If your laptop camera stopped working after you changed privacy settings, start by restoring Windows camera access rather than reinstalling drivers. In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. In Windows 10, open Settings > Privacy > Camera. Turn on device-level camera access, permit the relevant app category, and enable desktop-app access when the program is a browser or desktop meeting application. Then check any physical shutter or camera key and test with the built-in Camera app.
The path differs slightly between Windows 10 and 11, and the right next step depends on whether every app fails or only one. The sequence below keeps changes reversible and uses the error message, app behavior, and camera type to narrow the cause.
First, identify the failure pattern
Before changing drivers or firmware, note three things: which Windows version you use, whether the camera fails in every app or just one, and whether the camera is built in or connected by USB. These distinctions separate a permission problem from an app-selection issue, a physical privacy control, a policy restriction, or a device-detection failure.

- Only one app fails: Windows may be working, while that app has selected the wrong camera, lacks site-level permission, or is competing with another process.
- Every app fails: check Windows permissions, the physical camera control, restart state, security software, Device Manager, and policy restrictions.
- The camera is built in: use the laptop maker’s model-specific support instructions for drivers and BIOS settings.
- The camera is USB: verify the cable and port first; most currently available USB webcams use the standard UVC interface, although a generic driver can remove manufacturer-specific features.
If you use macOS, ChromeOS, or Linux, these Windows paths do not apply. Use that operating system’s camera privacy controls and the computer or camera maker’s support documentation instead.

Restore Windows camera permissions
Windows has a device-level permission and additional permissions for app categories. A change to the top-level switch can make the camera appear broken even though the hardware is fine.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security, then Camera.
- Turn on Camera access. This is the device-level control.
- Turn on the option that allows apps to access the camera, and enable the affected Microsoft Store app if it is listed.
- For a browser or other desktop program, turn on Let desktop apps access your camera.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy, then Camera.
- Turn on the device camera access switch.
- Allow camera access for the relevant app category and app.
- Enable Allow desktop apps to access your camera when the affected program is a browser or desktop application.
Microsoft documents these controls in Manage app permissions for a camera in Windows. A device-level switch that is greyed out or cannot be changed may be controlled by an administrator. On a work or school laptop, contact the organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.
What each switch actually controls
The top-level Camera access switch can block the device for the whole Windows installation. The app-category switch then controls access for Microsoft Store applications, and an individual app switch may appear beneath it. Desktop programs are handled differently: browsers, Teams, Zoom, recording tools, and similar programs generally use the single Let desktop apps access your camera setting. Windows does not provide a separate desktop-app toggle for every program on that page.
After changing a permission, close the affected program completely and reopen it. A program that was already running may retain its earlier denied permission or may not enumerate the camera again until it starts fresh.
Understand desktop-app and browser permissions
Browsers and many video-conferencing programs are desktop apps. They may not appear in the Microsoft Store app list, so their absence there does not mean they have no camera permission. Enable Let desktop apps access your camera first.
Then check the program’s own settings. In a browser, open the camera permission for the affected website and choose the intended camera. A previously denied site permission can continue blocking video even after Windows access is restored; remove the site’s block, allow camera use, and reload the page. In a meeting or recording app, open its audio/video settings and select the integrated or USB camera explicitly.
If the browser works on one site but not another, the problem is almost certainly site-level permission or the site’s chosen device rather than the Windows hardware. If no browser site works but the Camera app does, check the browser’s privacy settings, extensions that block media devices, and whether the browser is the desktop version you intended to use.

Check the laptop’s separate privacy controls
Windows permissions are not the only camera switch. Many laptops have a sliding shutter over the lens, a side switch, or a keyboard camera key. A shutter can block the image, while an electronic key or switch can make Windows behave as if no camera is present.

- Inspect the bezel for a physical shutter and slide it fully open.
- Look along the laptop’s sides for a camera switch and set it to the enabled position.
- Look for a keyboard key with a camera icon. Press it once, or use the model’s documented function-key combination if the icon is shared with another function.
- Test again in the Windows Camera app.
Do not assume a black preview is a permission error: a closed shutter can leave the software apparently configured while admitting no light. Some electronic keys also disable the sensor at firmware level, so Windows may report that no camera is attached.
Use the Camera app to separate Windows from app problems
Restart Windows before testing. A restart releases camera handles left by a crashed browser, recorder, or meeting process and reloads the capture service.
- Restart the computer.
- Open the built-in Camera app from the Start menu.
- Accept the permission prompt if Windows displays one.
- Check whether a live image appears.
If the Camera app shows an image, the camera hardware and Windows capture path are functioning. Concentrate on the original app’s selected camera, site permission, or another program holding the device. If the Camera app also fails, continue with the system checks below.
Test with only the Camera app open. Close Teams, Zoom, browser tabs, streaming software, recording utilities, and any virtual-camera tool before opening it. This gives you a clean baseline and avoids mistaking a busy-device error for a permissions failure.
Match the symptom or error code to the next action
| What you see | Likely meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0x80070005 or “access denied” | Windows is refusing camera access. | Return to the Camera privacy page, enable device and app or desktop access, and check whether an administrator controls the switch. |
| 0xA00F4292 or a message that access is restricted by policy | An organization policy may block the camera. | Ask your work or school IT administrator to review the applicable camera policy. Do not attempt to override a managed setting. |
| 0xA00F4243 or an indication that another app is using the camera | Another process has an active camera handle. | Close browsers, meeting, recording, streaming, and camera applications. Reopen only the app you want to test, then restart Windows if the handle remains. |
| 0xA00F4244 or “we can’t find your camera” | Windows is not detecting the device. | Check the shutter or camera key, reconnect a USB camera, inspect Device Manager, and follow the laptop or camera maker’s driver guidance. |
| 0xA00F4246 or a security-software lock | Antivirus or endpoint security may be blocking camera access. | Review the security product’s camera-protection setting or ask IT for an approved change. Keep protection enabled unless the administrator directs otherwise. |
Microsoft lists these code meanings and corresponding checks in Camera doesn’t work in Windows. The codes identify likely causes, not success rates or proof that a particular component is defective.
When only one app cannot use the webcam
Choose the correct camera in the app
A laptop can expose an integrated camera and one or more USB cameras. Open the affected app’s video settings and select the camera that produced an image in the Windows Camera app. If the app was open while you changed permissions, close it completely and launch it again.
Check browser site permission
Browsers add a site-level permission on top of Windows access. Open the browser’s permission controls for the meeting or recording site, allow camera use, and choose the intended device. If the site remembers a denied choice, remove that site-specific block and reload the page.
Release the camera from other processes
Close other browser windows using video, background recording utilities, and communication apps. Some programs keep the camera open after their window is minimized. If you cannot identify the process, restart Windows and test the failing app before opening anything else.

Distinguish a camera problem from a meeting problem
If the Camera app shows video but a meeting preview is blank, verify that the meeting has not muted or disabled video, that the browser tab has permission, and that the app is using the same device shown in Camera. Try a second browser or the service’s desktop client only as a comparison; a successful second client points back to the first app’s configuration.
When every app fails
Inspect Device Manager
Open Device Manager and look under categories such as Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers, depending on the hardware and driver. A missing device, warning icon, or disabled entry points to detection or driver work rather than an app permission.
- If the camera entry is disabled, use the documented Enable device action.
- If it has a warning icon, record the device name and current driver details before making changes.
- If it is absent, recheck the physical switch and, for USB models, the cable and another known-good port.
- Use View > Show hidden devices only as an observation; do not remove an entry unless the maker’s instructions tell you to.
For a built-in camera, prefer the laptop maker’s support page for the exact model and Windows edition. Generic driver changes can remove model-specific functions, so keep a rollback path and record the original driver before replacing it. Avoid driver-updater utilities that select software without identifying the precise camera hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConsider security software
Endpoint protection and antivirus products can enforce their own camera blocks. Check whether a privacy or webcam-shield feature is enabled. On a managed computer, policy may prevent you from changing it; ask IT to verify the setting instead of uninstalling security software. A security lock can produce a different code from a simple Windows permission denial, so note the exact message for support.
Check for policy restrictions
Policy restrictions are especially likely on work and school devices. The 0xA00F4292 condition documented by Microsoft indicates that an administrator or group policy may be limiting access. If the Camera access switch is locked, provide the exact error, your Windows version, and whether the device is company-managed to the administrator.
Driver and UVC checks for USB webcams
Most currently available USB webcams are compatible with the USB Video Class (UVC) standard. Windows can therefore use its in-box USB Video Device driver when the camera maker’s driver is unavailable. Microsoft’s procedure is described in its camera troubleshooting guidance.
- Connect the webcam directly to the computer, avoiding a hub while diagnosing.
- Try a second known-good USB port and check whether Windows makes a connection sound or lists a new device.
- In Device Manager, locate the camera entry and choose the option to update its driver.
- Choose to browse for drivers on the computer, then select the option to pick from available drivers.
- Choose USB Video Device when it is offered and complete the installation.
- Test in the Camera app and then in the original application.
The generic UVC driver may not support manufacturer-specific features, including some Windows Hello functions or special controls. If the camera maker supplies a current driver for your exact model, follow that guidance instead. Do not use a driver updater utility as a substitute for identifying the correct hardware. Disconnect other USB video devices while testing so the app cannot silently select the wrong one.

BIOS menus and labels vary by model. Before changing firmware settings, read the laptop maker’s instructions for your exact model, note the original value, and avoid firmware updates unless the maker specifically recommends one for the camera problem. If the camera remains absent from Device Manager after the documented checks, manufacturer support or hardware repair is more appropriate than repeatedly changing Windows permissions.
Camera app data can also become corrupted. Use the laptop maker’s or Microsoft instructions for repairing or resetting the Camera app if that option is available on your Windows edition, and test again before changing firmware. App reset can remove the app’s local settings, so record any custom configuration first.
When an external webcam is a sensible fallback
A UVC-compatible USB webcam is a conditional workaround when the integrated camera remains unavailable and you need video immediately. It is not the first fix for a privacy toggle that can be restored in Windows. Connect it directly, confirm that Windows detects it, select it in the Camera app and the affected program, and keep the integrated camera disabled or shuttered if you do not want it used.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Windows 10 support context
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025 on its camera-permissions guidance: Manage app permissions for a camera in Windows. The permission steps remain useful on an existing Windows 10 installation, but security and driver availability may differ from a supported Windows release. Confirm your edition and support status before planning a longer-term fix.
What to record before contacting support
Support can diagnose a camera failure faster when you provide the exact Windows version, laptop or webcam model, whether the Camera app displays video, the complete error code, and whether Device Manager lists the device. Also mention whether the problem affects every app, whether the laptop is managed by work or school, and whether opening the physical shutter or camera key changed anything. These details identify whether the next owner of the problem is the app developer, your administrator, the camera maker, or the laptop repair team.
A short decision path
- Restore permissions: enable Camera access and the appropriate Store-app or desktop-app permission for your Windows version.
- Open the shutter or enable the camera key: these controls are independent of Windows settings.
- Restart and test in Camera: an image there means the original app needs attention.
- If one app fails: choose the correct camera, allow the browser site, and close competing apps.
- If all apps fail: use the error-code table, inspect Device Manager, review security software and policy, and follow model-specific driver guidance.
- If the integrated device is still undetected: consult the manufacturer, and use a directly connected UVC webcam only as a practical fallback.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my webcam stop working immediately after I changed privacy settings?
The top-level Windows Camera access switch may have been turned off, or desktop-app access may have been disabled. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera; in Windows 10, go to Settings > Privacy > Camera. Enable device access and the appropriate app or desktop-app permission, then reopen the program.
Why is my browser missing from the Windows camera app list?
Browsers are desktop apps and usually are not listed with Microsoft Store apps. Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera, then allow the camera for the specific website in the browser and choose the correct camera.

My camera works in Windows Camera but not in Zoom or Teams. What should I do?
Windows is reaching the hardware, so check the meeting app’s selected camera, its own video permission, and any browser site permission. Close other apps that may be using the camera, then restart the meeting app.
What does Windows error 0xA00F4244 mean?
It means Windows cannot detect the camera. Check the physical shutter or camera key, reconnect a USB webcam, inspect Device Manager, and follow the laptop or camera maker’s model-specific driver instructions.
What does 0xA00F4292 mean on a work laptop?
Microsoft associates it with camera access restricted by policy. A group policy or administrator may be blocking the device. Contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the setting.

Yes. Some security products include webcam-protection controls and can produce a security lock such as 0xA00F4246. Review the product’s approved camera setting or ask IT; do not uninstall protection just to test the camera.
Should I install a generic USB Video Device driver?
Most USB webcams support UVC, so Microsoft’s in-box USB Video Device driver can help when the camera maker’s driver is unavailable. It may remove manufacturer-specific features, including some Windows Hello functions, so prefer the maker’s driver and keep a rollback path.
When should I buy an external webcam?
Use a UVC-compatible USB webcam as a fallback when the integrated camera remains unavailable and you need video. First restore permissions and check detection, policy, physical controls, and drivers; buying hardware will not fix a disabled Windows privacy switch.
Does the Windows 10 camera fix still apply after support ended?
The permission steps can still work on an existing Windows 10 installation, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Driver and security availability may differ, so check your support status when planning a longer-term solution.
