad. RTINGS says the 4GB configuration is workable for a few tabs and apps, while noting a washed-out display, touchpad misses, and battery life that may not last a full workday. An 8GB model may dip below $300 during sales, but the cited guide does not confirm a stable offer below $250. Treat it as a reference pick if the exact version falls within your total budget.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

In its own movie-playback test, TechRadar measured approximately seven hours of battery life. That is a reviewer test result, not a guarantee for other workloads or an estimate for every CX15 configuration.

Refurbished Acer Chromebook 315: a lower-priced listing to verify
Target showed a refurbished 15.6-inch Acer Chromebook 315 with an N4500 processor, 4GB LPDDR5 memory, and 64GB eMMC for $149.99. This is not necessarily the same configuration as the Smartprix listing above. Verify the exact model, seller, condition, included charger, battery status, warranty, and return policy.
Refurbished HP Stream 14: a Windows lead
Target showed a refurbished 14-inch HP Stream with Windows 11 Home, an Intel Celeron N150, 4GB memory, and 128GB storage for $209.99. This is a listing snapshot, not a verified recommendation. Confirm the precise Windows edition, seller and refurbisher, condition, and terms before purchase. Windows may suit you better than ChromeOS if your required software is Windows-only, but check that the specific program will run acceptably on this hardware.

New HP 14 Windows listings: do not confuse configurations
Best Buy’s “Computers Under $250” page displayed HP 14 Windows examples with 4GB memory and 64GB storage at $229.99 and $239.99. One was a 2021 Celeron N4500 configuration. The same page showed an HP 14 with a newer N150 processor, 4GB memory, and 128GB storage at $269—over the budget before any applicable shipping or tax. A category-page title is not proof that each listed item is under $250.
Refurbished business laptops: compare the whole offer
Refurbished business laptops can sometimes expose Windows models and stronger specifications at lower prices, but the listings reviewed do not establish a reliable specific model under $250. Target’s examples of the HP EliteBook 845 G7 and Dell Latitude 5420 were above that limit. Search by exact model only after checking the final price and refurbisher terms; the model name alone does not establish condition or value.

Chromebook or Windows: which is the better fit?
Choose based on the programs you must use, not just the price or processor name. ChromeOS is a practical fit when your work stays in the browser and compatible Android apps. It cannot install many Windows or macOS programs, so verify required school, workplace, printer, exam, or accessibility software with its provider before choosing a Chromebook.
Windows is the more relevant route when an essential application requires Windows. However, a low-cost Windows model with limited memory and storage may still struggle with demanding programs. Microsoft says its Windows 11 education devices can work online or offline and mentions built-in accessibility features; that general information does not confirm that every laptop listing here includes a particular feature. Ask the seller or manufacturer about the exact model.
Quick Recap
How to check whether a listing is actually a good buy
- Write down the required apps. Check the publisher’s system requirements and confirm that each essential program works on ChromeOS or the specific Windows version listed.
- Match the exact model and configuration. Compare the full model code, processor, installed memory, storage capacity, screen resolution, and operating system. Similar product names can refer to different hardware.
- Set a delivered-price ceiling. Add shipping and applicable taxes to the displayed price. If $250 is a hard cap, the total—not the product-page price—must stay below it.
- Assess screen and portability together. Listings span 14- and 15.6-inch screens, with both HD and Full HD examples. A larger display can make documents and video more comfortable to view, while adding bulk; check the resolution as well as the diagonal measurement.
- For refurbished devices, read the terms before paying. Confirm who refurbished and sells the laptop, what condition grade means, whether battery health was tested, whether a charger is included, and the warranty and return window. The cited listings do not independently establish all of these details.
- Recheck availability at checkout. Price-comparison pages and retailer listings are snapshots, not promises of current stock. Confirm that the selected seller, model, and final price remain the ones you intended to buy.
Sources and what their evidence establishes
- RTINGS’ 2026 under-$300 laptop guide provides independent testing context for the CX15 and its 4GB configuration. RTINGS says it tested more than 180 laptops in the guide’s context; that is the publication’s stated test corpus, not a market-wide statistic.
- TechRadar’s 2026 student Chromebook guide is the source for its CX15 portability assessment and approximately seven-hour movie-playback test.
- Smartprix’s US under-$250 laptop listings showed the Acer CB315-4H-C7A1 configuration and price described above. Listings can change.
- Target’s refurbished-laptop listings showed the Acer Chromebook 315 and HP Stream snapshots. Verify the current seller and terms on the item page.
- Best Buy’s computer listings are the source for the HP examples. The $269 N150 configuration is above the budget despite appearing on a page titled “Computers Under $250.”
- Microsoft’s education-device information describes Windows 11 education devices generally; it does not verify features for every low-cost model.
