Upgrade the SSD first if your laptop still uses a hard drive and feels slow opening apps or files. Upgrade RAM first if slowdowns happen while many apps, browser tabs, or demanding projects are active. If the laptop already has an SSD and enough memory, diagnose the cause before buying anything: neither upgrade is a guaranteed fix for an unspecified slowdown.
What RAM and an SSD do
RAM is short-term working memory used by the apps and files you have open. Storage keeps files and programs when the laptop is off. An SSD is a storage drive; replacing a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) with an SSD is a different upgrade from replacing or expanding an SSD already in the laptop. Microsoft Support explains that more memory can let a device do more at once without slowdowns, while a storage upgrade addresses the drive and its capacity (Microsoft Support: All about computer memory; Kingston Technology: Should you upgrade your memory or storage for better PC performance?).
Choose the first upgrade by the problem
| What you notice | Upgrade to investigate first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The laptop runs from an HDD and is slow opening apps or files | A compatible SSD | Replacing an HDD with an SSD is a recognized storage upgrade path. Confirm the laptop supports the drive’s interface and form factor. |
| Slowdowns happen with many apps, browser tabs, or large active projects | RAM | More memory may support more simultaneous work. Check memory use and whether the laptop can accept an upgrade. |
| Files and apps no longer fit comfortably | A higher-capacity supported SSD | More storage addresses space; it does not automatically resolve a RAM bottleneck. |
| The laptop already has an SSD and adequate RAM, but still feels slow | Diagnose before buying | The cause could be something neither upgrade fixes. The benefit of an upgrade depends on the original system and the selected component. |
These are starting points, not performance guarantees. The available guidance does not establish a universal percentage improvement or a controlled, laptop-specific RAM-versus-SSD comparison for a known machine and workload. Kingston’s upgrade guidance is manufacturer information, not a benchmark that applies to every laptop (Kingston Technology; Crucial: Memory & SSD Upgrades).
Use RAM guidance as a starting point, not a limit
Microsoft Support gives general Windows memory guidance: at least 4 GB for people primarily browsing the web, working on documents, or streaming online video; 8 GB recommended to keep a device running long term; and 16 GB or more as a possible fit for photo or video editing and other high-performance projects. These are general recommendations from Microsoft’s undated support page, accessed in 2026—not a universal minimum, a laptop-specific maximum, or a promise that adding RAM will solve a slowdown (Microsoft Support: All about computer memory).

Check laptop compatibility before choosing a part
Compatibility depends on the exact laptop model. A part that works in one laptop may not fit or be supported in another. Identify the make and complete model number, then verify the following in its documentation or a system-specific compatibility selector:
- RAM: Whether memory is soldered or upgradeable; supported memory generation and total capacity; available slots; and supported configuration.
- SSD: Whether the current drive is an HDD or SSD, and which interface and physical form factor the laptop accepts. SATA and NVMe are distinct drive interfaces; check the laptop’s actual support rather than assuming either will fit.
- Memory mix: If adding RAM to existing memory, check whether capacities, speeds, or brands can be mixed. Kingston warns that mixing specifications may cause compatibility issues, and system limits can prevent memory from reaching its advertised speed.
- Expected benefit: Match the part to the symptom. Crucial notes that upgrade impact depends on the original system and chosen component, and advises selecting by the computer’s accurate model.
For model-specific checks, see Crucial’s compatibility selector, Kingston’s SSD upgrade guidance, and Kingston’s desktop/notebook memory support.

A practical decision process
- Find the exact laptop model. Use the model number on the laptop or in its system information; do not shop from the brand name alone.
- Check the current drive. If it is an HDD and the symptoms are slow app or file opening, investigate a compatible SSD first.
- Look at memory use during the slowdown. If active work is constrained when many apps, tabs, or large projects are open, investigate RAM—provided it is upgradeable.
- Separate a space problem from a speed problem. If files no longer fit, consider a supported higher-capacity SSD; more storage is not the same as more working memory.
- Confirm the part against model documentation or a compatibility selector. Verify supported capacity, generation, slots, interface, and form factor before purchase.
- If neither symptom nor compatibility points clearly to an upgrade, diagnose further. Buying RAM or an SSD without identifying the bottleneck may leave the actual problem unchanged.
