A laptop stand can raise your screen, but it raises the built-in keyboard too. For extended typing, the more useful choice is often a stand that puts the screen at a comfortable height while you type on a separate keyboard and use a separate pointing device. The available evidence does not establish eight current, independently tested 2026 stand winners, so this guide focuses on how to choose a setup without inventing a ranking.
Why a stand alone may not improve typing comfort
A laptop stand changes the position of the screen and built-in keyboard together. Raising the display can help position the screen, but it may also leave the keyboard too high for comfortable prolonged typing. A stand is therefore best considered as one component of the workstation, not a complete ergonomic solution.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says laptop keyboards are generally not suitable for prolonged typing and recommends an external keyboard and input device for laptop and tablet workstations in its purchasing guidance. OSHA’s keyboard guidance advises keeping shoulders relaxed, elbows close to the body, and wrists straight and in line with the forearms. It also says to consider keyboard placement alongside other workstation components, including the mouse and wrist or palm rests.
Choose the stand around your typing arrangement
If you will type on the laptop itself
Prioritize a position where you can use the built-in keyboard without raising your shoulders or bending your wrists awkwardly. If raising the screen makes the keyboard uncomfortable, the stand is not solving the main typing problem; try a lower position or consider a separate keyboard.

If you will use an external keyboard and mouse
Position the laptop screen independently of your typing surface. This lets you raise the display while keeping the keyboard and pointing device where your arms and wrists can stay relaxed and aligned. OSHA recommends considering these components together rather than treating the stand as the sole ergonomic choice.
What to compare when choosing a laptop stand

How to set up the workstation
- Decide how you will type. If you expect to work for long periods, plan for a separate keyboard and pointing device rather than assuming the laptop keyboard will remain comfortable once elevated.
- Set the stand position. Adjust the laptop screen for your desk and working position. If you are typing on the built-in keyboard, check that the raised keyboard does not force your shoulders up or wrists out of line.
- Place the keyboard and mouse. Keep shoulders relaxed, elbows near your body, and wrists straight and aligned with your forearms, following OSHA’s keyboard guidance.
- Check stability and fit in use. Confirm that the laptop sits securely and does not shift during ordinary typing. Product dimensions and compatibility should come from the manufacturer’s current specifications.
Do you need a wrist or palm rest?
OSHA notes that opinions vary on wrist and palm supports. It says proper use has been shown to reduce muscle activity and facilitate neutral wrist angles, while cautioning that resting the wrist or palm on a support while typing may inhibit motion and encourage awkward wrist postures. A support should not be treated as a substitute for arranging the keyboard and mouse so your wrists remain aligned.
