A black screen does not tell you by itself whether your laptop has no power or is running without displaying an image. Check for signs of power, disconnect accessories, and follow the troubleshooting branch for your operating system before attempting recovery. A cursor, blinking cursor, logo, or blank screen after an update can point to different problems, but none identifies a failed part on its own.
First determine whether the laptop has power
Look for power or charging lights, fan noise, keyboard backlighting, startup sounds, or a response when you press the power button. These clues help distinguish a laptop that may not be starting from one that appears to run while its display stays blank; they do not establish the cause.
- Check that the wall outlet works and that the charger is firmly connected at both ends. Look for visible damage to the charger or cable.
- If you can, try a known-working adapter and cable that are compatible with your exact laptop model. Connector shape alone does not establish compatibility; check the model’s power requirements.
- Disconnect USB devices, docks, storage devices, and external monitors, then try starting the laptop again. For a Mac that seems not to turn on, Apple recommends removing accessories and holding the power button for about 10 seconds before pressing it normally: Apple’s Mac power troubleshooting steps.
For a Surface, Microsoft gives family-specific instructions: disconnect accessories, confirm the device is charged, try the keyboard wake shortcut, and hold the power button for 20 seconds for a forced restart. Do not assume that timing applies to other laptops; check the manufacturer’s instructions for your model: Microsoft’s Surface startup guidance.

Note what appears, if anything, and when the screen went blank. The detail helps select a safer next step; it is not a definitive diagnosis.

- No image and no apparent signs of power: Continue checking the outlet and compatible power adapter. Use the laptop maker’s instructions for its specific model.
- A cursor on a blank Windows screen: Windows may have started while the desktop shell did not appear.
- A blinking cursor: Microsoft treats this as a different startup clue from a cursor-only blank screen.
- The screen went blank after an update: The timing can help identify a Windows recovery route, but it does not prove the update caused the issue.
- A logo appears, then the screen goes blank: The laptop is showing some startup activity. Use the recovery guidance for its operating system rather than assuming the display or another part has failed.
If Windows seems to be running behind the blank screen
Microsoft’s blank-screen steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11 include these keyboard shortcuts. They may help when Windows is active but the display or desktop is not responding as expected: Microsoft’s Windows blank-screen troubleshooting guide.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or screen flicker can indicate that Windows responded.
- Press Windows + P to cycle through display modes, in case Windows is sending the image to another display.
- If Ctrl + Alt + Delete opens the security screen and a cursor is visible, open Task Manager. Microsoft’s guide describes restarting Windows Explorer as a step for a cursor-only blank screen.
If Windows repeatedly fails to start, use Windows Recovery Environment and choose an option that fits when the problem began. Microsoft lists options including uninstalling updates and restore choices; which options are available depends on the Windows version. Recovery actions can affect data, so back up important files first if you can: Microsoft’s Windows recovery options and Windows Recovery Environment information.

If a Mac powers on but stays blank
Apple distinguishes a Mac that does not turn on from one that seems to be on while its screen remains blank. For the latter, Apple recommends a forced shutdown and restart, then trying macOS Recovery. If Recovery opens, use Disk Utility to repair the startup disk. If the blank startup continues, Apple’s instructions say to return to Recovery and reinstall macOS: Apple’s Mac blank-screen startup guide.

If the Mac does not appear to turn on, check its power cable and outlet, try another compatible cable or adapter if available, hold the power button for about 10 seconds, and remove accessories as described in Apple’s power troubleshooting instructions. The steps for Macs do not necessarily apply to other laptop brands.

When to stop troubleshooting
If checking power, removing accessories, and following the appropriate manufacturer’s recovery steps do not help, contact the laptop maker or a qualified repair service. A single restart, charger substitution, or recovery option cannot be expected to resolve every cause of a black screen. Before any recovery action that may change or erase data, protect important files if access becomes possible.
