Laptop prices are under pressure partly because AI data centers are increasing demand for servers and memory, tightening the supply balance for components used in PCs. That can raise manufacturers’ costs, but it does not mean every laptop has already become more expensive by the same amount: brands and retailers may absorb costs, pass them on, change configurations, or use existing inventory.
How AI data-center demand can affect laptop prices
The effect is indirect. AI data centers need large numbers of servers, and server production competes for memory-industry capacity and supplier attention. When suppliers prioritize advanced-process capacity and products for high-performance servers, the remaining supply balance for conventional DRAM and NAND flash can tighten. Laptop makers buy those conventional memory and storage components, so higher negotiated costs can feed into their bills of materials.
This does not mean a laptop’s DRAM is interchangeable with the high-bandwidth memory used by AI accelerators. The connection is supplier capacity and market allocation: strong server demand can influence what manufacturers prioritize and how much capacity is available across the broader memory market.

What the latest forecasts say—and what they do not
TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook forecasts conventional DRAM contract prices rising 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and NAND flash contract prices rising 15–20%. It says suppliers continue prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products, leaving the overall market undersupplied. These are forecasts for component contract prices, not measured increases in laptop retail prices. TrendForce’s 4Q26 memory outlook

TrendForce also reports that notebook inventories increasingly reflect higher component costs in 4Q26. PC manufacturers are still procuring amid expectations of tight DRAM supply in 2027, and the firm warns that PC DRAM supply could decline as more capacity shifts to server applications. Its outlook describes brands using inventory and channel stock to support client SSD shipments, while reducing SSD capacity in mainstream models to control costs. TrendForce’s 4Q26 memory outlook
Other analysts have published different estimates with different scopes. Gartner forecast that combined DRAM and SSD prices would rise 130% by the end of 2026 compared with 2025, and that PC prices would increase 17% over the same comparison. Gartner also projected PC memory’s share of total bill-of-materials cost at 23%, up from 16% in 2025. These are Gartner forecasts, not a verified global index of realized laptop prices; Gartner’s “PC” figure should not be read as a laptop-only measurement. Gartner’s February 2026 forecast

Why some price estimates sound much higher than others
TrendForce’s March 2026 example starts with a mainstream notebook that originally had a US$900 manufacturer suggested retail price. In its model, DRAM and SSD rise from roughly 15% of the notebook’s bill of materials under normal conditions to more than 30% in the 1Q26 scenario. If the maker passes through memory costs while preserving existing margins, the modeled retail price might need to rise by more than 30%. Including CPU price increases could bring the modeled increase close to 40%. This is a conditional cost scenario for one example, not evidence that all laptops rose by that amount. TrendForce’s notebook cost model
That scenario and Gartner’s 17% PC-price forecast cannot be averaged into a single expected laptop increase: they use different assumptions, baselines, and scopes. Neither establishes how much a particular model costs in stores today. Actual retail prices depend on each company’s costs, inventory, margins, positioning, and pricing decisions.

Memory is not the only cost pressure
CPU pricing and availability can add to the pressure. TrendForce’s March analysis says Intel raised prices by more than 15% on certain entry-level and older-generation notebook CPUs—not on every Intel notebook processor. It also describes AI-related demand as contributing to the prioritization of advanced process and packaging capacity for high-performance computing products. TrendForce’s notebook cost analysis
TrendForce’s January outlook also cites rising costs for printed circuit boards, batteries, and power-management integrated circuits alongside CPU and memory pressures. The combined effect varies by laptop design and component mix. TrendForce’s January notebook outlook

How manufacturers may respond
Higher component costs do not automatically appear as an equal increase on a retail price tag. Manufacturers and retailers can respond in several ways:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Pass some costs on: Raise list prices or reduce discounts, depending on the product and market.
- Absorb some costs: Protect a price point or market position at the expense of margins.
- Change configurations: Offer less SSD storage or adjust other specifications to manage the bill of materials.
- Use inventory: Sell components bought earlier or draw on channel stock, which can delay or soften the effect on particular products.
These approaches can coexist. A laptop’s price and specification may therefore change at different times, and two machines with similar names may not have the same memory or storage configuration.
What this means when deciding whether to buy
Do not treat a forecast as proof that waiting will make every laptop more expensive—or that buying immediately guarantees a lower price. Compare the actual machines available to you and focus on the configuration that meets your needs.
- Compare the total price of identical or closely matched configurations, rather than relying on model names alone.
- Check memory capacity and whether it can be upgraded; some laptops have memory that cannot be replaced by the buyer.
- Check SSD capacity, since reducing storage is one cost-control response reported for mainstream models.
- Match processor tier to your workload instead of paying for performance you will not use.
- Include warranty and support, and consider whether a refurbished laptop meets your requirements.
Gartner’s February 2026 release forecast that the sub-US$500 entry-level PC segment would disappear by 2028. That is a prediction, not an established outcome, and it describes the PC segment rather than a guaranteed price for every laptop. Gartner’s February 2026 forecast
