Short answer: buy a desktop PC if the computer will stay in one place and you prioritize comfort, performance per dollar, a large or multi-monitor workspace, and future upgrades. Buy a laptop if you regularly move between home, work, school, or travel and want the screen, keyboard, trackpad, camera, and battery included. Rising laptop prices make the comparison more important, but they do not make a desktop automatically cheaper: compare the complete usable setup at your local prices.
What the 2026 price evidence actually says
Memory and processor costs are putting upward pressure on PC prices, but the available figures describe different markets and should not be treated as a single universal laptop-price forecast.
TrendForce’s conditional notebook scenario
In an analysis published March 10, 2026, TrendForce modeled a mainstream notebook with a US$900 manufacturer suggested retail price in the first quarter of 2025. Under normal conditions, DRAM and SSDs represented about 15% of the notebook’s bill of materials. The analysis projected their share could exceed 30% in the first quarter of 2026.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If manufacturers maintain existing supply-chain margins, TrendForce said memory costs alone could require a retail increase of more than 30% in that modeled machine. Adding processor increases could push the scenario close to 40%. This is a conditional industry model, not a claim that every laptop on a store shelf will rise by those percentages.
#1 Best Overall
- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
The same analysis cited Intel price increases of more than 15% for certain entry-level and older-generation notebook processors, with additional increases planned for other platforms in the second quarter of 2026. Actual prices still depend on your country, configuration, inventory age, exchange rates, retailer promotions, and the manufacturer’s pricing decisions.
Omdia’s broader US PC measure
Omdia reported that the average US PC sell-in price exceeded $1,000 in the second quarter of 2026, up 12.0% year over year. It attributed the pressure mainly to DRAM and NAND constraints. Omdia also reported a 9.7% increase in consumer PC average selling prices for the quarter.
Those are aggregate US sell-in and consumer-market statistics, not retail quotes and not a laptop-versus-desktop comparison. They support the conclusion that component inflation is real while leaving the price of any particular model uncertain. Check current local listings rather than delaying a purchase solely because of one forecast.
Start with where the computer will live
Location and frequency of movement usually settle the form-factor decision before price enters the discussion.
Choose a desktop when the machine has a home
- Your work, study, gaming, or creative tasks happen at one desk or in one shared room.
- You want a full-size keyboard, a comfortable mouse, an ergonomic seating position, or a large display.
- You expect to use two or more monitors, add a graphics card, or replace storage and memory over time.
- You want the most processing capability possible for a given computer budget and can supply the desk space.
Microsoft’s US comparison guide recommends a Windows 11 desktop for people who mostly work in one place and want the most comfort and performance for the price. That is vendor editorial guidance, not an independent benchmark, but it matches the practical trade-off: a desktop allocates more of its cost to components rather than to a battery, compact chassis, hinge, and integrated input devices.

Choose a laptop when movement is a requirement
- You carry the computer between home and an office, classroom, client site, or travel destination at least weekly.
- You need one self-contained device with a display, keyboard, trackpad, webcam, speakers, wireless networking, and battery.
- Your living space is small, your desk is shared, or you need to put the computer away after use.
- You can accept some premium for portability and may add a monitor or dock when working at a desk.
Microsoft summarizes the trade-off directly: “Portability of a laptop can add cost.” Its guide also notes that a laptop can become a workstation with an external monitor and accessories, but those additions increase the total setup cost.
Compare the complete usable setup, not an empty box
A laptop includes its primary display and input devices. A desktop normally does not. Comparing a $900 laptop with a $900 desktop without accounting for the desktop’s missing equipment gives a misleading answer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Cost element | Desktop setup | Laptop setup |
|---|---|---|
| Computer | Desktop tower or small-form-factor PC | Laptop |
| Primary display | Usually a separate monitor | Built-in screen |
| Keyboard and pointing device | Usually separate keyboard and mouse | Built-in keyboard and trackpad |
| Camera, microphone, speakers | May require separate or add-on devices | Normally integrated, though quality varies |
| Battery and power protection | No internal battery; optional uninterruptible power supply | Battery included; charger included |
| Desk accessories | Monitor stand, cables, hub, and other peripherals as needed | Dock, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and cables only if you want a desk workstation |
Make two lists before shopping: the items you already own and the items you must buy. A desktop may be the better value when you already have a suitable monitor and peripherals. A laptop may be the better value when buying those items separately would erase the tower’s apparent price advantage.
Performance per dollar and everyday comfort
Why desktops usually deliver more capability for the money
Desktop components can use larger cooling systems and a steady wall-power supply. That generally allows higher sustained processor and graphics performance than a similarly named mobile chip in a thin laptop. HP’s US category guide describes desktop upgrade options as including the processor and motherboard, graphics card, memory, and storage, and says affordable desktops can offer more processing power and functionality than affordable laptops of a similar grade. Treat that as a general category comparison, not a guarantee for every pair of machines.
For a fixed desk, the desktop’s larger display options and full-size peripherals can also improve comfort during long sessions. A monitor at the correct height, an external keyboard, and a mouse can reduce the compromises imposed by a small built-in screen and shallow laptop keyboard.

What the laptop premium buys
A laptop’s price covers engineering that a desktop buyer purchases separately: a compact enclosure, battery, display, hinge, keyboard, trackpad, webcam, wireless radios, and power-management hardware. You are paying for a device that can be closed, carried, and used away from an outlet, not merely for processor and memory specifications.
For writing, office applications, web work, coding, and moderate photo editing, that convenience can be worth more than a desktop’s extra performance. For demanding rendering, large software projects, high-refresh gaming, or workloads that run for hours, compare sustained performance and cooling—not just the processor family name.
Upgradeability and useful lifespan
Desktop upgrade paths
Many desktop cases provide accessible slots or bays for additional memory, storage, and expansion cards. Depending on the platform, you may later replace the graphics card, processor, motherboard, power supply, or cooling system. These possibilities can extend the useful life of the original case and peripherals.
Upgrade flexibility has value only if you are comfortable opening the system, checking compatibility, and paying for parts later. A future upgrade is not free, and standards, firmware support, power requirements, and physical clearance can limit what fits.
Laptop limits and exceptions
Some laptops allow memory or storage replacement, while others solder one or both components to the motherboard. The battery is a consumable part and may be difficult or expensive to replace after several years. Check the service manual or manufacturer specifications for the exact model before assuming an upgrade is possible.

A laptop’s external monitor, keyboard, mouse, and dock can outlive the computer and transfer to a replacement. That protects part of your investment, but it does not turn the laptop’s internal processor or graphics into upgradeable desktop components.
A practical decision process
- Record your movement pattern. Write down every location where you will use the computer in a typical month. If carrying it between locations is a requirement rather than a preference, begin with laptop options.
- Define the workload. List the applications and tasks that must run well, then note whether they are light office work, sustained compilation, video editing, 3D work, gaming, data analysis, or something else. Match the complete machine—not just the CPU name—to that workload.
- Set the workspace requirement. Decide whether you need one large display, multiple monitors, a full-size keyboard, a quiet room, or a setup that can be packed away. Include a monitor and peripherals in a desktop budget; include a dock and external display in a laptop budget if you want desktop ergonomics.
- Price matched configurations locally. Compare machines with similar memory, storage, display quality, graphics capability, warranty terms, and operating-system edition. Use current retailer and manufacturer prices in your currency. The available evidence does not establish a universal savings amount or a matched set of current models.
- Value portability explicitly. Estimate how often you will carry the computer and what that convenience saves in duplicated equipment or lost time. If the answer is “almost never,” do not pay a portability premium by default.
- Check service and upgrade details. For a desktop, verify case dimensions, power-supply capacity, expansion slots, and memory and storage slots. For a laptop, verify battery-replacement policy, memory configuration, storage access, port selection, and dock compatibility.
- Choose based on the total five-year experience. Consider accessories, repairs, battery replacement, upgrades, electricity, and the possibility that you will replace the entire laptop rather than one desktop component. Do not assume upgradeability automatically produces a lower lifetime cost.
When a laptop becomes a workstation
A laptop can cover both mobile and desk use. At home or in an office, connect it to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, power delivery, network, and other peripherals through a dock or individual cables. Microsoft notes that these accessories can make a laptop function as a workstation.
This hybrid arrangement is attractive when you need one set of files and applications everywhere. It is less attractive when the laptop must drive several high-resolution displays, run a hot workload continuously, or remain portable while connected to bulky accessories. Price the dock, monitor, and peripherals before deciding that one laptop is cheaper than a desktop plus a simpler mobile device.

Assuming every laptop will rise by 30–40%
The TrendForce figures are a modeled scenario for a particular US$900 mainstream notebook and specified margin assumptions. They are not a guarantee for every region, brand, generation, or retailer. Promotions, excess inventory, exchange rates, and product refreshes can offset or amplify component-cost pressure.

Comparing specifications without power limits
Two processors with the same family name can perform differently when one is configured for a thin chassis and the other has a larger thermal and power budget. Look for sustained-performance tests from trustworthy sources or manufacturer power specifications when the workload is demanding. Do not infer real performance from a model number alone.
Ignoring the screen and input-device trade-off
A low-cost desktop may look attractive until you add a monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, speakers, and cables. A low-cost laptop may look expensive until you account for the equivalent equipment it already includes. Put every required item in the same comparison.
Buying upgrade potential you will never use
An open desktop case and spare slots matter only if you intend to replace parts. If you prefer a sealed, supported appliance and expect to replace the whole computer after several years, prioritize warranty, reliability, battery life, and ergonomics instead.
Decision guide by situation
| Your situation | More sensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One permanent home office, long sessions, two monitors | Desktop | Better ergonomic flexibility, screen choices, and typical performance per dollar |
| Weekly commute between home and office | Laptop | One portable computer avoids maintaining two systems |
| Small or shared living space | Laptop | It can be stored away and used in multiple locations |
| High-end graphics or sustained compute at one desk | Desktop | Cooling, power delivery, expansion, and component replacement are usually stronger |
| Student moving between classes and residence | Laptop | Built-in display, keyboard, battery, and wireless connectivity travel together |
| Existing monitor, keyboard, and mouse already owned | Desktop may have an advantage | Fewer additional purchases are needed; verify the monitor and peripherals meet your needs |
| Need one device for travel and an ergonomic desk | Laptop plus external monitor or dock | Combines mobility with a larger workstation, at the cost of accessories |
How to respond to current market uncertainty
Do not buy a desktop solely to avoid a forecasted laptop increase, and do not rush into a laptop solely because memory prices may rise. First decide which form factor fits your routine, then compare currently available, like-for-like systems. A modest discount on a machine that does not meet your mobility or workload needs is not a saving.
If you need a laptop soon, compare several configurations with the memory and storage you will actually use; replacing soldered components later may be impossible. If you need a desktop, reserve enough of the budget for a monitor and peripherals that match your work. In either case, check return windows, warranty coverage, repair options, and the cost of adding storage or memory.
Bottom line for 2026 buyers
A desktop PC makes more sense when your computer stays put and you value comfort, display space, sustained performance, and component upgrades. A laptop makes more sense when moving the computer is central to your life and the included screen, keyboard, camera, and battery replace a collection of separate purchases.
The 2026 evidence points to genuine cost pressure: TrendForce’s conditional model allows for a more-than-30% memory-driven retail increase and nearly 40% when processor costs are added, while Omdia measured a US PC average sell-in price above $1,000 and up 12.0% year over year in the second quarter. Those figures do not identify a universal winner. Your country, workload, accessories, and current offers determine the value of a particular machine.
