To project a laptop onto an interactive whiteboard, connect its video output to the projector or display, choose the matching input, and set the laptop to duplicate or extend its screen. To use the board’s touch or pen controls, you may also need a separate USB or supported network connection and the manufacturer’s interactive software. The exact ports and steps depend on the laptop, board, and projector models.
What you need to connect
Identify the laptop’s operating system and available video ports, plus the model of the interactive board and its projector or display. Check the manufacturers’ current manuals for port assignments, supported operating systems, drivers, and any required interactive hardware. A visible projected image and working touch are separate outcomes: video may travel over HDMI while touch data travels over USB.
- Video connection: HDMI, VGA, a model-specific USB display connection, or a supported wireless display method.
- Interactive connection: often USB or a supported network connection, depending on the system.
- Software and setup: a driver, interactive mode, calibration, or optional touch hardware may be required.
For example, Epson documents HDMI, VGA, USB, and network computer-image connections for the BrightLink EB-725Wi and EB-735Fi; its guide calls for a separate USB connection for interactivity when video uses HDMI or a Computer input. Those details apply to those models, not to every interactive projector. See Epson’s PC Interactive Mode instructions.

Choose a connection method
| Method | What it carries | Check before setup |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI or VGA plus USB | Video to the projector or display, with a separate USB link for touch or pen control on supported systems. | Confirm the laptop and projector ports, the selected projector input, the correct USB port mapping, and required driver or interactive mode. |
| USB display or USB video | Video through USB on certain product models; some systems may also use USB for interactivity. | Verify that the exact model supports this method and whether a menu setting or specific USB port is required. Epson notes that USB Display response may be slower on the models covered by its guide. |
| Wireless screen mirroring | The laptop image, without a direct video cable, when the laptop and receiver support a compatible method. | Confirm that both ends support the same method, such as Miracast. Wireless projection alone does not ensure that board touch works. |
| Dock or adapter | An adapted video connection between the laptop and the projector or display. | Check connector compatibility, power requirements, supported resolution, and whether touch needs a separate cable or connection. |
Choose based on compatibility with the exact equipment, whether you need touch, cable reach, and the reliability or convenience required for the room. HDMI, USB, and wireless projection are not interchangeable across all systems.

Connect the laptop and enable interaction
- Find the model-specific instructions. Note the laptop operating system, interactive board model, and projector or display model. Look up their current manufacturer guidance before buying a cable or installing a driver.
- Connect the video path. Run a supported output from the laptop to the projector or display, using a compatible adapter if necessary. Select the input that matches the connected port on the projector.
- Connect the interactive path. If the system uses a separate USB or network connection for touch and pen input, connect it to the specified ports. On an older SMART Board and projector combination, the board’s USB connection does not replace the laptop’s video connection to the projector. SMART’s setup guides cover USB and driver requirements for the SMART Board 600 | D600 and SMART Board 800.
- Choose a display mode. On Windows, press Windows+P and select Duplicate to show the same desktop on both screens, or Extend to use the board as extra desktop space. For a compatible wireless display, press Windows+K and select the receiver. Microsoft’s instructions are for supported Windows wireless-display setups; see Microsoft’s screen-mirroring and projection guidance.
- Start the interactive software or mode. Install or open the manufacturer’s driver if the system requires one. Epson’s cited guide requires the Easy Interactive Driver for Mac PC Interactive mode on the specified projectors; the Touch Unit is optional for finger touch on those models. SMART says its drivers enable the full interactive features on the boards covered by its instructions.
- Calibrate and test. If the board offers calibration or orientation, follow its model-specific procedure. Test both the projected picture and touch or pen input before presenting.
Fix common connection problems
No image or “No Input”
- Check that both the laptop and projector or display are powered on and awake.
- Reseat the video cable and inspect it for damage; confirm it is connected to the intended ports.
- Select the projector input that matches the connection in use.
- Tell the laptop to output to an external screen. On Windows, press Windows+P and choose a display mode.
- For wireless projection, confirm the receiver appears and that the laptop supports the receiver’s display method.
SMART’s model-specific troubleshooting guide also lists signal, input, resolution, driver, USB, power, and calibration checks for its SMART Board M600 | M600V.
The image is blurry, distorted, or the wrong size
- Set the computer’s output resolution to the projector’s native resolution; find that resolution in the projector manual.
- Adjust projector position, zoom, and focus.
- If the image is clear but touch points are offset, check that the image fits the interactive surface and run the board’s calibration or orientation procedure.
SMART’s setup guidance for the referenced boards covers matching computer resolution and calibrating the interactive surface; the exact controls vary by model.

The image works, but touch or the pen does not
- Check that the interactive USB cable is connected to the correct board or projector port.
- Confirm the required manufacturer driver is installed and running, or enable the projector’s interactive mode.
- Check board power and status indicators, then complete calibration if needed.
Some details are model-specific. For the Epson BrightLink models in its guide, Mac PC Interactive mode requires the Easy Interactive Driver, and HDMI3 may map to USB-B2 by default. Follow the guide for the exact model rather than assuming another projector uses the same mapping.
