You can find a laptop under $150, but the realistic choices are usually refurbished, used, or open-box—not a dependable lineup of five new machines. Retail listings change quickly, and some low-priced results are already sold out. Treat the models below as leads to verify, not tested recommendations or guaranteed deals.

These examples appeared in retailer search results; they are not a fixed, currently available top-five ranking. Check the exact listing for price, stock, seller, configuration, condition, and return terms before buying.

1. Remaining operating-system support
For a Chromebook, look up the exact device’s automatic update schedule and end-of-support date (often called its AUE date). Google says eligible Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates, but that schedule depends on the specific device; some devices require opting in to extended updates. For a Windows laptop, verify that the exact machine can run a currently supported Windows version and that the installed edition is covered. Microsoft lists October 14, 2025 as Windows 10’s end-of-support date; that date has passed, so ordinary Windows 10 should not be treated as currently supported. 2. Seller, condition, and recourse
“Refurbished” can describe different work and standards depending on who sells the item. On the product page, identify whether it is manufacturer refurbished or seller refurbished, and read the actual grading definition. Check the return window and warranty, whether a charger is included, and any stated battery-health information. Retail category results do not establish those details for an individual laptop.

3. Configuration and intended workload
Record the exact processor, RAM, storage type and capacity, screen size and resolution, ports, webcam, and keyboard layout. A low price alone does not show that a device will suit your apps. A modest Chromebook may be a fit for browser-based schoolwork, web apps, and documents if the required services work in ChromeOS. Choose Windows only when you need desktop software that requires it—and make sure the machine can run a supported Windows release.

4. Full cost and live availability
Recheck the current item price, shipping, applicable tax, stock, and seller immediately before checkout. A sold-out result or a price described as “as low as” is not a deal you can count on.

How to choose between a Chromebook and an older Windows laptop
- Choose a Chromebook candidate when your work is browser-first and the required apps or school services support ChromeOS. Check the exact model’s remaining update life before buying.
- Consider a Windows business laptop when a necessary desktop application will not run on ChromeOS. First confirm that the exact hardware supports a currently supported Windows version; an older model name or a Windows 10 installation is not enough.
- Walk away from either platform if the listing does not clearly identify the seller, configuration, condition, and a workable return policy—or if the price, stock, or support status cannot be verified.
Why this is a shortlist, not a tested ranking
The prices and models here come from retailer search snapshots, not hands-on testing, benchmark results, or a controlled comparison of the exact units.
